Good to hear Rodney...

The PH will let you seat out further and be plenty strong but you dont have to wait...
the 416 CZ with its crossbolts is a great and cost effective way to go.

Should probably wait and do the .550 on the big PH, but I don't think I can wait that long. Besides as a working man the budget needs to be observed so one at a time. So should the doner rifle be a ZKK602 in .458Win/ Lott or CZ 416 Rigby. Will the 416 CZ's mag well accomadate the Gibbs case or will mods be needed. Problim is I've only one CZ in .416 and many in .458 would like to keep the .416 as is so another purchase may be needed. So many problims... R.

Oops was lost in la la rifleland some where, should have placed my previous post under the .550Gibbs thread. But what the heck the cartridges are very much alike and require likewise actions. Both the 577BME and .550GIBBS require strong actions and from there become a contest between man and rifle. R.

buck up young jedi...

The 550 Gibbs is a very moderate recoiling cartridge, and I expect for those who only wish to replicate the great 577NE 3" ballistics this thing will be in the category of "fun gun".
Today my gunsmith starts on the 577 BME; contouring the barrel, and letting all the parts get acquainted...

The 577BME chamber reamer is set so that
you can load 3.6" overall length as some will set up their guns, but also you can set
bullets out further for a length of 3.85"
on 750 gr, which is what I'd do to magazine
to handle them, say in an Enfield. That extra length allows 160 gr ball powder. And with
all powders that I loaded to fill cases,
when set at 3.6" that I did all the testing
for, when loading out to 3.85", allows
another 150 fps at least still at medium
pressures. ED

The shorter length loading at 3.6"
is moderate at 2350-2400, and loaded longer
3.85" 2500 plus still moderate, that is
the W 748 load. All loads I put out
were moderate so cases will go
20 rounds.... Now to get it on as they say
and get 65K pressures use full loads of
H335 with 750 gr..Ed

Ed, and the group,

I loaded some with the 135 gr charge of H335 and WW748 with the 600gr JSP and will shoot them over the chrono tomorrow if the daylight holds out. If not, Sunday after church.

Ed, what would be the maximum loads with H335 or WW748 you would go to? 155 to 165gr of either?
I guess we will know by next Thursday afternoon. The plan each trip is to increase 5 grains, and see what the rifle tells me. My oal is 3.72".

Probably with the 748. Little less
with 335....Please tell me how much
the 550 Gibbs holds of 748 when full,
then it is easier to predict and work up
loads. Ed

Any progress on the build, I want to see what the results are. I have it narrowed down between the 505 Empire, 450 Rigby, or this new monster 577.
Tax returns are in the near future and I need a new big bore toy!

Thanks,
Johnson

my gunsmith's wife's cancer issues are dealt with, and he got home today. He called me and suggested as soon as I could get over there in the morning we would chamber and headspace the barrel. I will take it out and test fire it asap. Stock is not ready, so I will wrap a shop towel around the barrel in front of the receiver and do the "Handcannon" thing.

Glad your smith and wife are gaining a bit.
Remember it's not a weak kneed Nyati.
Maybe lock it in heavy vise or least put
it in some kinda stock. Ed

common sense prevailed. We have a sporterized military stock to test fit the barreled action in. It will be a single shot, but safer to fire that way. I have Tom McCoy's recoil management system to soften the blow.

Hey Rich
I don't remember where i cashed in... you called me just after a goodly dose of cold meds and past my bed time...

military stocks generally work if you cut them off infront of the action, so any sized barrel can fit
