Anyone else noticed this the last year(s) ?

Many of the people that contributed here and hunted and travelled Africa on a yearly basis have stopped posting.

Got a very nice mail from a from a former AR member that wanted to share his last hunt with me, with those pics and animals It would have been a great hunt to share here on AR with the rest os us.

Are people hunting less (don't think so...)? Are people moving to other forums (again, not that I see)?

Or, are people afraid to post public ally things that could be used public ally to malign them? I personally don't post pictures with me in them for that reason - been burnt in the past.

I agree Anton that it seems to be less reports than past, wish is too bad.

I'm not going to Africa this year Frowner so won't have anything to report. But, will post about US & Europe trips.

AR is a great resource, but being anonymous seems to bring out the worst in people! And if you speak to an AR member outside AR they will be the first to say that there are many people on AR who are nothing more than rabble rousers. Unless that is better policing I am afraid it will continue to loose more good members. Not to mention people in the business who I am sure would be able to share a lot more knowledge than they do for the fear of being crucified!

Interesting question.

On the surface ... nothing at all.

Dig a little deeper ... more than you realize. Just basing that on the PMs, emails, and phone calls I've received from guys who no longer post here, but have read a few recent threads.

Some of the behavior is very disappointing . Some lay in wait just to bash some unsuspecting person. Since joining AR,I have become absolutely convinced there is a God. I am sure he posts here under at least 20-30 names.

I also know some good, inexperienced people who have quit posting .

Better policing?

I am afraid I do not agree with you.

"better policing" means more censorship, and we are not prepared to do that here.

Agreed, some time ago, I joined AR, and then quit after a few days. I thought "what a bunch of angry, combative, self-important knuckleheads those guys are." But I returned after awhile, and now find that Pagosawingnut and Todd Williams really aren't that bad after all :-)

Anton,

I agree... I have several former or I should say non-posting AR members who don't post any more because of a variety of reasons mentioned to me.

They seek me to do their TrophyShot digital-enhancements and I certainly believe we could have benefited from their DG hunt report experiences in some very interesting safaris that we often don't read about here.

Yet many of those that don't post are on here reading this thread right now.

They haven't gone away because they either see benefit or entertainment in reading AR.

If they choose to only contribute by sending selective emails to individuals that is their choice.

The only big change I've seen is in the hunt reports, and that is because of all the chest beating beatdowns in the past about shooting animals that aren't 100yrs old with only one tooth left. If it's not the PERFECT , old, worn out , one foot in the grave critter then your an unethical jerk for shooting it. Why would anyone want to post a hunt report if there's a good chance of this happening.

I have to say that I really enjoy this site and have learned a great deal from the members who regularly post here. I have also observed a trend in an increasing number of people who seem to be unable to disagree with people in a civilized and rational manner, and resort to insult and personal attacks. I believe a vast majority of the members enjoy reading of the other members experiences and use that information to either learn from or just for entertainment either way it is a positive. Kudos to people like Todd Williams, Michael458,retreever, Biebs etc. keep up the good work, and ignore the idiots. Big Grin

I couldn't agree more Larry. It's beyond my comprehension that there are (adult/productive/employed) people out there with so much time that they must lurk on internet forums waiting for the opportunity to annoy and/or harass random people for their own entertainment. It's sad and pathetic really.

Rhyme of the Sheep Hunter
May fordings never be too deep, And alders not too thick; May rock slides never be too steep And ridges not too slick.
And may your bullets shoot as swell As Fred Bear's arrow's flew; And may your nose work just as well As Jack O'Connor's too.
May winds be never at your tail When stalking down the steep; May bears be never on your trail When packing out your sheep.
May the hundred pounds upon you Not make you break or trip; And may the plane in which you flew Await you at the strip.

Thanks for that observation Jerry. I went on a super buff/kudu hunt in Zambia, killed a nice cape buffalo, and a nice kudu. Had a great hunt in a very remote area on the Luangwa River. I was not about to post a hunt report only to have the armchair experts pick apart every detail of my hunt. That buff sure is soft bossed, how come that kudu so small, etc, etc, ad nausem........

I would like to post a hunt report to share with others to tell you all how good the PH was, how great a very remote camp can be or all the other details of the hunt. Until the assholes who critize others hunts shutup, I'll just keep it to myself.

I would post my hunt reports but my experiences with the site in posting pictures was so frustrating that I just gave up on it. Perhaps its not as hard as it seems but if I could just insert a picture directly it would certainly encourage more reports.

Perhaps I am assuming incorrectly that very few want to read an all-prose report!

That said, I do post frequently and the site is a great source of knowledge on bullets, rifles and reloading. Perhaps just less so on outfitters and hunts which seem to be only about good hunts or wild controversies.

What is left out are reports on bad or unsatisfactory hunts because of the attacking trolls and aggressive outfitters that blame their problems on the traveling hunter!

I agree with the fact that it is not fun to post like it used to be or even to read some days.

Example I post asking something about what species might be fun to hunt in a certain region...and the thread becomes an interrogation on who I am hunting with and where I’m hunting...I post about RSA and it hardly gets a look and then soon after a thread starts about how high fence is not hunting.
It was always great for the average guy that gets a chance to go to a great place. Not all of us have the huge dollars but save to go on our dream hunt AND JUST WANT TO SHARE IT. But we seem to get trashed by the "arm chair experts"(Not to be confused with the actual experts that help so much)

It’s disappointing because we do have an amazing group with lots of knowledge and experience to share. I have learned so much and appreciate so many of you. This trip will be my 4th “hunt of a lifetime” to Africa, but for me most of my posting is done. I always hoped I could share my love of the hunt and the passion I have for Africa.

Totally disagree.

For starters tell me someone who can age your Buff against a Kudu or Puku?

If you felt that your PH did his best under the time constraints and indeed the area then state it.

I have hunted Buffalo for meat and to be honest some of those hunts were the best,

I certainly would not imply that I am one of the "missing contibutors," but one thing that has definitely kept me from even looking at AR the last few months is the fact that the hunting forums are getting so clogged up with political topics. I'm certainly not suggesting that no one should post about those things, but perhaps the moderators could send them to the poltical forum?

Just my two cents.
