Taking a (muted) suggestion from Mike Jines on another thread, I have decided to start a thread on favorite beverages whilst on safari

Mine is simple.
I like Bombay Gin with Schweppes Tonic Water and Schweppes Lemonade mixed in equal proportions with a few ice cubes. A couple or three a night is sufficient. In addition the quinine is supposed to help keep off the sqeeters or at least that's what the Brits used for a malaria remedy. I concur it works, as I have never caught malaria that I know of. I've had Peter order up a few bottles of Bombay for May.
After a long hot day, an immediate beer is called for. Hopefully there is one or two in the truck on the ride back to camp.
After the occasion to shoot something substantial, the PH's I have been with have been able to find a small amount of Scotch or Whisky for a quick congratulatory shot. Its a good touch and gets the PH a couple extra dollars in the tipping department
On occasion, I like a local pilsner beer for lunch - just one mind you. A beer for lunch replaces a lot of carbohydrates that you loose during those long walks. I found that out in New Zealand (Kiwi's)where the guide had me drink a beer at lunch everyday while climbing those fawking mountains. Its amazing the energy you pick up with lunch and a beer. Two beers, its amazing how less energetic you feel.

Anyway, this whole topic is Jine's idea. The bastard keeps coming up with topics to discuss. Chime in if you want

With Walter in the camp, I prefer to be sober.

Finally an interesting topic. I follow the drinking routine prescribed by Mark Sullivan on his DVD Death by Drambuie. No one can handle a tall boy glass like Mark.

My preferred drink is likewise a gin and tonic. Since I hunt with Buzz I am relegated to drinking Gordon's gin but it will suffice. It is a quantity over quality sort of thing. I like a little Rose's lime juice in my G&T along with a squeeze of lime. Three or four seems to help ease the muscle aches and pains from the day (two if Rich Tabor is mixing the drinks, he does not realize apparently that the T in G&T stands for tonic water, he makes G&G's). I also enjoy a nice cold beer or two in the late afternoon when you have walked back to the Cruiser and the hunting is over. I great way to unwind on the drive back to camp.

Ice tea or cold tea. No alcohol here.

yes, a true "British" Gin and Tonic is a glass 7/8 full of gin with a couple ice cubes and you "gallantly wave" the tonic over the top of the glass. It comes after the first two or three regular G&T's

Oh, and before I forget, take him a Mexican Sombrero and get your hat back next time you head over to Zim. I know from first hand he is in love with the Mexican culture and would truly enjoy a sombrero

When I hunt with Jan Du Plessis in Namibia, my preference is for Tafel beer. If we've had a productive hunt that day, we'll also toast with a single shot of Jaegaermeister. My max tolerance is 2 or 3 Tafels and I'm ready to hit the sack and do it all again the next morning. Fond memories of a cold beer with a nice Montecristo and a warm mopane fire to sit around with Jan and his wife Mariesje

I found the beer in Namibia to be some of the best I have ever had. Windhoek Lager is good stuff. I am going back to Namib some day just for the beer.

Saeed: Just get Walter drunk and passed out first - then you can enjoy a couple libations and pull some cool pranks at the same time

when I was a guide we had a party once - with some mustard involved... but that's a long story and I am not sure I would want to put it on the WWW

Or what ever Scotch is avialable, when the Laphroaig runs out.

For some unknown reason, I drink a lot less these days than in the past. Getting old and soft I suppose.

But when the occasion arises, I still prefer a nice single malt with a touch of water to open the flavor. Preferably Lagavulin, with Talisker being a strong second. Oban on occasion even.

Yea, I know, fine single malt Scotch is an acquired taste ... much in the same manner as splinter fore-ends on double rifles.

Reminds of the time when I got appointed barman, with no instructions what to do.

We had an enormous glass bowl, and I thought I will make a mixed drink in it with fruits floating on top.

We chopped some oranges, apples and some grapes.

I then added equal amounts of whisky, gin and vodka, with some fruit juice.

As the level of the liquid in the bowl get lower, I just added a bottle each of the aforementioned drinks.

We were supposed to go fishing early the next morning.

