Jeffeosso, I almost typed a message yesterday but thought that I'd wait patiently to see if you posted an update today.

So Remington says first quarter of 2006 (excuse me I had to stop typing and laugh again).

Do you think there is any value in continuing to pursue a group buy deal to try to get some of the first ones that are released?

I jsut don't know. When the new product manager is named, i'll work with them to see if we can't leverage some "first in country" things. I'll be calling once a month to find out.

when i saked for the "new date".. i said "so, i feel like being entertained, why don't you tell me the new STORY for delivery, as we all know it's a myth"

the lady laughed pretty hard

Well I saved my lunch money last month so that I could pay cash for one of these. Since it looks like it wil be a long time before I can buy one I'll just go out and buy another 223.

I found some California legal AR style lower receivers so I guess I'll build a 10 round HBar varmint gun.

Well guys, before I jumped into this, I just checked the Spartan website. They have two pictures of the rifle. One shows a rubber recoil pad and no sling swivels and the other shows sling swivels and no recoil pad, or a very thin contoured one. Rail mount for a scope on raised rib. List price is $559.00. That is considerably cheaper than the Pedersoli. Somebody out there please enlighten me about what I get with a Dago Boom for another $2000 versus this Comrade gun. I'm about 90% in for buying one of these. I've spent a lot more and got a lot less in my life. Also, think we can stoke these things up to Ruger #1 levels?

I thought this thread would fade out but now think some of the guys here really take this “special buy†seriously. It’s doubtful Remington is going to give first dibs on a hot item to a loose knit group of guys just for the calling. They have many dealers who buy a couple hundred guns a year who come first, not to mention their distributors buying hundreds of thousands per year. And that’s only if they actually make the things. I remember Bakail advertised they would make SXS rifles two or three years before hooking up with Remington and they never did. I suspect it has been more difficult to produce than they anticipated. If you really want one ASAP then go to your local dealer and put your deposit down.

Well,
thanks for the input. Perhaps you could read back on this thread and see where I was working with the product manager for the spartans at remington. In fact, the gentleman knew who we were and was more than willing to work to this end. We (PM and I) had actually worked out the distributor details, and then retailer. Thanks, and this aint my first rodeo Smiler

Please, don't mind the feedback, but the ground you brought up was actually covered.

Having money down on one means, "jack" btw.. I've had a standing order for the eaa for 2 years before remington took over production.

and no large remington distributor will take money for an advanced deposit for a spartan rifle

jumping

Do you think there would be the turmoil around these if normal procedure would have been effective?

I am expeccting a call back from the replacement PM (or interrim one) either 12/19 or 12/21.

Tell ya what... let's take a friendly wager... you place an order with your local dealer, and I'll continue on this path...

and whoever gets their's later has to give it to the guy who got it first

O.K. from my inquiry since last evening I've done some net surfing about Pedersolis and higher end rifles. Count me in for a rifle. I assume you're compiling an email list to let all us slobbering fools know when to cough up the cash. Hell if it's Spring time I'll drive to Texas, kill a pig or two and pick it up.
If you need my email I'll send confidential on this website. Thanks

Jeffe,

Maybe a solid list of names of those who are going to buy, would help swing the folks at Remington.

You might start a seperate list with those wishing to buy. Not the possibles, but solid buyers. Geez, you might even get Rem. to do something with the serial number sequence for AR members.

Good luck on your venture.

Roger, while the idea of an AR series of serial numbers is a nice idea. Lets not muddy things up. As there have been no Spartans landed here yet. I would rather have a regular ser# now, than a special # a year or more later.

Send me one Roger and I'll put any number you want on it! It might take a year or two of testing to make sure the numerals don't interfere with the function of the rifle though beer.

This thread is very amusing. It's the same story as Remington's rolling block. Even a year after it appeared in the catalog it wasn't being made .It was also intended for the custom shop with limited production !! So - my RB is made by Lone Star Rifle Co. Beautifully made ,well worth it. ....So you Spartans keep dreaming !!!

I am a friendly local dealer, as can be seen in my profile, and I take orders on Spartan rifles. I do let my customers know that it has been a long time in coming and may still take a while or may not happen at all, but a small deposit guarantees they get on my waiting list. Those people will get their gun before any hit my shelves. I am on the waiting list for Spartan SXS’s with a couple of my distributors. I’ll take the chance here in order to have the possibility of muzzling you. So I’ll take your bet and raise you this- the loser will also refrain from posting on this forum for one year. Marshall

Marshall,
You might re-read my post. i said DISTRIBUTOR. There's a dealer in michigan that will take a 100% deposit for one, non-refundable... and has for something like 3 years...

Like I said, having money down (at a dealer) means jack.

However, if you would like to put together a group buy, and I'll send you the phone numbers for the right people to talk to at rem, you certainly can step right up and drive. Your contacts and abilities in the industry certainly seem to outreach mine pitiful skills.

in fact, why don't you do that for us?

BiggestGun, I'm a friend of Jeffe's so take this with a grain of salt but I not sure I agree with dealer who, if he knows as much about Spartan doubles as you seem to, would take someone's hard earned money for such an ephemeral product. Even a small deposit.

The high road on a non-produced item IMHO, would be to have the list and contact folks for deposits if and when it becomes likely to be released.

