Seems that most of the emails and phone calls I have been getting concerning this project have been coming primarily from this forum, so I thought I would post a link to the build documentation on my website. This will give anyone who is interested a quick reference that they can check up on the build as it progresses and also a place to ask me questions. I'll try to remember to post in this thread when I update the build with new progress and I will try to check this thread every day and answer any questions I can.

2 Bore Jones Underlever Project

Thanks

Colin

Right at the minute the price is $8500.00 and up for the complete rifle, but I am trying to work it out with a few members here to get the price per action/monblock and barrels down to something more affordable. A few members have contacted me wanting to know what just the action would cost, and a few have contacted me asking about a barreled action, and then a few have been interested in a whole rifle, so I am trying to work it out to were I could spread the cost out far enough to do an oversized action in aluminum, and then send it to a friend of mine who casts for me and go that route, saving a whole lot of machine time and dropping the overall cost. Right at the minute I am just building these one at a time on manual machines, so they are a pretty expensive proposition.

This same size action would actually work with a 4 bore as well, you would just need to run a faster taper on the barrel to lighten it up, not that leaving it a heavy contour in a 4 bore is a bad idea. The extra weight certainly couldn't hurt anything.

Why stop at a one bore? There are so many calibers above that one:
E Bore - 1.750"
D Bore - 1.830"
C Bore - 1.875"
B Bore - 1.938"
A Bore - 2.000" Eeker

2 Bore is as big as I can go without changing the design. To go larger I would to step the action down behind the main body before the trigger in order to keep the wrist small enough to still get your hands around it. The problem isn't just how tall these things are from top to bottom it's also the width that becomes an issue.

I actually have a half finished 8 Bore sitting in my shop right now, it's nearly an exact copy of the one I am scaling this 2 Bore off of(the first picture in my build), I started it about 2 years ago as a personal project. Much like the mechanics car, I rarely get much spare time to work on my own projects, so who knows when I will get around to finishing it.

I've always loved the underlevers, the first double rifle I ever built, I made myself a sxs .22lr in an underlever. I could always use the jobs security, and I really wouldn't mind seeing a resurrection of the Underlever rifles in any caliber.

Here is my double with jones underlever:

An 8 or 10 bore is really more than enough for most applications here on earth. A 2bore should be a cannon fitted for spaceprograms BOOM space.

its a nice Manton in 10bore...really 9bore
( .795cal) with 3.25" chambers.
I found the rife at Champlins, and swapped with some winchesters. Cases are from RMC...great stuff. I haven`t yet( bound to soon) fired the brasscases in the gun,but primarly relied on remington 10g hulls. Full charge of 10drams of swiss+ a 900 bullet does 1745Ft/sec...almost a small .600nitro. Actually a few loads did reach 1800Ft/sec. This gun says regulated for 8-10drams black powder beneath the steelbarrels.
The rifling is 1:51. All in all, this gun here is in a fantstic condition with rebounding hammers. I have just got another mold doing 960grain from NEI, A real nice flatpoint. The plan is africa. Smiler
Hey kid. There is a Tolley 8bore on Gunsinternational.com. Snap it!!.

My 8 Bore Underlever is only part way finished, it's really not a whole lot farther along than the 2 Bore. The action is mostly shaped on the 8 bore, and the barrel and monoblock are put together, but I haven't had the time to smoke the fit, so it won't even close right at the minute. Not really much to look at, but if you go to my website and click on the link in the left column of the "Finished 8 Bore", there are some nice pictures and a detailed build of the 8 Bore Boxlock I built last year for a customer.

That's probably because it isn't a 2 bore by the American definition(1.325"), it's a 4 Bore(1.052") that shoots 3500 grain bullets(British definition of bore by weight of projectile to the pound). It was made by Giles Whittome for the royal armories. The loads they were shooting weren't even a close to what that rifles is capable of. Giles says it can be loaded to 24 drams with the 3500gr slug. That would probably look a little different than 16 drams with a 2500grain slug like in the video.

I don't have a picture handy, but 24 drams is approx 656 grains or 1.5 ounces by dry volume, so if you sneak into the kitchen when the wife isn't looking and take a 1/4 cup measuring cup. Then fill it 3/4 of the way full with black powder, that's approximately 24 drams.

But hey if you are going to go to 656, you might as well make it easy and go to 700gr, that way you get a nice even 10 shots to the pound.

Colin
