I have had Bullets fly near me and they make a zipping sound before you hear the bang of the initial firing of the gun. I guess this idea could be good for warning shots to get people’s attention.

I've been tempted to drill holes in Woodleigh Hydros because the heavier ones gave me trouble with COL, either because of magazine length or short throats.

My idea was to use the lightest one available, drill a hole in the back almost to the tip, and fill it with lead.

While it might not whistle, being short might help see it stayed end-on in the animal.

Also, a drilled hole in side of bullet nose would destroy concentricity of CG to form.
When you wanted the whistling bullet to go close to an ear, it might take off the entire head,
especially if it was a .458.
Maybe re-think that patent ?

Yes and a bit over 2450 fps MV and no pressure signs
from that 25" Shilen barrel with a groove diameter that is closer to .459" than .458".
But I think 2450 fps is prudent for that rifle,
since I was getting diminishing returns for each grain of powder past 2450 fps MV.
And best accuracy and uniformity was at 2448 fps MV with 82.0 grains of AA-2230, 3.680" COL.
3 shots had st.dev. of 2 fps and 0.33 MOA group.

In the McGowen 23" barrel that is .458" in groove diameter,
I suspect that velocity loss won't be much.
Between those same two barrels the 400-gr HV with same load (also with AA-2230) lost only 16 fps, or 8 fps per inch of barrel shortening.
2527 fps MV decreased to 2511 fps MV for the 2" difference in barrel lengths.
Heavier-bullet loads tend to lose less velocity per inch of barrel shortening,
so I expect similarly meager velocity loss with the 450-grainer and same powder, AA-2230.
I predict my 2448 fps load in Bobbarrella (25"/.459")
will be about 2432 fps or faster in Marcella (23"/.458"),
though I might want to start Marcella off with less than 82.0 grains of AA-2230 and "work up."

That IS an interesting idea if you can be precise in the machining,
regarding center of form for the axis of the drilling,
and uniform depth of hole for the weight of the filling.

Pouring molten lead into the back end would be easy, and a mere card wad over the powder might protect the lead from the fire while going down the barrel,
or punch out your own over-powder wads from an aluminum soda can, or put an upside-down gas check over the powder ?

I am hoping I can just sort of ream out the existing hollowpoint to produce a HYDRA with my drill press.
I might need a mini-lathe from Harbor Freight,
or a real machinist.

A .458 Lott parody, using Paint software on 'puter, followed after seeing this Nosler manual page (below).
Pretty slow for a .458 Lott, about 2200 fps tops for a 500-grainer, and almost all loads are compressed !
Even the SAAMI .458 Win.Mag. can do 2200 fps with 500-grainers at less than 60,000 PSI instead of 62,500 PSI in the Lott.
SAAMI .458 Win.Mag. plus proper powder selection
is all it takes.

Sight height for the trajectory on the box above is 1.5".

Remember, the handloader of the .458 WIN-V can improve on the trajectory shown above, by making the bullet go faster than possible with a .458 Lott,
and/or using a bullet with a better BC.

Your tempting me on an Idea I have had for a while now; the AR 15's have driven lots of Weaver attached Flip ups but they are all too high. Cut and drill, tap and screw in an aperture. Might have to do it!

Nope.
It has no point and looks like a short North Fork Flat Point Solid. It is brass, not copper.
Since it has a lead filled base,is dense for its length and penetrates very well.
They were among the bullets we loaded for our African bullet testing outing. They penetrate as well as the NF FPS and better than any of the other bullets. Even from a 45-70, they will easily shoot through two cape buff. They are specialized, but when you need to shoot through game, watch out for what is behind the target animal.

A question for you- are sambar deer good to eat? I have recently learned that Texas has some free ranging Sambar and some Sambar on exotic ranches. They are a large deer AND IF GOOD TO EAT,,,,,
