Fact: The Elk herd in NC is in Northwestern NC, not Northeastern. As of 2009 the whole herd topped a whopping 110 animals. 52 were introduced in 2001, so that means they have roughly doubled in 8 years. It is illegal to get within 50 yds or even disturb them from any distance let alone shoot them. If Hotcore has seen many Elk in NC it had to be from making hundreds of drives through the park and counting the same ones multiple times!. http://www.ncelk.org/herd.htm Northeastern NC is coastal plain topography with swamps and tidal estuaries. "Having used a 7mmRemMag probably longer than you have been alive, and having looked at many Elk up close, that is how I based my post. I do not believe in using an Inadequate Cartridge on any Game. It speaks poorly for the person's understanding of their anatomy and tenacity for life." So basically he is saying he has never shot a .270 and has never actually killed an Elk, just "looked at them". Yet he feels his 7mm Mag which is a massive .007 larger in diameter, and a blistering 150 fps faster with similar weight bullets, is an Elk slayer and the .270 is totally inadequate. Hmmmmmm. The late Frank Barnes said of the .270 Win in the 6th Edition of Cartridges of the World, 1989: "Some disagree, but current evidence forces the conclusion that the .270 is adequate for any North American big game and many African plains animals as well. Assuming the hunter uses the proper bullet weight and type for the job at hand, the .270 will deliver reliable performance." I agree that knowing the animals anatomy is important. But as many have noted, if you put the bullet in the "wheel house" said beast will die. That is true of any round fired.

I don't care about pictures, one way or the other and have very few of my own after decades in BC-Alberta and into the "Territories". I tend to take other men at their word as real bushmen are scrupulously honest, IME, and do not concern myself with issues of who shot what, when. There are a FEW posers on every forum that I have spent time on and these can usually be recognized by huge numbers of posts per annum and a never-failing tendency to viciously attack and denigrate other posters, whom they do not know and have never met. From what I have seen here, HC is one of the worst in this respect and he has attacked people here for no other reason than to gratify his own nasty temper. He ponificates on matters such as rifle make and cartridge-bullet choice for game and under conditions which he has zero experience of and then, if another dares to disagree, he attacks and spews nasty personal slurs.....like a 13 yr. old girl. Best to just ignore him and not waste time with his opinion on "Elk" cartridges or the fine .270Win., a most useful Elk round as I have witnessed in probably a dozen kills with it. My .338WMs DO make a bigger hole, but, my .270-150NPs kill perfectly well and quite a number of the most successful BC Elk hunters I have known preferred and used this round, due to the light rifles and moderate recoil. So, let HC live with his foul temper and fantasies and move on, that is what I think.

You know since I was the subject of Ol Hotcore's wrath, I am glad to see this continuing. Teancum, I am sure has it right. When I answered Hot's qualification of an elk I had shot, he had nothing to say at all, however, quite besides the point. When someone, anyone, starts knocking an excellent successful cartridge, regardless of caliber, they most likely lack the experience necessary to do so. Get um Teancum, you're right on! Unfortuneately TEANCUM was a little short sighted as he forgot to list several very important questions for HC; 5. Does CHE increase with the size of the elk? 6. Does the number of antler points increase CHE? 7. If an antlerless elk does that decrease CHE? 8. How many "one shot" shot elk does it take before you get a meaningful CHE sample? Etc. ad nauseum....... Larry Gibson

Larry Point well taken. How careless of me to overlook those additional points. Thanks for bringing those points to my attention. I am spending anxious moments waiting for Hotsh#t's responses to, now, the list of 8 points that would quantify his experiences with the elk, other than "LOOKIN" Quite a while ago when I first found this forum I was posting away on some subject here when Hotsh#t jump my butt about a post with a vile remark or two. Not being one to run from a scrap it's been fun to turn the hose on the old Hotsh#t and see how well he responds. Most of the time he will slink off and not post for a while hoping the flare up will pass. Perhaps we can do our best to keep this thread fresh to offer him the chance to put up.

I'd be happy to take a photo, and put it here for you to see. The weight, by the way, was estimated by the boys at the meat locker, based on their vast experience. In Springerville Arizona, they see a lot of Huge elk, every year. Spot on. It's aggravating to have some interest in a topic and follow a thread only to have it spoiled by posters who have nothing to add except pointed words for another poster. I find it strange that members who have some dislike for each other obviously enable the "notify me when so-and-so posts" tab simply to jump in and beat up on each other. Talk about having too much idle time... Weird. I've often thought about how an AR member party would be. If everyone got to meet each other face to face. Probably be one for the books....

Jerry It's better in a thread of it's own instead of messing up multiple other threads. You just have to see the Bullet testing threads which became very confused / agressive etc to se how it can mangle them from the original topic. And anyway, too many trolls, arm chair experts and internet regurgitators of internet myths etc on forums (just see some of the crap regurgitated in the DR forum) that I have no problem with posters being asked to justify claims, info in posts etc etc and generally back up what they say anonimously.

The nice thing about being delusional is you get to make up your own facts and reality. Mike Legistine actu quod scripsi? Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue. What I have learned on AR, since 2001: 1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken. 2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps. 3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges. 4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down. 5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine. 6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle. 7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions. 8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA. 9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not. 10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact. 11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores. 12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence. 13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.