Hello Jeffe
Sorry it’s not my intention to be making you angry. I don’t claim to be some industry ramrod, only 30 years of practical experience running a gunshop. I also don’t mean to trivialize your efforts to provide a service to ARmembers. In fact I think it’s cool you would go to all the trouble to get a special shipment. I actually hope it works and you get the first run of guns, as the readers here represent the largest group of shooters wanting this rifle.
I am simply trying to point out that Remington is a big company and demands a lot from their big buyers and those buyers won’t like a private organization stealing their thunder. In fact I haven’t read all your posts- there are simply too many to take in. Going by the opening post however it appears you hope to manipulate Remington into giving you preference over others who buy a lot of product from them. In my humble experience I don’t trust what they promise. Too many times company reps say one thing and don’t deliver.
I would consider an unlimited number of guns shipped to your distributor solely for your buy group as close enough and keep our wager. The two stipulations are that it would mean this “buy group†was satisfied before general distribution was made. The one-year “quiet†by the loser would still be in effect.
Sincerely, Marshall

Marshall,
I am not angry.. in fact, releived. I work in largish company in my real job. Talking with Product managers is part of what I do for a living.

Yep, if one calls a company rep, they hear one story... and talking to product managers, one might hear a different one. Product managers like to have marketing, and this one knew of AR, got on, read this thread, and got very excited.

You've got 30 years in the gun industry, and obviously know this far better than I do. Why don't you take the lead on this. I'll turn it right over to you. Please let us know how you progress with remington, as I am obviously a neophyte in this area. Mine will be a 45/70, please.

If you honestly believe that you can deliver a 50ish package buy,and I can't due to a varity of facts, then it's all about you.Heck, I'll even pay retail from you, if you want to take this on.

Sorry for taking exception to your post. I don't mind someone calling "bullsh!t" on me, lord knows I am full of that, but part of throwing that card is ".. then you do it"

You going to take this one, or would you like me to proceed and fail publicly, as you appear to have that opinion?

your call.
I don't accept your raise, btw... kind of silly gamesmanship to me.

I’m not trying to get into a pissing match with Jeffe and I’m sure he’s fully capable of defending himself without his buddies ganging in.
As for deposits I will explain the system that works well for me and is fair. Lots of guys want that new product right after they read about it in the glossy magazine. They might even buy one right then if it was available. Unfortunately delivery is often months and sometimes years later. Many of then will have lost interest.
I take a $20-50 deposit on new items so I know they are really interested. That deposit is refundable anytime before the product arrives. As the guns filter in then, they go out to those with deposits in order of placing them.
Remember the Ruger SXS, Ruger GTI, Bren Ten.
Take care

I try to stay out of any posts which turn into pissers and any post with more than about 3 pages is usually one. I thought trying to get together to do a group buy would be a safe thing to post on. I see now that I am sadly mistaken.

Some people just can't help themselves from being negative. I realize that it's probably a personality trait so people may not realize how negatively they come across on a post but instead of offering a positive alternative they try to make it into an ego thing by challenging the other posters.
If you disagree and think that Remington won't work with a group buy why not offer your expertise or contacts with a large distributor and see if they would be willing to do a group buy? Most distributors would probably be interested if a dealer contacts them about doing a 50 or 100 unit order.

I realize that my opinions may start more controversy, if so I apologize to everyone who reads this post trying to get information instead of trying to justify their ego.

In general I think deposits are essential to prevent the tire-kickers from bankrupting you with inventory. I just think the Spartan double rifle is such a long shot it's an exception to the rule.

I wouldn't be inclined to put my customer's hopes up that high until there were more positive indications that it is going to be a reality. As to the rest, your right, Jeffe can take care of himself.

This will be my last post on this subject as it’s getting wild so if anyone wants to contact me further you will need to email directly. Some of you think I’m being negative. I’m not. I am trying to save some of you the heartbreak of disappointment by following a pipe dream. In my opinion this gun can be had earliest by following Remington’s already in place system of getting it through your local dealer. In my opinion Remington will not sell to a special group before their big distributors and direct dealers (I’m not one of those). If I am wrong then I will be the first to applaud Jeffe’s endeavors to provide members with a great deal. If I am right then those waiting may not have their gun as soon as they might have.
After Bakial failed to deliver this gun before Remington took them on, and the long wait it’s already been I will be surprised if any are delivered by the end of 2006.
The forum is here to voice each one’s opinion. I listen to all of yours and some of them are way off base but that’s OK as it’s just a forum. This is mine. Take it or ignore it. Marshall Jones- Jones’ Fort

Marshall,
I assume from your post you won't be heading up the effort for a group buy?

There's no "heartache" in what I have proposed... no money moves ownership until the deal is sealed...

I hven't asked remington to sell to a special group BEFORE their big distributors... i have asked them to make an unsolicited sale FOR a big distributor. This is called a manf's lead.

Sorry if that wasn't clear.

Jeffe,

Now that you have apparently gained control of this effort, would you please just ask from the members, to come forward with a solid "I will buy", list. This should make Remington a little more receptive to your desires.
I will gladly put my name up second, (after you ofcourse) for the list.

Thanks for habging in there, in this endeavor.

Can I ask a question here?
I don't live in the US so I don't know your import laws but why don't you just try to get some straight from Biakal and skip Remington?
There is 1 30-06 Baikal that I have herd about in a gun shop in Canada. So I think the Baikals do exist and people are starting to import them now.
Just trying to help.

But sigh, could you please put Me on the list? I'll buy one, if I can...

I'm thinking it might be awhile before we see these.

What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.
