I share your distaste for the .270, probably because O’Connor was paid by Winchester to harp on it shamelessly and relentlessly for so many years. For a similar reason, I can’t stand the mention of the “good ol’ 30-06,†a mediocre military round that’s responsible for wounding more animals than any other in history. The 7mm mag is another sloppy killer, as are all the hyperventilating Weatherbys.

Americans seem to have a real hang-up with and neurotic fear of anything over 30-caliber (unless it’s a 45-70), forcing themselves to creep up to the superfluous .338 when the superior .375 H&H was right there. Am also annoyed by all the new redundant cartridges invented by jack-offs in Remington and Winchester marketing departments for the sole purpose of selling more of their POS rifles to gullible Wal-Mart shoppers.

I can’t think of any possible shooting need that’s not perfectly covered by a classic and thoroughly proven German or English cartridge. For no reason known to man the only American cartridges I have any kind of emotional attachment to are the .280, .35 Whelen and .22 Hornet.

In relation to the .30-06, the way I see it, the most popular cartridges wound the most game, simply because more people are using them to hunt. There is no denying that the .30-06 has been the most popular cartridge in the US. Now, we can't blame any cartridge, regardless of kind, for "wounding" game, unless such a cartridge has a mind of its own and just shoots the bullet in a different direction than what the person behind the trigger intended.

What has made the .338WM popular is the result of .338-caliber bullets on large game around the world, but specifically Alaska game. The .338WM was introduced as "The Alaskan" for obvious reasons, and nowadays it seems that most Alaskans have one of them along a .30-06. Please note that the superfluous .338WM case can launch a .375-caliber bullet with aplomb. This can be seeing in the "WSM-withaBeltAndSlimCase" called the .375 Taylor.

being that this is the medium caliber board, defaming the 45-70 is not called for, i think most who hate the 45-70 actualy dislike some of the users and proponents of this cart. the 45-70 is a short to midrange tool and a great cowboy shooting round, if you dont like it thats o.k. just say you hate rednecks who think thay can kill godzilla with it if thats what you realy mean, no ofense to rednecks, rednecks are what partly make america great as long as they are not racist. a medium cal i just dont like is the 308, i guess it is because it is not as versitile 30-06

Never had much use for the .270 because the .280 can do everything the .270 does, only better. O'Connor would have been better off with a 6.5x55.

The .243 has always been touted as a beginners cartridge when, like the .410 shotgun, it's more for experts because it's underpowered for medium game and must be shot with precision, something beginners seldom do.

Although I love the .30-06, I'll admit that while it does most things adequately, it is outstanding at nothing.

I get nauseous at the mention of any .17 rimfire.

Boomstick,

True this is the medium bore forum, but the thread topic can't be restricted inside those confines neatly.

And no its not the people associated with the 45-70, I am actually glad that the action shooters are part of the wide wide world of shooting sports.

Its the round, not very accurate, heavy recoil, with the terminal ballistics of a rainbow. What's to like? Nostalgia counts for zip in my book. There were a whole slew of similar rounds that all were similar, case in point the 577/450 Martini your not going to hear me singing any praises for it either. They are all obsolete, smokeless powder terminated this entire class of cartridges and placed them in the same category as the dodo bird. Welcome to the 20th century, and we are a 100 years past that.

Nope I liken the all the fan fare on the 45-70 to me digging up a corpse and parading it around as a beauty queen. Cut through all the BS its still a moldy old corpse.

Maybe in the USA but world wide I think you'll find that distinction is held by the .303 British by a vast difference. Also killed more game than any other individual cartridge. Winkroger

Duckear,
Great topic and thread. You should be proud of yourself! I sure am glad you don't require any rational reasoning behind these choices, but I just don't like these:

270 Win.
243 Win.
30-06 Gov't.

Yes, probably the three most commonly found in N.America.
Probably because most of the users "I" have run into think their (insert caliber here) will do anything on the planet. roflmao

This is hilarious.

If I had to choose any particular cartridge to hate, which is against my nature, I think it would have to be the .280. Not because there's anything wrong with it, but because of the tendancy for .280 fans to launch into all those humorous theoretical gyrations about how much better it is than the .270.

Puh-leeze!

