Going to be one huge gun. I will have to start working out to lift it and shoot it at that weight. My 4 bore doule is 24 1/2 lbs and has been my limit so far. Going to be one very COOL looking monster when finished. I knew when we started that is was not going to be a lightwieght rabbit gun!. Definitely one of a kind though. thanks for the video Colin. Most large bore double rifle makers saay appx. 1000 hours to make a really big bore double. Looks like you are going to be right in at that number yourself Colin.

That is pure awesome.
A good reason to make aluminum slugs.
Add a folding bayonete to stab then pull the trigger in case of an attack by leopard. The bayonete will help reduce muzzle rise and cut the animal open bad.
I want a pair of those when I'm surrounded by pissed of pachederms. Good to see Rich maintaining his Whomper club status tu2

I didn't know Rich was a lefty.
He shot the pistol with left hand.
In the famous levitating rifle photo wasn't he shooting right handed?
Ambidextrous?
Right-eyed and left-handed?
Next time I am sure he will get his arm locked up better, now he knows what to expect.
Colin was shooting right handed and he was locked.

Must say Rich did a great job of diverting the path of the recoiling pistol off to his right side instead of straight back into his head.
Not exactly the best form, but glad for no skull fracture.

People shooting lesser pistols have visited neurosurgeons as a consequence of having the hammer spur buried in their foreheads.

Aye, and Colin was shooting it with right (strong) hand,
though Rich was using his left (weak?) hand.
Rich is not left handed?
He got caught a bit off gaurd on that one,
since Colin made it look so easy.

Actually I happen to be truly Ambidextrous, I can do anything with my left hand that I can with my right, but I am right eye dominant so I prefer to shoot right handed. When it comes time to regulate the 2 Bore, you'll get to see me shooting left handed with a patch over my right eye.

Jeffeosso,

I could swap out any number of them with lead until I got the balance perfect but this thing already weighs 42.5 pounds and with the ribs it will probably be close to 43.5 - 44 pounds. No man I know including myself is going to be able to shoot this thing on the swing. This rifle is pretty much going to have to be handled off of a standing rest at the range or sticks in the field.

While we are the subject of balance and weight...if I ever build another one of these I'm going to do everything in my power to convince the client that the barrels should be no longer than 24 inches and the profile should be as thin as I can safely turn them down to. Judging from this one, if the barrels were 24 inches long and the profile as thin as safely possible, I'm guessing it would weigh about 34-35 pounds and with 3 mercury reducers in the buttstock would balance properly. 24 inch barrels would make it look short and stubby(like most of the 4 Bore doubles I've seen) but it would be more usable. 35 pounds is still a lot of rifle but for 2 shots in the field I think a guy could manage it, especially if he had a gun bearer carry it all day and he was fresh when the time came.

That's my take on it anyways, but it's the man with the money that counts. His is the only opinion that matter(safety first of course).

Colin,
I had thought, once we are past 25#, weight isn't actually the issue Smiler

I agree with you on the barrel length, but with different reason - I like doubles to be SHORTER than bolt guns..

nice film this week. I agree the gun is heavy. I did not realize the gun was going to weigh 45 lbs. I was thinking 35-37 lbs. By the time we realized it was going to be this heavy, it would have cost quite a bit to go back and redesign it with the shorter barrels, and thinner tubes. Live and learn I guess. Besides funds are tightening up for me so we went ahead with the original design.

I am a lefty, I just learned to shoot rifles and shotguns from all right handed family.

Recoil is, shall we say, significant...? The balls only penetrated about 2" into a live cottonwood tree from 15 yds.

Colin put me up at his house. He is restoring his g-g-g-grandfather's house that was built in 1896(?). He and I share an interest not only in big bore firearms, but in good Cuban Cigars.

For those of you who may not know, Colin is just 36 years old.

Rich

Doggy, you are going to like this pistol.

Rich,

Glad you made it home safe and sound.
Rich is a great guest, if you ever have the opportunity to sit around and shoot the breeze, he's fun company.

The Cuban cigar was a really nice gift, I don't get to many Churchills.

Rich thinks I'm living the dream because I have 160 acres of my own personal whitetail hunting grounds with a classic Victorian house that's been handed down through my family for 6 generations(farm was homesteaded in 1868 and the house was built in 1896). The house is an ongoing project, and I think the next major renovation is going to be to get a second bathroom put it.
And now that he let My secrets out...Yes, I'm a decade or more younger than most of the other gun makers who do the kind of work I do. Eeker Big Grin I've been full time gainfully unemployed, err I mean self employed for 7 years now and was a part time gunsmith for 5 years before that in Wyoming. My Wife, who is my high school sweet heart, first and only marriage, loves to hunt and fish as much as I do and is in nursing and makes a pretty good living. And I have two pretty good kids, the oldest lives in a house behind my shop and graduated college last year a week before his 18th birthday and my youngest is a senior in High School this fall but he is taking 9 credit hours of college class and only 2 high school classes. We also have a foster son who graduated this year and ships out for Camp Pendleton in a few weeks. He left out the ride to town to get lunch in my right hand drive 1951 International pick-up(cut, chopped, lowered and a small block Chevy stuffed in it).

He's also been good for at least a weeks worth of gossip in our small town because everybody wants to know who was out at my place in a Jaguar Convertible.

As my wife is found of saying "patience is a virtue, embrace it if you can, often in a woman and seldom in a man". It's always a temptation to rush when things start looking like they are getting done. But slow and steady is what counts at this point.

S&H was making 3500gr turned solids for the 2 Bore but at 20 bucks a shot I don't think I would waste to many of them.

I see how it is, I give a guy nearly 7 hours of video on nearly 1000 hours of production time on something that has never been done before on a subject that is rarely covered in this much detail...and now I'm supposed to take requests?
Ohh the humanity of it all... rotflmo Boom stick, I'll try to remember to get a few shots from different angles before I tear it all down next week.

Bigdoggy,
I always welcome calls from clients, you happen to be one of the few I've actually had an opportunity to meet in person. Most of my business is conducted via emails or the phone, very few actually come by my shop and I rarely get to go to them.

Boom stick,
For $100,000.00 I would video the whole process 100% from any angle you want and then write the book and provide a full set of machinist drawings to go with your rifle.

Or for $100K you could just come live with me for a year...

That offer is open to anyone at that price...Any takers?

Colin
