Sounds like the 470 should beat the 458 by 100 fps with the longer barrel and the bigger bore diameter. You've done one hell of a job. I like the 416 to maybe rechamber my Taylor. I'm thinking a 350 Swift at 2650 fps.
Take the best of care and Happy New Year

Hey now! That is a great way to start the new year. Which .470 barrel did you use and do you plan to leave it at 26 inches?
I am very excited about the whole development and very happy to own one of the early versions.
Would it help you any if I sent you some UM Brass?
Anything else you might need to continue on?
Party hard and be safe,

Happy new Years all!

BS,
What HK said... it was just born!! heh, and
quote:
we'll do some load dev perhaps next weekend
LOL

can't imagine not sharing it with HK... and the Bubbas!!

I won't start the 30's until the 40's are pretty well done and understood. Reason being is I don't want to be distracted from the 40s.

Dave,
Thanks.. I think tops loads will close in on 2400, with the 26". Since this is Frank's gun, and he was nice enough to let me to this quick load dev, we'll have to wait till I build another 416 for me.

Snowwolf,
I am certain that I can get the 3rd one down on the ruger 77. there's nearly 3/16 or better, of dead space on the floorplate/follwer contact point, but I need to do some head scratching on that before I start whittling! I THINK the 70 will take 3, as it will take (with various boxes) 3 down with the 338 win or with the wsm rounds.

Chris,
Out with a BANG ... and in with a 470 ... You know Dave's Mbogo started all this ... I won't tell Jana, so she won't beat him with a bar of soap in a sock!!

Frank,
Tried calling your cell a couple times.. right to VM on friday. I used the pacnor 1x18 twist .. but I don't remember if it's a 4 or a 5 ... it's rather light (7# 11.5oz)!!
I'll leave it at 26 for now, as I wanted to see the max barrel length *I* would use in a hunting rifle and how it performs. Anyone want a 24?
I am good on Brass, and I'll be handing you some cases in Dallas! and I did party safe

366,
Yeppers, excellent way to finish/start the new year... 2005 - Finished the first AR guns. 2006 - Load dev and field reports!!

Happy New Year and Many thinks

Thanks Jeffe, We have been without electricity where my cell phone originates due to some winter storms so my cell was offline. I will try and call you in a little bit. I may take you up on that 24 inch or even the 26 which along with my 416 would be a switch barrel system of sorts for me.

Jeffe,

Good job, I want to see the shoulder on the 470, as I may just build one for grins, not that I need an other big bore, but have nothing in 470.

I have some ultra mag cases and will be back home tomorrow and will rubber band some together and post what I think the dia should be, want opinion. I think I posted the dia of a box I have that I think was an Sunny-hill box for an ultra mag, but its real long. I want to get my ducks in a row and build on a VZ that will hold 4 down.

Again, very good job and thanks for you time and thanks to Hog Killer also.

Lets also try to get a conf call to Jamison next week if it makes sense on the basic brass.

Call me tomorrow eve if you can.

.458 AR

Bent Fossdal,

When jeffeosso post about making a wildcat cartridge up, he is not "joking around about it". (Unlike some moon) It's going to happen, if at all possible. He has 5 wildcats to his credit in '05. I think '06 may see some more jeffe wildcats. thumb

Any plans for a 7mm AR? I noted you want to finish the 40's before moving on to other projects.

And I don't remember whose it is, but someone has the tag, "The AR series of cartridges...ridding the world of 7mm Rem Mags one at a time"

I'm interested! Big Grin

Friar,
since the 7rem is already over bore, and there's the 7 weatherby mag (yes, there is.. just never caught on) the overlap would be small.. besides, even the 7 wsm is overbore..

I am thinking to finish the 40s, and start looking at the 30s.. BUT .. we start getting into overbore/non-advantageous in normal barrel length. I mean, it's hard to get a seat on the "308 mag" train...

for example, the 30-378, 300 RUM, 300Weatherby, 300 winmag, 308 norma/30/338, 300 wsm, and 300 HH .. all "right there, go buy it" rounds..

311 imperial (precursor to the RUM rounds) covers the 303

8remmag/325 WSM - just about nails the 8mag space ... but there's room

338 - from 338-08-338/378 ... it's ocovered, but there is NO wsm here...

348 - NO

9mm (it would actually be .358, not .356) .. interesting

9,3 .. here would be a neat space

375 - would be a 375 weatherby in a standard action...

Jeff,

Awesome! I was out of the office for the week and just got your message, and caught this thread.

As to the 7mm rem mag solution I refer to in my sig line, it is not a bigger chamber I'm after, it's a new barrel with a 40 bore Big Grin

358 AR would be cool, I'm a 35 nut and can see the use of something with a we bit more fuel than a 358 Norma, say 270's @ 2700.
