Thanks for the tip Mike.

I wasn't aware that airlines (other than BA) weren't allowing cameras in your carry on? What about binoculars?

I recently discovered that Canada considers scopes to be gun parts as well. I had to get a Temporary Export Permit for my firearms, and then a separate one for my ammunition and rifle scopes too! I thought the firearms export thing was enough...couldn't believe I needed a permit for the consumable ammunition and the optics that I just happen attach to my firearms, but have no possible capacity to hurt anyone on their own. Roll Eyes

Welcome back!

Cheers,
Canuck

This trip of a lifetime could not have gotten better...But I must tell you all this...Got into Amsterdam and had to get boarding passes and we asked the KLM girl who was a doll, to see if she could move us closer to the door for the final flight home...We were in 43rd row...She says you are in ROW 1 any farther forward you would be flying the plane....Some anonymous donor upgraded my wife and I to business class...What a surprise...First class to Detroit..

pretty jet lagged....much more in coming days

Now Mike, none of us want to see you doing any "that's a nice trophy", "I love my double", "I think the Barnes TSX bullets are the best" posts.

The next post you write HAS to be your hunt recap. We all have been waiting for details.

Hi all,

Matt checking in. While my mom and dad are sleeping off their jet lag, I figured I would try to post a few pictures. If I am unsuccessful, you can see a few selected pics uploaded to the following address:
http://picasaweb.google.com/retreever/TanzTest

Now here is my attempt to get some pictures into the thread:

Hi guys,

Matt here. If you cannot see the pictures here in the thread, try right clicking on the red x and choosing 'show picture' or something like that. I think that is due to having some security feature turned on or off.

The llink is working, but the page just shows little red X's. I think there is a question mark at the end of the link that is messing things up.

If you are going to carry a big stick, you've got to whack someone with it at least every once in while.

Want to make this perfectly clear..Maybe my ramblings did not make full sense...Rifle scopes are not allowed in carry ons...Both TSA supervisors used the term rifle parts...Must be checked...

My sincerest thanks from my wife Cherie, and I to Ray Atkinson for his participation in putting the hunt together, to Saeed for his profound generosity, to Pierre' van Tonder for donating a first class sixteen day buff hunt, to Kathi Klimes for handling the travel arrangements, and to anyone else who remained anonymous for their contributions and support. As I said before, this was my dream come true, and I was fortunate enough to share it with everyone.
My mind is still foggy from jet-lag (does age have anything to do with it), and I am overwhelmed with my memories of the past 3 weeks. But I do promise to share these memories within the next day or 2. Cherie kept a journal and will help me sort things out, and coach me as I write the stories.

Sincerely,
Mike

Mike,
Welcome back, it looks like you had an astounding hunt. Before you left the level of excitement in your posts was unbelievably high, I think you must have known what was coming. After seeing some of your pictures and realizing I'll be with Pierr'e in just under a month, well it's gonna be hard to keep my mind on work.
Once again, congratulations on an outstanding Safari.

Mamba attacks

We were off to the lion bait to see if simba came back...The three hour drive was filled with sights and sounds of Africa and we were hunting our way to the bait...Our normal driver, Hamilton came down with malaria and was out of the driver's seat...So Anneli, Pierre's wife took over the driving duties and she enjoyed getting out of camp...We were about half way to the bait and on the improved road, a dirt road with which one can go safely at 20 kilometers an hour instead of the normal 5 to 10 kilometers an our..
I am in the left side of the rear bench my wife is in the middle and Pierre' is in the right side...Two trackers, Dominic and Twiga are sitting on the spare tires behind us in the same order as the names appear...All of a sudden Dominic dives behind me almost on my wife and I turn to my left to see what caused the disturbance and at the same time I hear a thud against the side of the land cruiser..
There about six feet away from me and about 2 feet off the ground I see the snake...I have a love hate relation with snakes , but this guy is huge..
A few days before I saw my first mamba at about 20 feet when tracking buf and Dominic sees it in front of him and jumps to the side...Not black as his name but greenish grey and not fat like a big rattler...But fast, fierce, and venom that makes a rattler's look like candy...
My mind is screaming mamba and close and I get it, mamba out of my mouth mamba...We are all scrambling to see if Dominic has his life cut short by minutes...The truck screeches to a halt...I am already out of my seat unconsciously have grabbed the big 450 #2 and it is open and I am dropping those big equilizers into the breech... All minds are focused..Pierre is asking in Swahili something I do not recognize, but I figured it out as "did the snake bite you"...Dominic is shaking and answering no..Pierre' is off the truck he goes around thefront and I come off my side and Twiga grabs the shooting sticks and a panga...We are all if active hunting mode to put an end to this attack..I yell the snake is about 15 feet behing the truck and 4 feet off the road.. Twiga is on my left and the snake is really pissed off he is still looking for a fight...But to be honest I came to a knife fight with a gun a real big gun... Pierre came from my right and both of us were no more then 15 feet from the snake.. I was raising the double and sighting of him where did I aim at the g--damn snake and Pierre fired a milisecond before me and the knife fight was over...
This all occured in maybe 20 seconds from start to finish..But damn a black mamba almost nine feet long, just turned my hair from grey to white...

Mike

Think I see the pict problem Retreever. The URL for the image has extra characters in it. If you can edit the picture posts so that it removes the characters between the ".JPG" and "[/IMG" They should all show up like this.

On this pict I simply deleted "?imgmax=640" and the picture shows.

Congrats on an outstanding hunt. You took full advantage of the opportunity. Well done!