There isn't a dimes worth of difference between the .270 and the .280. Give it up.

rx,

I suppose I wouldn't argue with your wives either. That is a good response, but I was pokin fun at the limp dick F4 pilots who usually didn't live up to their claims either. Didja ever play "Dead Bug"??

I've killed deer with both of them and they both work great, but if I had to fall off the fence it would be on the side of the .280 but not for any particular reason.

My best to your wifes!!

The following don't appeal to me:

> WSMs, WSSMs, SAUMs, just not needed
> RUMs, STWs, or .30/.338-378 Weatherby, just get a big bore to begin with
> 22 Hornets, 218 Bees, 219 Wasps and other assorted flying pests

Give me a 22-250, a 6.5x55 (or .260), a 7mm Rem Mag and a .375 H&H. Like another gentleman previously stated, I have not had any luck with .270s.

With the only criteria being "I don't care for them" the list would look something like the following:

243
244
264
7mm-08
280
284 (very high on the list, maybe Number uno!!)
7mm Mags
308
8mm Mag
358 Norma
358 STA

Add to this all short and super-short Mags all the Weatherby Mags, and all the Ultra long Mags.

It probably would be easier to say "What do you care for?". roflmao

Also, the header specified "great caliber." Since the 45-70 is not, by any sane criteria, a great caliber, it is not qualified to be discussed in this thread.

In rifles, the only caliber I truly don't like, and I don't know why, is the 7mm. Strange because I think 6.5mm's are wonderful. There are also several calibers I just don't see myself ever getting, specifically 24, 25, and 27, give me a 22, 26 (6.5mm) or 30 any day.

In handguns I pretty much like them all, though I don't see myself ever getting a 25 cal or a 40 cal.

I don't really care for a 270 win. I have one and it shoots great but, I'd rather take my 30-06 any day even though the 270 will out shoot it. I don't hate the round, just don't really like it.

I don't hate any cartridge but I have no use for any long action cartridge.

If you're going to use that long of a case, why not just use a magnum?

I use the medium bore short action cartridges from 243 to 308 and if I need more power I just go to my 7 mag, or my 300 or my 375.

Everything in between the short actions and the magnums is just wasting powder to get medium level performance.

On my shit list:

The 44 Magnum and any handgun caliber larger than the 45 Colt.

The 243
The 280 Remington
The 308 Winchester
The 338-06
The Ackley Improveds
The new SAUMs, RUMs, WSMs and WSSMs

And off topic, but germain to hunting: bows and arrows. I don't have any use for them either.

Never liked the .243, seemed like it is to big for a varmit and to small for larger game.

The .270 doesn't do much for me, but that is because growing up everyone had a .270.

I do like the .308 Win, but that is because it was the first round I reloaded, killed my first deer, etc. A 30-06 would be better, but I grabbed a .308 off the rack instead.

I detest the new short magnums. I think anything in 338 or 35 caliber is a waste. And I hated buying my 06 and disliked shooting it. But since it was lighter than my other rifles I carried it. Then one day after counting up the critters I realized I shot more animals with it than all my mags lumped together. Used to hate the 223 but with the prices of good ammo I have learned to like it as well.
Oh, and I hate any cartridge that requires expensive reloading dies or brass!

Ok I'll bite. I dislike 243, 270, and 30-06.
In my eyes the 243 isn't quite right for varmits or deer. My mentor hated the 270 because it just "didn't do the job right". Since he's killed more animals than I'll ever see, I listen to him. The 30-06 is another good at everything but master of none. If I only had one rifle that would be it. But thankfully we can have more than one.
I do have a 30-06 in a weatherby ultralight (got it at a good price) and use it a lot since it carries nicely. But I wish it was a 280 since I like the 7mm caliber, another influence from my mentor.
Now, I was going that route until the 7SAUM came out. While a lot of you guys hate it it does fill niche for me. It's basically a 280AI but without fireforming. Recoil is not bad and it is in a light gun. It's not a 7 rem mag the marketing company wants you to believe but it's close enough. If I need more energy I'll step up to my 338 win mag.
Just my opinion that I can't really defend why. It's just what I feel so no need to flame.

Let's see, the 7mm Rem Mag, 308, 300 Win Mag, any RUM or SAUM, anything with the names Weatherby or Lazzaroni and the 243. Like others have said it's too small for big game and too big for varmints, it tries to do two jobs and sucks at them both.
