Case capacity is higher in the 45-70 than you might think, thin walls. Definitely safe to say that you could get 2000 FPS from a 400g with less compression than typical 458wm loads or 458 Lott 2300fps loads.

Typical, elephant capable 458wm loads are
NOT compressed!

I'm not sure what is meant when someone says the animal "bled out".

Died because of loss of blood. This would be different than, say, a brain or spine shot. Also different than a heart/lung bang flop.

Often used to indicate a slower rather than faster death.

Hope this helps,

All Bourbon is "starter" for the BBQ! Cheaper than lighter fluid and has the same heat potential. I'd like a little Midleton Very Rare about now but who knows what's lurking in the bar. Jeffe prefers RatzePutz but he's totally out and the stuff is impossible to get!

This has been a very entertaining thread. I just purchased a 1895 Marlin. Also, in College physics, I did learn about velocity and as stated previously, the same bullet, being a solid, will penetrate deeper at a higher velocity. There's nothing anyone can say that will change that, unless the laws of physics are proven to be wrong.

On a side note, a question to ponder......

What will happen if an object that can not be stopped, hits an object that can not be moved? Eeker

That would essentially be a matter - antimatter reaction... Mutual destruction.....

Old Ray must be gutshooting his critters to be able to drink a couple cold ones before they die.
I took a 45/70 to Africa, not for DG but everything else. 350 grn horn flatnose interloks at 2150 fps ( re 7) For me the key to good velocities was one of those Lee factory crimp dies. It made for more consistant and higher vel. I shot everything from warthog to eland with it and nothing went very far, if at all. I've also used a .405 win, a .308,8x68,.375 H&H and a few others on the same range of animals. The 8x68 would blow blood and gore out the offside that would make a B grade horror movie proud. But you know what? There wasnt a bit of differance in how far the animals ran after the shot from the slow 45/70 to the fast 8x68 or the power of the .375 All of which means to me, it's more the shot I take and where I put the bullet then what I use.
I cant comment on the Bourbon, not much of a drinker, a beer now and then is all I have.

Macifej, is it surprising to you that nobody here trusts a person, who is so contrary with everyone as you are, enough to shoot your handloads in their rifle? Hell those rounds may be loaded with a full case of bull’s eye! I have three 45-70s, a S/S double rifle, a Ruger No1,and a 1895 Marlin lever, but I wouldn’t shoot one of your handloads in a shore battery, without breaking them down to see what is inside!

BOOM............... diggin

You do love taunting me don't you MAC! Don't be such a girl! I fired the first 41 of 50 in my Encore. What's inside is 65 grains of H4895, a 210 primer, a 250 XFN and a Slight crimp. I don't need you to test or analyze the loads Bubba - just shoot Bambi or Porky and relay the results so we can all see them. (As you might have guessed I'm not living in the backwoods and don't have time to go do animal testing)You're welcome to take one apart "Inspector". FYI I didn't do the load development - it was done by the gun builder. Any other stoooooopid comments to offer or do you want to actually shoot something!?!? hillbilly

PS! I'll let you know when I get a shore battery for you to come test! Cool

I can't believe that some are not familair with the term "bled out"...It means the animal ran out of gas, lost all his blood..That term has been around all my life, maybe it's geographical. Smiler

As to the 45-70, the most argueable cartridge in the world and one I have little use for based on my personal experience with it.

My word is who really gives a fat rats a$$ what the 45-70 does, try it and make up your own mind...We are freemen and can make those choices on our own without arguement..

That is todays holier than thou statement, Smiler and each of you will be obliged to send me $1.00 via the USPS, for this important piece of legislature, henceforth known as Rays law.

Ray-Bob! Your "term" is used in reference to bipedal types in other parts of the country.

The other day I was hunting fat ass rats and shot one with my 45-70. He kept going and going like the Energizer Bunny until he finally ran out of gas and bled out....you know it's because I didn't use enough gun....all that kind of stuff.

Do you have change for a $20.00?
