My first one was a mountain zebra - actually on my first hunting day after a few failed stalks.  It's hard to put into words my first hunting day in Africa. My first African game was a bushbuck. If I were starting over again I'd start with a buffalo hunt and pick up the antelope along the way.  | |||

I cannot wait until I can answer this one in about 124 days, but it will either be Cape buffalo, zebra, wildebeest, hartebeest, impala, or warthog. 124 days until Africa and counting | |||

My first animal taken in Africa was a warthog. My latest a bull elephant. I quite like the idea of starting with the PG first, then moving up to DG. I think it just makes one appreciate the hunts more. John | |||

Mine was the Kruger Rand symbol; the Springbok. Took a 14.5 inch ram down on the Eastern Cape. Remains one of my favorite animals to hunt as they remind me of our Pronghorn Antelope. First was an old beat up buffalo, nothing to brag about for scoring but a great hunt. My first was this guy. All most 24" impala in Zululand, RSA. I took a picture of him the morning before while driving around the hunting area.  Graybird "Make no mistake, it's not revenge he's after ... it's the reckoning." | |||

Mine was a Black Springbok. We were driving in a big fenced in field, I was in the back, the Ph was driving. He stops and says see that Black Springbok, shoot him. I jump down, the Springbok ran off and the PH yelled "what the f**k are you doing"? I said "getting down to shoot him". He said, "I never said get out of the truck, shoot him from the back". We drove off and came on him again so I shot him from the back of the truck. The PH and tracker we're jumping for joy because he was so big. I was mortified and ashamed, that I could do such a thing and knew right then Africa was not for me. My next 4 trips were in wild places, with no fences, hunting animals that bite and gore and I knew then that Africa really was for me. | |||

Mine was a blue wildebeest on Central Estates in Zimbabwe. I was on a 9 day package deal and shot him on the second day......for the trophy fee as it wasn't on the list. | |||

Elephant bull take first day of first safari. It was a problem animal situation and not planned at all but the impala we took in the afternnon of the same day was not the thrill I had anticipated after the elephant. My first was a warthog taken with a classic African sunset in the back. PH was Boet Nel. Not sure if I will ever get to do the big five due to financial constraints, but I get to hunt all the creatures of Alaska every year, so I guess that makes up for it. Can't wait to get back to Namibia to spend time chasing plains game. | |||

First was a Hartman's Zebra, then baboon, Gemsbok, Kudu, and called in a Jackel. Only one I was looking for that I didn't take was a Warthog. Yes it's cocked, and it has bullets too!!! | |||

A bushpig that came out while we were trying to figure out how to get closer to the buffalo herd. Then an impala. Then an elephant. It was a nice start. Steve "He wins the most, who honour saves. I started with plains game in Natal, 16.5 in. bushbuck and 53 inch kudu...in 02... The ball has not stopped rolling 04 first buf and bull ele Zim.  The Selous in 06 shot a slew of animals, including 16 foot croc, leopard, hippo, buf, and a very big bull ele...      Have held two PANGOLIN"S and they have given me exceptional luck in Africa...  My retirement present, an second attempt for my first lion... I have lived my dream to have hunted Africa.. Mike | |||

retreever, ain't the Selous grand? Man, but this brings back the sweet and solemn memories. First blood for me was a southern impala - followed, on the same day, by a common waterbuck and an old, hard-bossed cape buffalo bull. Dawn to dusk fair chase hunting, spot and stalk, the old-fashioned way. In the Selous Game Reserve, Tanzania. The impala we used for leopard bait, and the waterbuck, and most of the buff, for lion bait. We also brought both a leopard and a lion to bag in due course. Although the lion was too smart and would not come to bait, so had to be stalked. We saved some of the first day buff's tenderloin for a delicious spaghetti Bolognese later in the evening, and saved his tail for ox tail soup the next day. As the old saying goes, the sun shines on every dog's ass at least once in a while, but it surely does help to be in the right sunny place at the right sunny time.  Mike Wilderness is my cathedral, and hunting is my prayer. | |||

Cape Buffalo in 1998 on the day I flew into the Okavango Delta. Not only was it my first African animal, it was my first big game animal of any kind. Previously everything that I shot had feathers on it. We ran into an old time Botswana PH, Willie Englebrecht, who's reply to my luck was "That's like going to the whorehouse the first time and getting the Madam". Willie was a real character, sadly he's no longer with us. Eleven days until I leave and try to do it again. | |||
