FYI -- For those of you who have a SS Professional Hunter action on order -- I called Montana Rifle and was told that it will be at least 60 days before they get to the SS PH with a .505 bolt face. I was also told that the CM PH's are being assembled and shipped at the rate of 3-5 per week.

Oh for Pete's sake, always the same bullshit.

What happened to shipping by February?

See 12th post about quarter way down

"at least 60 days before they get to" them?

My patience is wearing extremely thin at this point.

Saturday I get a call from Duane Wiebe, telling me that he has just received two actions belonging to me. At first I can't understand what he's talking about, then I remember that I had asked him some time ago to send a copy of his FFL to Montana Rifle with instructions to send the PH actions (two, which have been on order for years) to him for evaluation.

I suggest that Duane select the better of the two actions and build me a .416 Rigby with it. It becomes clear that Duane is reluctant to do this, although I am unable to pin him down to a specific reason. He finally says that having received the actions from the manufacturer, rather than from a customer, if he builds a rifle on one, then he is a manufacturer in the eyes of the ATF, which I have to admit is probably accurate. He suggests that he send the actions to my local FFL holder and I email him a copy of the FFL. By Monday the actions are on their way to me.

If Duane wants to do a detailed analysis of the actions, that's up to him. He did say that, given the price I paid for them, (slightly more than one half the current price) it gives me a lot of room to make improvements.

Mine was a 505 boltface that was sold...but there is also one that posted after mine with the 416 Rigby boltface. Both were/are good values for the dollars paid out for them. A CZ action don't compare...period!

This is the reply I received when I sent one of my PH actions to Joe Smithson (http://www.smithson-gunmaker.com/contact.htm)
for evaluation and determination as to whether one of his scope mounts could be fitted without further alteration:

"The action would need the usual clean up and fine tuning, polishing, feeding, lapping etc. but seems close to being ready to use. Aesthetically the bottom metal is not to my liking. I would probably make some changes to that...new bow with inside release and narrow the floor plate as much as possible, more angle to the box to give better forend."

What’s the latest on deliveries of the SS PH?

And, for those with the CM version, any info on bolt nose/c-ring clearance? Lately I’ve been thinking of a .338 Lapua for dynamite shoots, but if it won’t lock up tight it won’t cut it on gallon cans at 600 yards, or Heaven forbid, zombies out at the perimeter.

I recently called about a SS PH action I have on order. Spoke with Jeff and was told that the SS is in production and that all actions that are on order, both CM and SS, should be delivered by the end of summer.

The bolt nose is a tight fit in c-ring,
no wiggle at all. And as the bolt body is
already a tight fit in the action it
won't move anyway. I got my 585HSM
700H 3.25 and 700HE long
in them and and nothing gives.ED

I was told by Jeff that all actions would be shipped by end of this summer. That is coming up fast but still no action as of yet.

DANG! I would love to order a SS PH with a .505 bolt to build a .416 Cheytac (YES, you read that correctly, NOT a .408), but this is getting a bit rediculous. Sounds like someone needs to hire some help, as he certainly has a hot product. tu2

Doesn't sound like they will all get shipped before the end of summer as I was told by Jeff. Guess I'll be lucky to see mine by Christmas.

No, not by the end fo the summer Stick. Sorry, we were on track, but... to increase productivity we purchased 4 new machining centers and when we did that they shut the entire machine shop down for over a month to get the machines moved around for better production goign forward and to get the wiring in the right places. So it pushed everything back. It is what it is, I can't do anything about that. But they are really pushing them through now. And we have parts that are fitted so it won't take as long to put them together as the first batch of CM did. Just means there wont be as much hand fitting. Also we just received our first batch of American Black Walnut Stocks for the PH's (funny we got stocks before the actions are out to all back orders but again that's the way it is). I can show pictures to you as soon as I get some taken ( I do have some -unprofessional photos-meaning I took them myeself -so if any of you are interested in getting a stock and or barrel with the action let me know.

Perhaps my point of view is a bit colored from waiting and waiting and waiting... but what I read the above to mean is that, again, getting the PH actions out to those who've already paid is NOT A PRIORITY.

Jeff, if I send my PH action back your guys will put the barrel on it ( with sights ), blue all of the metal and install it in a stock, completely finished? If so, roughly what would it cost? Turn-around time?

PWS, that is incorrect, that is not what I said. We are continually trying to improve and grow. And that means updating and adding new machines and processes to do that. I'm sorry that you read into that statement differently but that is not the case. Our Priorities have had to change in the current economy but Customers have always been number 1. Sometimes however higher priorities have to give in order to stay a priority. If we are growing in this economy, it means you are going to get your parts ordered.
Woodrow, Absolutely. For guys who have actions already or anyone who still has an action on order we will make a special price for the completed rifle. Our new DGR Rifle which we are going to start shipping to Dealer Stores, after our back orders are filled, will come complete with the stock and barrel with Marble rear and front sights for MSRP around $2400. So minus the amount for the action and that will be your price. But you need to call in so we can work the price up for each person.

I gave up on them when the cut that gas escape hole on center line with the bore, therefore when you stock it "properly" the wood line that is also center bore is covering half the hole, and if gas ever escapes, its splinters galoore I suspect...

I figured if they were that out of touch with their chosen field then what else would cropt up so I peddled the actions I had and I I'm still using mod. 70s and Mausers..

Maybe the changed that feature, but I doubt it somehow.

I got essentially the same answer I got in March and August -- some parts are in, some parts are out to be heat treated and some parts are being fitted -- they indicated that they hoped to start shipping them out within the next 60 days. Again, the 60 day timeline is what I was told in March and August as well.

I called them yesterday. They told me that they have about 120 receivers ready to ship -- just waiting on the bolts to get back from heat treating. The 120 is new but the bolts at heat treating is what I was told in March, August and October.

I had experiences like this with a gunsmith here in Norway. I was 18 years old and had saved money for a year for a les baer .45 built by him. First estimate 2 months, then one week, for two years I was given weekly estimates like this. I was lucky and got my gun (did not feed and had to take it back three times), a lot of the other customers never got their weapons nor did they get their money back. I would be quick to demand, and I mean really DEMAND my money back in a situation like this. Smells real fishy...

I have to ask another question...why is that gun people put up with such things as this? I mean, really, it seems the norm to forgive a manufacturer for taking deposits and postponing a projects for up to several years. It also seems that when you send a firearm to some gunsmiths, not all, that it is expected to run several months to sometimes years past the promised finish date to get your project back.
Not trying to slam anyone here, but what is so wrong in making a contract for a certain product in a certain time and then exepcting everyone to honor that time line?
I would wager that any gunsmith or manufacturer would balk at anyone saying that I will pay you when the product is done and then after getting the product putting off payment for up to several years.
After seeing posts about Blackburn, A-Square, Big Horn, the MRC PH action, and others, it is amazing that any new, or many old companies stand a chance.
