Colin Thank you for your response, good reasons which are difficult to argue with, I look forward to the shooting reports Regards Jonathan

I finally got out and shot it today, I put three shots through with a 300gr Goex FFg charge. My camera decided not to cooperate so I only got the first shot on video. It is shooting nice though about 6" high at 25 yards, with touching groups, so that leaves a lot of room to play with the load and file the sight in for 50 yards. What everyone really wants to see though: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JqMCETeO_BU I can shoot left handed but I am right eye dominate and prefer to do my sight work shooting right handed. That might have been a mistake though since it left it's impression on me after 3 shots and now it will be a week before I can shoot it again. This picture was taken before it started to turn purple....it looks even uglier now. Colin

I was having a bit of trouble with the CCI#35 Arsenal Primers(50 BMG primers), I wasn't getting the type of reliable ignition I wanted from them due to the angle of the firing pin and how hard the Arsenal Primers are compared to other types of primers. So I turned a couple of bushings and sleeved the primer pockets to accept 209 Shotgun Primers. Problem solved....other than now I have to turn a bunch more for all the rest of the brass my customer has already purchased. I have already spoken with S&H and the next batch of brass I order from them will come already set-up the way I want, so no problem in the future, I just have to order Minimum quantities from him. It's nice to have a supplier that is willing to work with me on this stuff. Here's the latest video of me shooting it, just a couple of shots in a row with a picture of the target this time. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HMEXxW-Se5w A little bit of final polishing and then a little bit of bluing and the rear sight(whole rifle) is finished and ready to ship, other than changing the primer pockets in the remaining pieces of brass. I'll try to remember to post a picture of the wad cutter I made to go with this in the next couple days. Colin

Nice smoke screen! good shooting with such a big boomer. What do you think of a 2 bore over under double??? 577 BME 3"500 KILL ALL 358 GREMLIN 404-375 *we band of 45-70ers* (Founder) Single Shot Shooters Society S.S.S.S. (Founder)

I think an O/U would be to tall through the action body and would make stocking it through the wrist nearly impossible to get your hands around. Not to mention mechanically difficult to build. Side by Side is the way to go if a guy wants a double 2 Bore...same overall size as this single, just twice as wide at the breechfaces and considerably heavier to pack around. Colin

Hmmmmm... Was thinking that an over under might be better than a side by side 2 bore but I am not the master gunsmith. I guess is you cant stop an elephant with one shot from a 2 bore you should take up golf. 577 BME 3"500 KILL ALL 358 GREMLIN 404-375 *we band of 45-70ers* (Founder) Single Shot Shooters Society S.S.S.S. I'm not a Master Gunsmith either, but the action on this one is 3 inches top to bottom, so take away the underelver part, add in the thickness of a barrel plus a little for bottom metal and you get 4" to 4-1/4" top to bottom. All that has to be tapered back into the tangs and through the wrist. Whereas a Side by Side doesn't get any taller, the bottom metal (water table area) doesn't hardly change at all, the breech face has to be nearly twice as wide, but that can nearly all hang over the edges of the bottom and the only real area of change is the scallops that have to cut to bring the double width of the breech face back into the top tang. Or that is how I envision it in my head anyways. Colin

I promised a picture of the wadding(wool felt wad in this case) cutter. This was pretty simple to make, the handle is removable and it has a 1/2" shank if a person wants to run it in a drill press, but it cuts easy enough just by hand. A couple twists back and forth and it goes right through 1" wool felt. I was also asked to post a picture of the case with a 209 primer in it. Colin

Just looking at the 2-bore brass and bullet, in comparison to what you plan to shoot next, is an excellent sports psychology technique, for flinch prevention. Every shooter of big bore rifles should have one of these 2-Bore hulls and a bullet. It puts things into proper perspective:

If you really want to prevent flinching, just shoot a 2 bore 30 or 40 times, every thing else is easy after that. I was thinking the other day that I have put more rounds through 2 Bores than Sir Samuel Baker reported doing in his whole career. Colin

Colin[/QUOTE Yes but have you ever killer 30 elephant in a single day? Or killed a cape buffalo at 800 yards? Well, I think he claimed those with a 4 bore lightweight anyway. My underlever 450ne is a brute to carry around so I cannot imagine a 2 bore all day. Your build has certainly been an interesting read and those cartridges should be added to everyone's collection. I've never hunted outside North America, so no, I've never killed even one Elephant or Cape Buffalo(I've shot two Bison(American Buffalo)...they get upset when you ask about shooting their Elephants at the Zoo. Colin

I'd pay money to see someone whack a Buff at 800 yards with a 4-Bore ... terminal velocity might be an issue eh ..??

Sorry. Was the best I could do in an 8 bore. I actually have one in a 20 bore. They are a hoot . . . until cleaning time.

Pictures of 8 Bore Muzzleloaders aren't exactly hard to come by, all you have to do is go to the homepage of my website, the one at the top is an 8 Bore Boxlock. I don't hav ethem on my website, but I have pictures of several more 8 Bores I've built, mostly in the classic british style with English barlocks. As for 8 Bore Underlever Cartridge rifles, I own one and have pictures of probably 20 others in both singles and doubles. Colin

Hmmmmm might need to go smokeless. Talk about a hold over. Can I add 20 lbs to the gun? I'm game. Have your travel agent send me the tickets and convince Colin to lend me the gun. Colin. Can you add scope rings for a 10-20x50 Leupold? 577 BME 3"500 KILL ALL 358 GREMLIN 404-375 *we band of 45-70ers* (Founder) Single Shot Shooters Society S.S.S.S. (Founder)
