Not on his condition but some info on what happened. Apparently the hunting client messed up the side brain shot on a bull elephant. The bull started to take off so Phil immediately jumped up after it for follow up shots but the bull turned and charged. I don't know if Phil got a shot off or not before being mauled. This is second hand info from a well respected Zim PH. Short on details but
basically accurate.

This is the latest I have found:

UPDATE 10:30am GMT 27/12/2020
"Disappointing news as they have decided to pull out and not do the surgery today. When they turned Phil over his BP dropped and they couldn't get it better. Please pray for Phil as he deals with this mental blow when he is awake."
UPDATE 6am GMT 27/12/2020
Please pray for Phil’s operation today as it will be a long operation:
- That Phil would remain stable through the op.
- That his breathing will be good.
- No infection.
- Controlled or little bleeding.
Thank you all the support. Xx
UPDATE from Leah Smythe at 12:20pm 26/12/20
“Wow, what a morning! I have been able to see Phil 3 times this morning in between paying bills and sorting out admin. He is doing much better and the doctor is wanting to do the surgery during this good window of Phil’s recovery. So he will be moving this evening from Health Point to Avenues as this is the only hospital which has all the machines which they may possibly need for doing Phil’s surgery on his neck and back.
Please pray for the following:-
-Continued strength in his lungs before the operation
-For God’s peace as he is starting to try and piece together information
-For his moving from one hospital to the other (there will be lots of moving which will give him a lot of pain).
-for the medical team to have a good night’s sleep before the surgery in the morning
-For Phil to have a good night too
-For no obstacles in all that needs to be done medically
-For the operation in itself
-For an end result which will be miraculous and give God all the glory!”

I have heard that they have confidence in the medical team there. PHIL is at a private hospital. Not saying it is world class but they are comfortable with his care thus far is my understanding. He was supposed to have surgery today but because of Low blood pressure they’re putting it off till tomorrow. Please keep PHIL and his family in your prayers.

Couple questions if someone could let me know:

- To donate on DSC Frontline do I just need to put Phil’s name in the ‘donation for the benefit of’ box?

- Will 100% of the donation go to Phil’s needs through the DSC Frontline donation?

The DSC Frontline is definitely the easiest way for me to donate, but I want to send where my dollar will go the farthest for Phil and his family.

Thanks for the help!

Latest info I have seen. I got this from the UK-based charity Hope Works which is run by Phil's Father-in-Law

UPDATE 7am GMT 28/12/2020
The operation that was planned for Phil today could not go ahead because he was too unstable when lying on his stomach (he needs to be in this position to access his spine)
His oxygen levels decreased significantly in this position.
Phil has numerous fractures in many of the his ribs on both sides, as well as a fractured breast plate (sternum) and his fractured spine. He also has bruised lungs. He is now ventilated in ICU and this will give him a great opportunity to have a machine breathe for him, and for him to rest. He is deeply sedated. If you pray, please pray for his peace and for the wisdom of his medical team.
Thank you.
From Leah: Dr Gunning has been brought onto the team due to Phil’s increased temperature and therefore possible infection. He has already started him on certain meds he was keen to have him on last night. We are waiting to hear confirmation on the state of his heart but we were given a provisional view that his heart seemed fine. We wait on the ECG for this morning.
Please pray for the medical team as they bring more specialists on board and the strategize Phil care.
Please pray against infections.
Please pray for miraculous healing him his spine! Nothing is too difficult for our God, the God who formed and made Phil and loves him.

UPDATE from Leah - 7:20pm GMT 28/12/2020
Good evening precious friends and family. Today has been a good day!
- We praise God that there are no problems with Phil's heart on any of the tests
- his lungs are improving and the internal bruising is healing.
- his kidneys have improved
- Phil had a high temperature after theatre yesterday. It is still high but has started to lower and the antibiotics should have made a significant difference in the next 48hrs
- there is a possible site of infection on his left shin (underneath his plaster so this will be removed and a back slab used instead) Please pray for this to be sorted soonest!
- Phil's blood pressure has been normal and steady today as his meds to stabilise his blood pressure have been lowered. This is really good news - it means his body is doing it mainly by itself! THANK YOU LORD! The meds have decreased significantly from 10-2
- Phil is coping well on the ventilator, with good oxygen saturation and needing less support from the ventilator. Phil is doing the breathing himself and the ventilator is just supporting him - he has improved significantly.
Essentially the doctors are saying his is still sick but his improvement is very pleasing. This is God - He is working in Phil’s body to have it this far already in this period of time.
Please keep on praying!