Sadly, I was the only person awake!

Quinine was indeed used to treat malaria , however when considering the tiny amount of quinine consumed in a Double G&T , one would die of cirrhosis of the liver first before the quinine could take effect.

I think the most unusual drink combination I've seen had while on a hunt was Scotch and Tonic , this was also said to have medicinal properties...

I prefer cold beer.....Namibian beer is very taseful..

Gin & tonic is a must, me likes Dry Gordon..

Whisky does not taste me in the tropics, calvados/cognac is nice with the coffee though..

I'm with Bud Meadows on this one, cold beers & a shot (or two, maybe three) of Jaegermeister.

Or maybe a little Jack Daniels.

I don't drink the hard stuff anymore. So for me a castle beer to go with dinner and another by the fire will do me just fine!
You can replace castle with Windhoek lager if need be. I find both to be excellent. Hmm im a little thirsty.

I'm fond of red wine. A South African Pinotage, one glass before dinner and one during, is about right for me.

I can't handle more alcohol that that if I want to answer the bell the next day.

I like to lean on the hood and drink a beer just at sunset or on the ride back to camp.

Wine with dinner.

A safari is never complete without a G&T so I usually save that for a sit around a very low burning fire.

I will be hunting with Rich Tabor in July so if he is mixing the drinks I will heed your warning about his ratio of
G to T Mike.

A cold beer after a long hot walk is great. G&T in the evening but it has to be Gordon's and ideally Schweppes tonic water.

Bombay Sapphire doesn't really taste like gin IMO

Ahhh, good topic for a thirsty Aussie. Beer, red wine, scotch, Jacks, as long as it's cold. Or cognac.

Best refreshment night last year was day 9/10, got 2nd buff on last light after a very long hard walk. The hour back to camp in the Cruiser was very enjoyable reliving the day over 5 Bollingers and a H Upman Magnum 50. Back at camp a few nice whiskeys and a relaxing diesel hunt early the last day.

Even though I have given up stogies for the 437th time, I would still not sit around a camp fire in Africa without at least one with a nice drink after bagging my main animal. Very enjoyable.

We always take a few nice bottles to share around with the PH's.

I like a drink as much as anyone but NEVER while hunting not even 1. If I drink I'm done hunting for the day. I insist on the same from those I am hunting with. When the guns are put away for the day I'm down for a few scotch n waters. 163bc

Dan, given the company you run with a few nice bottles will last until day three of the safari!

Beer on the truck for the ride home. Bourbon after the shower, red wine with the meal.

I did drink some chubuku (sp?) one night and regretted it severely the next day.

Only drink Brandy and coke and beer on safari!!Klipdrift and black label/Hansa beer

Back in the day, a Zim PH who posts here now and again used to keep a flask of Mampoer in his Cruiser's glove box.

Exception?: After my first kill, my PH produced a flask, offered me a swig and gave me a hearty slap-on-the-back along with a much remembered "Well done!" ... great, great moment!

+1 on cold beer.

All in moderation though.

When I was in Uganda...they had a local tonic water I found very pleasing to the taste.

I like either a G&T or 3 (max) or a good local beer or 3 (max).

I like ALL beers so want to try what ever is around that I may have never had before.

While I do buy Schweppes at home...if they have a local tonic...I like to try that. Personally...I like V&T's better. At home...Ketel one and Schweppes...sometimes plain...sometimes lime...sometimes mostly Ketel one.

It is ALWAYS nice to have that cold beer for the ride back to camp.

My philosophy is that I go to experience Africa...I don't try to make Africa like home.

I will usually have a glass of wine (red) with dinner and one beer per trip.

A few cold, or most often, cool beers on the ride back to camp then Bourbon around the fire in the evening, Crown or Bookers.

All three seem to taste better in Africa.

THat is pretty me as well. Any more than that I go to sleep in the trackers quarters....

Have never been able to like anything with gin in it...though I've definitely tried!
A couple of beers while talking around the fire are great. Also, scotch or bourbon; again one or two only. Wine at dinner and I've had enough.
There have been times though when a diet coke was sufficient.
