Hi Ed.
Interesting indeed..

How much capacity does the 585BHE case have in grains of water??

205 gr of water. Now the Trex case I
compared it to was a good one with
thick sides, IE not an Asq. Ed

OK Ed.
My Trex brass from Horneber holds 216 grs of water when new and once fired they hold 220 grs of water. For A-Square brass in this caliber I dont know / cant remember because I threw all out some years ago. A2-brass was thick walled (= lesser volume) and very soft. I just ordered a life supply of Horneber brass and never looked back.

The case I checked wasn't fired, so it will hold a little more after firing.
The Trex case here is thicker on the sides
than BMG brass. It is a thick case made by
Bertram. I sectioned it after checking
capacity, for comparison, so I could see how
it is constructed. Ed

Ed, based on your experiences with these cases and the 700 on the 50 BMg case, do you see any advantage to reaming the primer pockets for 50 BMG primers?

I'm pondering how to get the most from a big batch of 5010 I have available without going the down the duplex road.

Ed, your wildcats scare me! Just thinking of putting my ugly mug against the stock of one at the bench makes me chringe. My order is in for one with a Rigby bolt face and I plan to make a .404 Jeff on it. Something about that long, sexy neck just screams "cast bullet". I will also make up a pattern stock for it this winter and if anyone is interested just let me know.
Now the curious question: what about scope mounts? I'm guessing most guys will just go with Tally. I have been thinking about a G&H top mount or possibly making up a set of claw mounts. I have in stock a few G&H and some Echo side mounts that could be made to work as well. EAW's would fit the bill as would plain vanila Leupold QR's. The problem with all the top mounts is they would place the scope fairly high, possibly enough to fudge a strong cheek weld if stocked for irons. Any one have any ideas?
I agree with the seeming consencus that Pac-Nor makes excellent barrels, they made a dozen for me so far and they all have been shooters. if you sweet talk Penny into having her people contouring one of their 1.35" blanks with a .050 offset it should come out about the proper diameter for a front ring radius.
It took me nine months to get a .416 rebore out of Dan Pederson but it turned out fantastic. Personaly, I will just order an unfinished blank from him.
Discussing my order last week I was a bit disapointed that they were not coming out with a drop box. Looks like one could be made up and it would be easier to do but Montana does not sell parts for their actions so welding two magazine halves together can't work. Anyone have any thoughts on this?
Someone mentioned left hands? I was told that if there was not enough demand they were planning to go strait to the manufacture of the mini actions. if anyone wants a southpaw best let Montana know.

I think the 5010 will only work well with the 416/505. It needs the small bore with heavy-for-caliber bullets to generate enough pressure to cook off efficiently, like it works well in the 264 Win Mag with 140-160 gr bullets.

I'll use something much faster in the 550. Thanks again.

about 585BHE, using reamers and free cases to get started,
has prompted me to get 4 reamers set up. One
will be for Pacnor and other shops rebarreling
for guys. Be nice to have a hundred 585BHEs around

Hi Ed,
Looks great! My MRC PH SS action is on order and should be on hand in September. Once I have it I will get the rest of the project under way. How much for 200 cases? Email me if you prefer to that route.
Thanks,

I got the following email from Jeff at MRC this am. Looks like they'rea making good progress.

Good morning John! We are very close. Most of our parts are in house now
and right now the machine shop that is doing the finish machining on the
bolts and receivers are finalizing the tooling to get them done. They gave
us an estimate of 2 weeks. Then it is about 1-2 weeks at heat treat ( it
only takes a day but with shipping it usually is about 1-2 weeks before we
get them. And from that point it is just a matter of polishing and
assembly.
Jeff

Ed, I'm going to need some cases for the 700 DA AKA the 700 HE 3.25" Will you be selling these.

BE, someone has probably pointed this out by now, maybe even MRC, but a Rigby bolt face is too big for a 404 Jeffery. If you haven't sussed this already it would pay to check it out. If you have, just ignore me. Wink

Hey Ed,

Seems like the ball is really rolling now on your 585BHE. Have you run into any feeding problems with any of the actions you have tried with the round? Like everyone else, waiting on my PH action to decide on what to ahve built.

Thanks,
Paul

I going to make one of my 585s with a magazine,
the Ultra Mag BBK. Set up single stack.
The action, and magazine well in drop box
bottom metal is longer than a loaded case by
.065, so there is the room. The feed rails
are just right for feeding this case single
stack. Will have some more pics of process soon.
I can do the same with Enfield with a bit
of machine work to make extra length.Ed