UPDATE from Leah - 6am GMT 29/12/2020
Good morning prayer warriors-
Dr Gunning has seen Phil and his temp spiked again last night above 40. We are suspecting Malaria (which he got last October for the first time) and so we have started him on a specific intravenous drug for Malaria. Please pray the drug works quickly and effectively to bring down his temp.

Sorry, but to state "suspecting Malaria" and starting an intravenous drug for Malaria doesn't say much for the hospital.

The drugs used in treating malaria are quite heavy on a normal patient and the hospital should first confirm the presence of the parasite before administering a hard-hitting drug (likely artesunate) to an already seriously wounded and grieving body as the side-effects can be very negative.

In this neck of the woods one doesn't have to go to hospital for a malaria check as there are self-test kits readily available over the counter, therefore testing at the hospital is the order of the day and my opinion in my opening paragraph holds firm.

Leah,
I do not know you or Phillip and you do not know me. I do recognize your Faith in God and realization that reliance on Him is your only hope. Keep the Faith, stay the course, you are a good woman and your family is fortunate to have you leading them. Me and mine will be praying on this side for you and yours.

UPDATE: 7:40pm GMT 29/12/2020
Good evening special friends and family,
Today has been a tough fight for Phil as he has had a high temp over 40 during the day. The Doc has said Phil’s malaria test came back negative but we will continue the full course of treatment for it anyway as it does not affect anything else he is on.
He is on 4 antibiotics now and two of which can affect his kidneys. He has also had 3 units of blood transfused today to help him. Please pray for
- his temperature to come down
- for his kidneys to keep strong as well as his liver
- for rest for him - that he would not be anxious for anything
- for healing with his rib fractures
- for pressure sores to be minimal as the team has been told not to move him with his spinal injuries
- for there to be enough blood (he is O- ) if and when we need more
- for news of improvement in the morning.
Thank you so much for your prayers already. May this journey we are all on be one that brings you closer to God as we all cling to Him in this time. Much love, Leah
Thank you for praying for his leg - the cast was removed and the leg showed no sign of infection, only bruising. Thank you Lord!
It has been put with a back slab to support his fracture and was sorted out this morning before I visited.

Fulvio- I am afraid you have this one wrong. I had a very good friend die of malaria this year. His tests were negative and by the time they decided to treat him it was too late.

The treatment for malaria is now Coartum which is a herbal drug and is not hard on the body. It is simply accepted that if you have a high temperature and have been anywhere near a malaria area you immediately get on the meds!

UPDATE: 7:15am GMT 30/12/2020
Good morning,
Dr Gunning has phoned this morning. Phil’s temperature is still high (40.3) and seems to be growing. After much researching and talking with Dr Nyakatawa who also did research, have decided to treat for something called malignant hyperthermia, which almost always follows anesthetic that affects someone who is genetically susceptible. It’s is also possible it was caused by his poly trauma. They have agree to start the antidote today and it will not affect any of his other treatments. The only other thing it could possibly be are the interactions with the drugs he is on.
They will be doing a full spectrum of blood tests after 10 this morning (due to his blood transfusion yesterday).
Please pray for his temperature to come down.
Please thank God that it looks like it is not malaria again.
Please keep praying for the medical team and they do their best it care for Phil.

I have followed this on AR and Hope Works on Facebook. With hope and prayers we are believing in the best possible outcome.

This is the last post on Hope Works Facebook page.

"Special prayer warriors - tonight we are laying Phil at God’s feet. The doctors have done all they can do. The meds are at their maximum. There is nothing a human being can really do to help him. They will keep doing ice baths to help bring the temperature down.
Please pray that his temperature will come down and that his blood pressure will come up.
He is in God’s hands and we trust Him for His will over Phil’s life.
Your prayers tonight are much needed."
