I received my Lion recently from Life-form Taxidermy. About 15 months from the time I left it until I received it. Delay was waiting for some minor plains game to arrive and get the export permits issued. Otherwise I would have had it much sooner. Not a problem. Huge crate over 9 feet long. Very well crated. I shipped Ocean Cargo and it still cost me nearly $2,800. Work was outstanding. They did a great job on the base and an unbelievable job on repairing a large silver dollar size exit hole in his right upper mandible. One of my parting shots took him behind the left shoulder, penetrating the lower skull, breaking the lower right mandible and deflecting upward and exiting the whisker area of his upper jowl. I was shocked when I saw the size of the hole, but I am here to tell you all they patched it so well, you cannot see any sign of it. I'm a big fan of US Taxidermy as I spent 17 years in the profession, but I give high marks to Life-form on all aspects of dealing with them and their finished product. Kudo's to Cecil, Jerry and Sharon. Sharon was an absolute pleasure to work with. She never failed to reply to any questions, requests or information. They are definately big cat professionals.
Regards,
David

I saw that Lion in the packing department a few weeks ago, and as is usual with Lifeform's work, it's stunning. - In fact, the picture doesn't really do it justice.

Dave,

I've long ago decided that I never ever want anything to do with any lion hunt. The reason is a long story, but I've stuck to my decision so far. But looking at yours makes me want to seriously reconsider that decision! What a beautiful specimen! That is what a lion should look like!

Congratulations!

In good hunting.

Thanks for the compliments everyone, Life-form is due it all. I took some pics when we unpacked the crate but I haven't uploaded them yet. Due to the logistics getting my recent Leopard from Zim to Mpumalanga, RSA, I'm shipping it home, then onto the tannery, then The Artistry of Wildlife. Dennis does excellent cat work. The hunt report was posted last June with the details. As a side note: I was specific with my desires and all were met to the letter. I did run my hands through his mane once in my home as it wasn't laid back when I shot him. It isn't now either.

Was this a "canned" lion hunt? From the looks of the mane, and the fact it was shot in RSA, I think it might have been.

A lot of people object to that. I'm not sure I do. Any other type of lion hunt is getting prohibitively expensive and, as was pointed out in the hunting rerport, the lion was stalked on its own ground with the possibility of chewing up the hunter.

Bwana Binduki,

That's what I said. That's one reason I thought it might be a "canned hunt." I didn't know there was any free ranging wild lion hunting in RSA.

Lion hunting in RSA
kind of like Milk in China. I am not sitting in judgement of you or anyone else that hunts Lion in RSA, but it is the capital of canned lion hunting
You almost never see a lion with that kind of mane in the wild or at least I don't.
Still a pretty cat bewildered

tradewinds,

I know nothing about where L. David shot his lion or the circumstances of that hunt but I do know there are wild lions in the unfenced areas bordering Kruger. The areas run into the 100's of thousands of acres so it would be difficult to imagine you are not hunting wild lions. Mane quality tends to be excellent with the lions running very old. In the Timbavati bordering Kruger the hunt is all a tracking affair with a high frustration level as the criterion for a shootable lion tends to be difficult to fill. You maybe on lions everyday but not see the perfect one for harvest even after many days of tracking and looking over several monster males.
