Phil, it definately looks like a working rifle and I have no doubt you use it as such. My 404 is built with a full length magnum Vector action. ALLEN W. To deviate slightly from the original question: James Kobe just shipped my OM 70 standard action that had been opened up to 375 length. He fit that infamous 450/375 Ultra Magnum barrel and tuned it a bit. With 500gr RNS Hornady bullets, those rounds are nearly 3.6" long. My VZ-24 in 404J, the loaded rounds are 3.530" oal. Does this not rather complicate building one on anything with a shorter box, or are you changing the box length? I ask because I am sitting here and I have a treasure (to me), a NIB Mark X Commercial Action. It is the Model "D" with both Whitworth and Interarms addresses, and the Whitworth logo in the oval on the action top, drilled and tapped for bases, and the rear sight on the right rear side. Adjustable trigger too. I had figured out this was what was needed to do a 404J length cartridge. Rich

Beautiful!! Phil Shoemaker : "I went to a .30-06 on a fine old Mauser action. That worked successfully for a few years until a wounded, vindictive brown bear taught me that precise bullet placement is not always possible in thick alders, at spitting distances and when time is measured in split seconds. Lucky to come out of that lesson alive, I decided to look for a more suitable rifle."

Here is another view of the original Jeffery 404. Notice the steel plate at the front of the magazine box that has been inlet into the stock And the rather unique way they modified the standard size Mauser magazine box to fit the 404. And even though there are no additional cross bolts and the rifle obviously has been used, the stock is still solid and without splits. Anyone who claims the 30-06 is ineffective has either not tried one, or is unwittingly commenting on their own marksmanship Phil Shoemaker Alaska Master guide FAA Master pilot NRA Benefactor www.grizzlyskinsofalaska.com

A hybrid of a blind magazine and a magazine. Quite a marvel and quite a find as well. Thanks for the interesting post. CB

Jeffery, Wesley Richards and Rigby built them on standard 98 actions..and they work like a charm. PH Paul Zorn has a WR in .404 that I have lusted for over the years, but today I would prefer the same in a 275!! I prefer a magnum mauser action, as it has a bit more room and its easier to make them feed, and you can seat bullet out a bit more, but I would chose the guns made by Jefferys or Rigby over any other 404. They just built nice rifles that warm this old nostalgic heart. Ray Atkinson Atkinson Hunting Adventures 10 Ward Lane, Filer, Idaho, 83328 208-731-4120 rayatkinsonhunting@gmail.com
