This is somewhat of a spin off from Fairgame's thread. It has to do with the size of Crocs. Bare in mind I have not been to Africa (yet). I see hunters in pics with 14 ft to 15 ft crocs and they do not look any where near as large as the ones I have seen in old films where Wildebeast and Zebras are crossing rivers in migration and get tagged by these mini dinosaurs. I do realize a 17 ft croc probably weighs near twice what a 15 ft does but I am curious if these river monsters in these old films were closer to 18-20 ft. I am also curious what a healthy 18ft croc would weigh? I understand they never quit growing.

Not sure exact weight, but we had a client kill an 18.5' croc in Ethiopia a few years ago that was absolutely gigantic. Not only was he long, but as you said he was about twice as wide as a 15' croc, making him look even bigger than he already was. He had an estimated 2 feet of his tail missing as well, but there aren't many crocs over 20 feet out there. I shot a 14 footer in Zambia a couple of years ago. I was told that 20+ footers used to be fairly common, maybe 50 years ago.

Australia is home to some giant Saltie's. Problem is, they decided not to open the season this year. When they do, hold on to your hat's, we're going to hunt some dinosaurs! Here is a pic of a Mara river "monster". He was sunning himself about 80 m away and i only had a small camera with me..... I estimated him to be around 16 foot (straight line) based on some others i could see closer that must have gone 14 - 15 ft. The most impressive thing was the girth of this guy as a result of feasting on wildebeest. These "Mara" crocs appear larger than they are due to their girth.....Measuring over the curve adds approx 1 ft. "...Them, they were Giants!" J.A. I racall some TV programing where as a croc would explode out of the water, snag a wildebeast and sling it back in the river. The head on the croc appeared a 1/2 the size of the wildebeast itself. I think this area for videoing these scenes must not be unlike the area where tourist take pics of Alaskan brown bears fishing for Salmon. A single point where there are exceptionally sized specimans. I was watching the news a few nights ago and evidently they have a 16 ft saltwater croc in the Fort Worth zoo. I may have to take a jaunt over there on a nice spring day.

Lake Chamo!! If only they would not have closed it to Croc hunting, what a shame. eezridr - the place in AK. you are referring to is the McNeil River Game Sanctuary, inside Katmai National Park. Although one cannot hunt inside the park, the Katmai Preserve which lies at the park border does have an exclusive guide area. Many clients of mine have shot some big bears in Katmai, its an awesome area!!

Back East here in the States we have a croc named "Utan" at a park in Mrytle Beach that is 20 ft. long. I have seen him up close and he is huge. If you ever go to Sun City, the croc exhibit is a must. I have been twice. If I ever go to Sun City again, I will absolutely visit the croc exhibit again. The first time we went, I saw this big croc. I told the wife that I guessed it was 18 1/2 feet. They gave is the metric measurement. It was 18'5 1/2". This was with about 2 feet of it's tail gone! We went back the next year. The large croc was not there. We were told that it was killed by one of the smaller crocs. Smaller meaning something like 17'. These guys get in with the crocs & feed them. It is amazing and scary as hell at the same time.

That is the size croc I seem to remember tagging those zebras and wildebeast and slinging them in the river. I do not mean pulling them in, i do mean slinging them. The guy in the pic needs serious help or he has a mean wife and wants to end it all!

one thing for sure- a large croc is the most underrated animal in Africa to hunt. great eyesight, sense of smell and hearing. he has spent probably 60 plus years in the same relatively small area and knows every bush, log, rock, and mud flat in that area and KNOWS when something is out of the ordinary. i have been fortunate to take a 14 and 15 footer in Moz. and worked hard to do it. Crikey, but there are some big reptiles posted hereinabove. I hear that Ethernopia is the place to go for dinosaurs these days. Never have killed one myself. May have to change that some day. Mike Wilderness is my cathedral, and hunting is my prayer.

Think hunting has now been closed in lake Chammo in Ethopia? Some of these trophies depicted here are first class and for those who have never hunted a big croc is it a very wothwhile pursuit and one worthy of a safari alone. Gomek...no longer alive. He was a salt water that was sent to the US years ago. He was one of three but the smallest. Oscar and Cassius stayed in Australia and on display at Green Island, just off the coast from Cairns. Gomek was a bit over 17 feet http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ssmTN2kCgMQ

Never in my life did I want to absolutely kill a critter on sight-always- until I saw what a croc does. I spent nearly a month in the Zim bush (Chirisa) (in May) and hated them. They are the only critter on earth that I would like to see become extinct tomorrow. Yeah, yeah, I'm wrong -but that's how I feel. (The gentle plant eating dinosaurs like Barney are gone and this nightmare critter has survived? Something is wrong with the equation)
