Cazador, I had one shoulder mount on the first and the biggest a 45 incher. Three are cleaned sculls and the last two I left in Zimbabwe. I can get roundtrip airfare for the price of shipping two sculls home.

Being only a so called 'wannabe' I've shot only one cape buffalo in Zimbabwe 2002. Hunted them on three concessions but only the one trophy so far. Used a .375 H&H. Shot approx 17 water buffalo in Australia. 3 bulls with a .450 No2 NE and 14 (approx) with a 9.3x74R double. My keyboard is yet un-blooded ......

1 trip, Selous Game Reserve, 3 cape buff. 2 from herds, 1 daggaboy (not sure why that matters here). All with a 470 Mbogo. None of them required more than one shot, but the last buff got an extra one while humping off slowly to die from the first shot. If water buffalo count, then I don't see why bison wouldn't...I've killed about a dozen of those, with crossbows, a 220 Swift , 6.5 Gibbs, 300 Win Mag and 375 H&H mag. Cheers, Canuck

To be honest Will doesn't intimidate me. His comments just make my blood pressure rise from time to time. But I've been told that he tends to have that effect on more people than just I. Next time I have a worthy story I'll be sure and give ole AR one more shot. Or maybe not. To many keyboard experts, Monday morning quarterbacks and trolls around here for my tastes. I've killed more than one herd buff and dagga boys. But I am not highly experienced like some here.

Like I said, take it with a grain of salt, and post your hunts. The vast majority of us would all like to hear about them and see your pics.

Just remember that for every one jackass that makes disparaging remarks, etc, there are 50 or even 100 that enjoy the stories. Its just too bad they don't speak up more often, but you should keep it in mind. Cheers, Canuck

Gentlemen, Don't forget this is the INTERNET. Home of the INSTANT expert. It is the only place where a looser, with no real life, can make himself into the most remarkable, and astute hunter. Mind you, it does not take very long before those with real hunting experince suss him out.

Surestrike- Do take it with a grain of salt. Will is one of those engineer types. My dad was a physicist, and my two brothers are engineers. I am the only male member of my clan to have escaped a life of wearing plaids with stripes. I was eliminated from the field when, at an early age, I recoiled at wearing white socks with dark shoes or sandals, dismissed the practice of pulling the waistline of my pants up to my chest, and could engage in a conversation with others without making their eyes roll back into their heads. "Flowery" has a different meaning to those in such chosen fields than it does to the rest of the general population. Ingredient labels on food are "flowery" (nary a differential equation in the text"). And DVD Instructions - well that is pornography! Such comments from the pocket protector crowd should be taken accordingly! SCI Life Member DSC Life Member

Well then, if water buff and bison count...how about the neighbor's ornery Holstein herd bull? No? OK. Put me in the 'bluff' category. But you wouldn't believe how outright dangerous he was!

I have never been to Africa and I don't know I ever will be able to but-we once were prepared to butcher a 2 1/2 year old Hereford steer. My brother had a 38 Special revolver and thought he was Clint Eastwood-he would do the shooting. The first shot had no effect and things turned into a melee. We had a merry time in the pasture. While my brother pummped five more ineffective rounds into the beasts noggin I ran to my car where I had a .45 caliber muzzleloader. Very quickly I poured powder and seated a ball, then jumped back over the fence. My brother was now out of ammo and was dodging the steer. The steer saw me and actually came straight ahead. When the sights were just right on the "X" I touched the trigger and he fell. I don't know what the range was but the black powder burned the hair on his forehead. For a second or two I thought I was Capstick. YOu guys will never know how much I envy you. Would one of you adopt me or something?

Touche! Smartarse! I have not posted the FULL report, but I have posted pictures and some stories. Everyone knows that I went as I annoyed everyone with all my planning, photos of rifles, ammo, load development, etc, etc, etc (ad nauseum for some I am sure!). I haven't ever heard Mac mention any plans for trips, or any "I am back from my trip to.." type posts. I don't doubt his experience or anything, its just that based on his comment above I think the bugger is holding out on us!!! Not FAIR! Time to share. Cheers, Canuck ps: Mac...just meant in good fun and genuine curiousity, btw. I am NOT trying to pull an "anti-Atkinson" style inquisition here. In fact that never occured to me (until I got a PM from someone that was curious).

Every year from 1992 and never a peep about any of the hunts? I get the impression some don't believe him. Why is this surprising? Not everyone who posts here does it to brag and get attaboys from other posters. Sharing knowledge is one thing but bragging is another. I would think that many members have taken many hunts they don't post about or brag on. If Mac doesn't want to report on all his hunts than that is his choice. More than any poster has stated to date on this thread (with the possible exception of MacD37), but that still doesn't make me an "expert" just more experienced I suppose.

Since when is sharing stories of a recently completed hunt or the anticipation of the next hunt, etc, all about bragging and getting attaboys???? What I enjoy most about this site is the comraderie of like minded people and the sharing of experience and experiences. Period. It has nothing to do bragging IMHO. Nobody has to share anything if they don't want to. But I took an opportunity to give Mac (who I like and respect based on about 7 years of his posting here) a bit of ribbing. I didn't see any harm in that when I posted my initial comment, but clearly I see I should have done it offline (ie. by PM). Cheers, Canuck

When you cut through some of the occasionally aggravating posts, this forum is a learning experience for me. I've picked up all kinds of valuable information that may prove to be useful later on down the road. Storytelling is a useful talent and a Southern (US) tradition. A good yarn spinner sure does liven the place up a bit.

UH-HUH. Still, considering the number of posts, the authoritative nature of most, it would seem that with 15 - 30 buff in the last 15 years, we would have heard something or at least seen a picture. Huh - I must have been absent that day. Surestrike - Will is absolutely nothing to worry about. Post whatever you like, whenever you like. Most of us will enjoy it. It is interesting to see how it is translated that hunting on a safari X number of buffalo somehow makes the client a better hunter or more experienced. True to some extent. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy an African safari as much as the next person and hope for many more. But when the trackers do the tracking, the PH does the strategy, the cooks do the cooking, the driver does the driving, the skinners do the skinning and caping, the butchers butcher the animal, what's the client doing? Pulling a trigger??? Sometimes the PH even needs to do that too, or at least back-up the client. I imagine that there are some "experts" on forums that have never tracked an animal themselves, hunted and shot an animal without the assistance of a PH, never got their hands bloody gutting and skinning a beast themselves. Without a retinue an African outfitter provides to do practically everything for the client. One thing we have in the USA, Australia, Europe, is still being able to hunt for and by oneself, and doing the lot. True experience in my opinion. Tallies sometimes mean little.
