**** Phil Smythe - Medical Emergency ****

-------- URGENT APPEAL -----------

On Tuesday 22nd December 2020, Phil was mauled by an elephant while taking clients on a safari at Save Valley Conservancy in the South Eastern lowveld of Zimbabwe.

Phil is currently being stabilised at Triangle Hospital and is in critical condition. Phil is the son of Graham and Lyn Smythe, son-in-law of Stu and Kate Haw.

Donation Link: bit.ly/PhilSmytheEmergencyFund

Donations made through Hope Works will be passed on to Pastor Stu Haw who will manage the fund.

Please give what you can to help cover the medical and transport costs.

--------

UPDATE: Sean just spoke to Phil's dad, they are asking for prayers. Jacque’s son flew out with the Air Ambulance Helicopter to pick him up. He will be arriving in Harare at the hospital mid afternoon / early evening.

We hunted with Phillip last year and stay in pretty close touch and are hoping for the best outcome and waiting for a little more info before sending donations. He has two small children.

Just saw on Facebook.

UPDATE ON PHIL:

Phil is certainly not out of the woods yet, he needs your prayers more than anything as the injuries seem quite extensive from what we’ve been told.

We will keep you updated as soon as we get clarity on his injuries from the MRI scans and x-rays currently underway.

Thanks to everyone who is standing with us and the family. Your support makes a huge difference.

UPDATE at 6:30pm GMT 22/12/20
"After MRI and X-rays Phil has a broken arm leg and spinal injury as well as bleeding into his chest. Now we wait on specialists, thanks so very much for your ongoing prayers."

I exchanged WhatsApp messages with Phil early this morning USA PC Time. Zim is nine hours ahead. Phil was finishing up his one and only hunt for 2020 and had just helped his client bag a big mature male lion. This elephant attack must have happened shortly after our exchange. Phil is one of the good guys and needs our help. I am sending my donation now.

Wishing him well; not the best way to spend Xmas.

The fact that you exchanged Whatsapp messages with him directly, and not knowing the full extent of his injuries, it can be considered encouraging in that he seems cohesive.

His one hunt of the year went upside down. I hate this year!

Horrible news PHIL is a friend. Has not worked all year. Doing this late hunt to earn for his family, two small children one on the way.

No finer person I know. If you can find it in your heart to donate I promise you PHIL is worth the investment.

A great PH and better person.

God bless you PHIL you are in my prayers.

I went to his FB page and one gentleman gave a video update. Phil has two arm breaks, one leg break, blood seepage in this chest which is being drained and most troubling two breaks in his spine, one in which the cord has been severed. It is going to be a long recovery and he and his family will need the help of our community. This sounds like a very worthy project for the Dallas Safari Club's Frontline Foundation.

I gave all the info yesterday morning to one of the DSC - FF board members...I was later told they were on it.

I've hunted with Phil several times...he was with me for several buffalo, and a couple of elephants - including my biggest at 82lb x 84lbs. I'll never forget the look on his face when we saw that ivory sticking out...he was more shocked than I was. Eeker

He's a fine, friendly and capable young man...such a tragedy he is not deserving of. I sincerely wish him the speediest of recoveries, and all the best to his young family.

Please if you have the ability...donate a little this Christmas season to help a fellow hunter in his dire time of need.

Thank you,

Everyone:

He is in bad shape. REALLY bad shape. His medical bills will be enormous. I am told he has no insurance.

A couple of important points:

1- DSC Frontline Foundation is making an immediate emergency grant . I am making my contribution through them.

2- Initially, I was a little put off by the English charity . Having to wire pounds sterling is a pain in the ass. My warning light went off with the discussion of the pastor who was going to control the account in Zimbabwe. Well, the pastor is Phil’s father in law. The eliminated my concerns.

Let me add that the DSC Frontline Foundation moved INCREDIBLY fast on this. Well done to them.

Here is an email I received from John Patterson of the Frontline Foundation.

Thanks Mike for your email. I became aware of this most unfortunate incident yesterday and have been working with Rob Lurie, chairman of ZPGA, to gather details. Phil was a member in good standing with ZPGA, was engaged in providing professional services when injured and there is a financial need. The Frontline board voted unanimously this morning to make an immediate grant to the Smythe family. I spoke to Leah Smythe (wife) this morning as well to express our concern and news of the forthcoming grant. This incident is similar to the Barry Style incident several years ago when Frontline made a three year financial commitment to the Style family except that Barry was killed. Even if Phil survives, the Frontline board realizes the family will have ongoing needs (like the Style family) and will address those needs as the future become clearer.

Thanks very much for your support of Frontline and the Smythe family. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. jcp

Frontline is stepping up to the plate and is deserving of our support.

His family will be impacted for the rest of their lives, and he will have a long road to recovery.

A Donation was made to Phillip Smythe through DSC Frontline.

Let's hope that SCI can match the grant.

Please contribute what you can .

There will be additional fund raising efforts shortly in the form of two raffles. One for an new in box Beretta Ducks Unlimited commemorative shotgun courtesy of Jeff H. The other for a hog hunt at my own personal ranch with me .

Details are being worked out. These efforts will probably start next week .
