I have never owned an '06 but I own a set of dies and have reloaded thousands of rounds for several different people. They seem to love them, even though most of those people own only one hunting rifle. I have just picked up a Browning A-bolt camo stalker in .270 for a song (it came with a leupold 2.5-8x32). This is my 3rd .270 so I am contimplating having it rebarreled to the '06. What the heck, if you can't beat them.......

There is nothing wrong with the 30-06, it has definitely proven itself as a military and hunting round, however, I find it boring. Using the 30-06 is like going into Baskin Robins and ordering plain ole'vanilla. Though there are many who love the 30-06, I find I difficult to choose the vanilla of rifle cartridges, when I can have mocha almond fudge or mint chip - .358 Win, 280 Rem,etc. Moreover, I am not usually fond of the "flavor-of-the-month either (WSMs or Ultra Mags). The only reason I don't have a 30 06 is because I started with the 308 and have never seen a reason to swithch from a 308 to a 30 06. Long range short range the 308 will do it all. My Dad has three 30 06 rifles, two of them I bought for him. He has never reloaded and never will. He has a great choice of bullets from the factory and looks at a rifle as a tool not a hobby. For me shooting is a hobby and I like all sorts of toys. The 30 06 works for my Dad, The 308,358,30-30 30 Herrett and the 300Weathrby, Oh yeas and the 223 work for me. Now I am looking at a 7mm mag that I think will work even better for me. The only thing about that is then I will have to get ridd of one of my 308s.

Why not add to this line of crap? I'lto the original instent of this post:

I said no to the 06 and bought a 300 WinMag.
WHY? Because I liked the idea of something one step bigger. It can do everything the 06 does and I'll feel a bit more confident on the Alaskan Coast, should I ever get the chance to hunt there.

The 30-06 is not boring. It's just been around for a long time. If the 06 is boring then so is the 45-70. The 45-70 has been around even longer but has made a huge come-back. Why not pick up a 450Marlin instead? Probably because there's value to the 45-70. No cartridge/caliber is boring. It is what it is, and if does the job for which it's intended it's good enough for me.

45,

This thread had slipped my attention.

Your half-assed,archaeic rebuttal,is lacking in all avenues. CERTAINLY I need more,as you offered zero substance.

I simply have slammed too many critters with "lacking" cartridges to think the '06(which I've toted and have failed to have become enamoured upon)is an absolute, regarding terminal affects.

Some folks impress easily,I've enough examples(alternately chambered rifles) in the closets,to have the luxury of not being so easily duped..................

Im not quiete sure, hy there are so many of you "hate" the .30-06,...because for me its one of my best all arround calibers for my european hunting.
she never let me down, even under bad circumstances. And where is the big plus of a .300Win Mag?
A lot of people like to have a more powerfull and faster caliber,...but his only makes sense if u shoot over the distance of 200meters. Under this distance i can see no need to use a 300 win mag, specially when u hunt on wild boars.
The faster 300 win mag has a much worser performance then the 06 if u shoot under 150meters

In General:
IMHO its not the question if one caliber is better or more suitable then...an other caliber.
Its the question of the character of the shooter .
Take your time and do your homework, when go out hunting. And then you will kill everything with a .30-06 thats running arround on the world.

cheers
konstantin
