Do you start with a .375 H&H or something else?
Thanks,

If it can take a h&h you can make it a 404. You need a magnum length action. A p14 or m1917 would make a good start for a 404.

Lucky you and good taste. Pics?
A vintage action would be good for a vintage cart.
An ultra mag action might be the easiest conversion.

Mine is built by Jack Haugh on a 1935 Brazilian Mauser Banner standard military action, & stocked by Sterling Davenport. A beautiful classic rifle that feeds great. It does just hold three down though, but that could be changed with a Weibe or Blackburn deep box bottom metal.

The question should be whether you want a controlled feed or a push feed and how many coins do you have in your pocket.

Lots of actions available for both.

What are you hunting?

Why the 404 Jeff specifically? I think it's an excellent cartridge but in this day and age there are many excellent cartridges out there much easier to obtain cases for, with the same or better ballistics...

Not to mention the dearth of bullet selections.(arguably)

It has it's nostalgia benefits certainly...not many can say they have a 404 Jeffery in their rack...which is reason enough to have one.

Great looking rifle.
New barrel and looks super.
How is a scope mounted on it? The "top" looks different than what I am used to looking at.

Mine is a LH CZ 550 Mag action. Work fine. There probably more practical cartridges in the modern times. However, the .404 has stood the test of time and still does the job.

Make no mistake. You can load the 404 Jeffery up to where it can kill on both ends of the rifle! In my custom made MRC Long Action rifle at 10.5 pounds it's fun. In my lighter M 03 Mauser, it gets your attention rather quickly!

One of the great things about the 404 is that it does not require a magnum length action. A standard length pre-war 98 Mauser is the only action I would consider.

dogcat, no scope on it, was never drilled. That's bascially the reason I'm selling it; iron sights are not for me at my advanced age and I'm not gonna be the guy to drill holes in a WR/Mauser. And I need the money for Mr. Syncerus Caffer next year!

All sorts of good suggestions here.

I will just say that mine is built on a VZ24 and works flawlessly.

IMHO, any CRF with a 3.6" box will work fine.

That's a nice example of an opened up M98 phil. As a matter of interest how much metal has been removed from the front ramp/lower locking lug recess to fit the 404?

Like to compare with my own M98 in 404.

I hear the M70 in a RUM chambering makes for a very easy conversion based upon the similar size of the RUM and the Jeffery casing.

Allen, This rifle of mine was one of the very first 404's that Jeffery built and they built on a standard commercial 1905 action. The 404 was the first large bore designed for bolt rifles and Jeffery was experimenting and piecing out work to many smaller shops in the area.
It was obviously designed as a working rifle and proofed for the same 400 gr bullet and 60 gr cordite as the 450/400. Even with the steel butt the recoil is not bad and no worse than a 375 of the same weight ( 8 1/2 lb)
