As many of you know I worship PHC and wish to be a famous African novelist. With that in mind my novel is short just a chapter or two. I would love to do a chapter on the average amount of shots to anchor a Buff. Caliber, weight and quantity please. My experience is as follows; Buff 1 470 500gr 6 Buff 2 470 500gr 11 Buff 3 470 500gr 5 buff 4 500 570gr 6 buff 5 470 500gr 3 Thanks for your help with my much anticipated African hunting novel. Bad shooting or just good times? Chipolopolo

0 buff, thousands of shots.. Amazing how much fun one can have in their mental game room. I would be hesitant to critisize Chipshots shooting skills. I have never shot a buff, but it does seem to be good business to keep whacking one as long as he is on his feet, and even then a couple more when he is down. Bullets are cheap and no way to keep score. Animals down and that we all walked away from is. (When I was a kid my father used to tell me that God hated a coward, I finally realized he has even less use for a fool.)

If they're still standing, perhaps it shouldn't be called an insurance shot? When I think of "insurance" shot, it's on an animal that either appears to be dead or so near to it, that it probably can not arise. You are correct to say that if they are still on their feet, you should still be shooting if possible. Steve "He wins the most, who honour saves. Success is not the test." Chipolopolo, I like your honesty. Me, 1 cow, lost 2 bulls and a total of 6 shots fired. I drew 3 drops of blood on the first bull. I was following him in the jess with my sights, had him in the shoulder,I squeezzed off just as he stopped. 3 drops from the brisket. Next bull was in the jess also.Shoulder hit, we followed him up twice.Huge piles of blood, started to get late and PH and myself thought it was getting risky. We had to leave Moz. that night,so the trackers and another PH were going to get the bull the next morning. All thought he would be dead in am. Never did find out what happened. What a great experience hunting Buff, in the jess! Brings out all your senses! Can't wait to take my youngest next time.

#1 .416 Rem Barnes 400 grain TSX 1 Shot, was in thick cover, no second shot, found him 100 yards away down #2 .416 Rem Barnes 400 grain TSX 1 Shot, was in a herd, when the herd ran after the shot I became a spectator for a moment, luckliy the buffalo dropped in less than 30 yards. As per the advice of PHC I paid the insurance on both as we came near them.

69, Thanks, the furthest shot I've taken is about 40 yards, never scoped usually with alot of bush around. Shooting and waiting around is different in each case but I really don't take the critisism as anything but jealousy, as I am going to be a famous African hunting novelist someday. Chipolopolo

I can't explain Chippie's shooting but I can say that I agree if the buffalo is barely on its feet and even on the way down I think it prudent to keep shooting and then put one or two in as it expires. OK I'm in. Buff Bull #1 2 .416 Rigby 400gr TSX, 1 .470 NE 500gr. Initial shot a little back, second in the hip, PH shot it as it ran into the Jess with a brain shot. Buff Cow #2 1 .375 H&H 300gr TSX, 1 .470 NE 500 gr. soft. Initial shot bang/flop, but I wanted to try the PH's double, so I put the insurance in with his rifle. Buff Bull #3 2 .416 Rigby 400gr TBSH Bang/flop, and an insurance shot. Buff Bull #4 3 .416 Rigby 400gr TSX, 1 458 Lott 500gr TSX First shot took out the heart, but it ran for the concession border so we both unloaded on it. Any of the hits would have been fatal eventually. He ran a total of maybe 75 yards. Buff Bull #5 3 .416 Rigby 400gr TSX First shot a little off, but enough to sicken him so that when we came back he was lying down 50 yards from where he was shot; shot again and then insurance. Buff Bull #6 5 .375 Swift A frame, 1 .416 Rigby TSX, 5 458 Lott of various bullet types. Another hunters buff that we tracked together Only 1 chest hit, and an insurance shot. My take. Shot placement is EVERYTHING.

I admire you for admitting to such pathetic shooting( it takes a real man to own up to such as this). i could have sworn that i read somewhere that it is all about proper shot placement. 1 buff, 1 shot. .375 H&H, Barnes TSX(spined). if poor shooting will make you a famous African novelist, your career is assured. on the other hand, maybe Gator 1 has the right idea- instead of writing a book, take shooting lessons might be a better idea.
