David,

Alistair Norton is a PH that worked for John DuPlooy in Zambia and several posters here have hunted with him.

OK...I'll chime in:

Buff 1- 470 1 shot quartering away, 2 more as he decided he wanted some "close-up" action and 1 as he was on the ground .....probably dead.
Buff 2- A REAL long shot on the plains in Zambia...175 yards..404 Jeff...then a 1.5 hour follow-up and a quick right then left with a 450/400 double. Proper.

Steve...how about a thread on double shooting? Caliber, distance to game, number of misses, etc. This could go into the "odds and ends" section at the back of your novel.

Buff 1 470 500gr 6
Buff 2 470 500gr 11
Buff 3 470 500gr 5
buff 4 500 570gr 6
buff 5 470 500gr 3

Thanks for your help with my much anticipated African hunting novel.

Bad shooting or just good times?
Chipolopolo

I cannot give you much detail, but when we tried to work this out a few years ago, we were getting over 70 per cent 1 shot kills on buffalo using the 375/404 and Barnes X 300 grain bullets.

Buffalo are not hard to kill if your first shot is well placed.

I have seen one taking 12-14 shots from a friend, using the same rifle and bullet combination.

I have shot quite a few. Most have been shot with a 416 Remington Magnum. Mostly with 400 grain Swift A Frames. I have shot a few with solids. Probably no more than 5 shot with other rifles( 375 H&H /500 NE).

My guess would be 65-75% one shot kills. I am including those who are clearly down for the count but I put another in to end the suffering .

I will tell you 2 of the worst . One of my one shot kills required an 18 mile follow up . Long story.

I shot one in TZ right through the lungs. A hundred or so yards away I spotted him laying down. The PH has me shoot him on the ground 3 times. Let me add that we were probably at 20/25 yards. I am standing there like a dumb ass reloading. The buff gets to his feet and makes a feeble attempt to get to us. As I recall I shot him 3 more times.

A few years ago I surveyed my African hunting partners as to what % of their Cape Buff kills were one shot/DRT. It worked out to 20% and that is exactly what my count was as well. Minimum number of Buff taken was 10. All mine have been taken with a 416RemMag, except one taken in the Moz swaps with a S&W500 revolver. I now carry larger calibers, primarily because Elephant is the DG I hunt most regularly.

I almost choked when I saw the alias posted again. BTW Steve, I like you a lot better in your current persona. Chipolopolo was a dick. 2020

Multiple shots on buffalo (our buffalo anyhow FWIW) is mostly about the animals ability to stay on its feet and keep moving - as much or more so than accurate shooting and equipment selection. Keep shooting them - unless you broke both shoulders with the first shot you can not know what your first shot did exactly - till the animal is dead.

Even though I have a different screen name, I still subscribe to the theory; shoot till unloaded at the skinning shed. What fun is just one shot after all the effort getting to Africa?

And as far as ol' Chip being a dick, the next thing you're going to try and convince me of is Adrook was a dick too.

Actually I liked Chipo and ADrook. Actually really miss ADrook.

This was back before we had given up on the world and were looking for things to do when we could not hunt anymore. I liked it better that way.

Hi Lane,
I think something has happened to internet forums in general. I frequent several boards, all different interests. A boating forum a bike forum and AR.

People seem to have lost their sense of humor. Andy and I were just having laughs and pointing out irony. We were never, ever serious.

All the forums seem to have devolved to less posters and those left seem very intolerent.

If you go back to 2008 and 2009, a thread was on the front page for hours, not weeks like now. Andy and I pissed some folks off but I belive we also made folks laugh.

The thread that got Andy banned was the CB, Brittany thread. CB and Andy are actually pretty good friends now and CB actually mentions Andy by name in one of his articles.

Shame, we take ourselves so seriously, we can't just laugh out loud when something is funny.

Hi back Steve,
Something didn't happen to the internet forums...it happened to humanity...and it wasn't for the better.

beer to the then times!

PC, social media, forgetting normal human behavior, glorifying sick behavior.

That is what happened to us.

And it surely not for the better!

A lot of water has gone under the bridge since I posted this in 2009. A lot of Buffalo have hit the ground as well.

just in 2012, I killed 5 Buffalo, three were Asiatic Water Buffalo from OZ, two were Central Savanna Buffalo from CAR.

The three Asiatic Wtaer Buffalo were killed as follows:

500NE .570 gr Woodleigh, softs. 3 of em, starting at about 10 yards.

450-400 3-1/4 .400 gr Woodleigh softs. 2 shots at about 80 yards. My longest Buffalo shots ever.

450-400 3-1/4 .400 gr Woodleigh softs. 4 shots, all heart lung at about 20 yards.

Central Savanna,

.375 .260 gr Accubonds. 3 shots, two frontal, one raking

.375 .260 gr Accubonds. 4 shots, one standing, three running.

I think I just have a different shooting philosophy on killing Buffalo. I NEVER shoot and see what happens. I shoot, usually both barrels, reload and shoot till the Buffalo is not only down, but dead.

The Central Savanna Buffalo; I didn't bring a DR to CAR. I also really struggled with my choice of .260 gr bullets. I felt more comfortable using only one load for everything on that safari, rather than changing loads based on what might present itself. The performance was actually surprising.

I probably could have stopped at one or two on both of them. But, like I said, dangerous game gets shot at till I run dry or the sun goes down…or both.
