I know a number of guys who have scopes on their doubles with quick detachable mounts and hunt domestic and plains game with them. No need to let those 100 yard+ shots pass by (PG) nor dust gather on the duo-tubes.

Ask Rich about his 2 double gun PG safari.

A picatinny rail system like Ruger does here would be good to attach to the quarter rib to use almost any sight system.

http://www.gunblast.com/Ruger_FrontierRifle.htm

If a double is a means and not an end then a rail rib is a good idea IMHO
The rail can be removed with screws ect. Add a red dot to the rail and voila!

The rail is removable so wont mess up any aesthetic.

I have a scoped Tikka 512SD in 9.3x74R and I would not hesitate to use it on PG. In fact, that is pretty much what it's for, except if I had solids for it......!

Cortes,

the great thing about this forum; okay ONE of the great things about this forum is that we all get to share our opinions. I would disagree with your opinion for two reasons.

1. I got back Friday evening from a two weeks Plains Game Safari. I took two double barreled rifles, an early Searcy in .470 NE and a Chapuis in 9,3x74R with a 2-7X 33mm Leupold scope on it zeroed at 100 yards. I got a Caracal, a Kudu (one shot; bang flop dead, a Waterbuck, and a Gemsbuck. The reports and pictures are here for you to see. The scope made it much easier to evaluate trophy animals.

2. Us old farts, especially if you are over sixty like I am really need the scope. I would not stick one on my .470, but it is a close range rifle. You will find it lets the rifle show its full accuracy potential, and on any game smaller than Cape Buffalo that is a tremendous asset.

Welcome to AR. Your approach will definitely make your life here more, ummmmmmm, interesting. Be strong, and stand your ground.

regards,

Rich

Sort of agree with ISS for a change. To beat around dense thickets for bushbuck with a big double go together very nicely.

It certainly is a matter of taste, but I think that a scoped double looks odd. Having said that, I think that a scope spoils the looks of a big bore bolt rifle as well, but less so than it does so to a double.

Of course, (as with bolt rifles) if a scope makes a double rifle more versatile and enables more effective use, then why the hell not.

I have such poor eyesight that if I had to ever own a double rifle, I would probably have to put a scope on it to be able to use it for hunting. (Fortunately I am a bolt action guy.)

Last year I took a Merkel 141(e) in 9.3x74 to Deka for leopard and plains game. I also had a .458 Win Mag for a tuskess and bufflao.

I shot all my bait animals (1 zebra, 7 or 8 impala, 1 kudu) with the Merkel which had a 1.5-5x Leupold upon it. The rifle shoots better than 4" group at 200 yards. Not that I'm a great shot, but I didn't miss an animal with it (including a double tap on a running hyena).

IMHO, the little straight tube scope doesn't look funny or interfere with the Merkel's balance.

9.3 x74 doubles with scopes are great for PG at 150, and leopard in a tree. Take off the scope for follow-up or expected close range work.

I agree that a scope on a double looks bad.

I think practically any rifle looks better without an optical sight, for that matter.

But I think trophies in the salt are more important than the cosmetic looks of the rifle. The buffalo and other trophies on the wall and the memories of the hunt make up for the lack of tradition in using optical sights on old design rifles.

I like using a double rifle in Africa because of the tradition and the advantages of doubles. I like using a double because Selous, Rooseveldt, Taylor, Ruark, etc. used them. However, it is an imperfect world we live in and if my old guy vision requires a scope or red dot then so be it.

Better to have an ugly red dot or scope on the double or big bore magazine rifle and give up a little on the aesthetics than not use the rifles at all.

I think the guys who actually use doubles in Africa understand the practicality of optical sights whether they choose to use them or not.

Peter, did you just question the authenticity of a double rifle because it was a Holland & Holland instead of a Searcy? Just checking. Confused

I have a krieghoff 375 H&H double with a s&b 1.5 x 6 scope on it. I took a tsessebe, kudu, zebra, and hyena with it. They might agree that a scope doesn't go with a double, but I think it does.

I have to admit a big bore double with a scope does rather seem a sin. I don't think I'd ever have claw mounts "added" to a large bore classic English double. That said I just bought my first double and it came with claw mounts. I don't think I'd hunt a lion or leopard over bait with a double unless it had a scope. So perhaps I'll use it to take a lion or leopard. It makes a lot of sense for the smaller bore doubles if you are double crazed and need a plains game rifle. It also makes a lot of sense for the double crazed with failing eyes.

Good thread...

Here's my disclaimer on scoped DRs:

1) If you need to shoot a scoped DR because of eye issues - more power to you.

2) Let's face it - you just can't get that close on some species of critters all of the time - If you love DRs and you're going P-game hunting - scope it!

3) This happened to me once: Had a pair of Buffalo, old Dugga boys. Was the 8th day of my 10 day hunt. One was real nice. The wind did nothing but swirl all dang'd day. After about 5 hours of stalking, bumping, stalking bumping (you get the jest here). I took a 150 yards shot and nailed the better of the two using iron sights. Shot him high on the lungs and got a nice charge as a result when moving in to pick-up blood spoor - nearly got my PH stomped in the process...My point: Would'a been nice to have a scope sighted DR on that day!

To each his own, but from now on, I'll not whine too much if a rifle comes along that I like and it has scope mounts on it!

Instead of worrying about a scope on a DR, why not take an open sighted DR and a scoped bolt gun? The trackers or spotters can carry the rifle you are not intending to use but might use.
