Here a couple of things I thought AR members might enjoy - a map of Botswana from 1965, marked up with the areas hunted, and a list of the trophys that my Grandfather send back to his taxidermist. Not sure why I was not aware of this, but I had no idea Botswana offered Roan at one time. When was Roan removed from the "Huntable" species list there? I also wish I had been able to hunt Botswana when Sable and Sitatunga were still allowed. Thanks for posting the map and list.

Brant, those are terrific keepsakes. I can't help but be amazed when I read the bottom lines on those tally sheets! Your first image didn't translate. Here it is: Would you be so kind as to post an image from the map showing the Caprivi Strip and eastern Bechuanaland up to the Rhodesian border? Thanks. MR - I tried to stitch the scans together in Photoshop, but my skills are pretty limited in that program. Here is the whole map. It is really only of Bechuanaland, with limited coverage of the borders. Brant

It sure sounds like they had a great time - it was my father and grandfather on the trip with Mr. Selby. I posted a lot of pictures from that trip on AR last summer - just search for something like: Botswana Safari with Harry Selby - 1965 Brant

Thanks Charles, it's been a while since I've posted anything here - I was just glad to get the pics posted... I recently scanned my father's journal from the trip, and will be incorporating that into a photo book for him.

Thanks, Brant. If I may presume to suggest it, I think that you and your dad need to go back. Mike Wilderness is my cathedral, and hunting is my prayer.

Thanks MR. We do a lot of hunting together, but mostly for birds. He's been managing his marsh for waterfowl for the past 38 years, and we've been fortunate enough to travel quite a bit chasing birds. I will go to Africa at some point, although it surely won't be the same as when they went to Botswana (3 weeks, full bag with Harry Selby). As it is for everyone, it's a challenge to balance spending time with my immediate family and making hunting trips with my father. Whenever he wants to go on a hunting trip, it's hard to say no. I've had a ton of fun putting together the photo book from that trip. Since I wasn't born then, it's as close as I can come to being there. Mr. Selby and I have exchanged a few emails about the trip, and he enjoyed the photos and the comments from the posts on AR last summer. The reaction from AR members to the pictures has been great. Had to re-visit this post again; that's why they call it "the good old days." Thanks again Brant, and welcome to our fire Mr. Selby. Being a navigator, I truly love maps. Old ones, particularly. I have the Michelen maps of that area, but that one is really fascinating. What a great time to have been in Africa and with Selby to boot. Couldn't ask for more than that.

Good for you and your dad, Brant. I know that it's hard to find the time. I am going to do a month on safari this summer, in Namibia, with my son, who just graduated college. Vaughan Fulton will be our PH. He is a great guy - in the Harry Selby mould if ever there was one - his own man and a terrific hunter and human being. I'm no preacher, but I will say that life offers few opportunities of the kind that your dad and grandfather were able to share. Too soon, they are gone and will never come back. I have learned, after much pre-occupation with managing to get to where I can, to grab those opportunities and hang on with both hands. Your photos posted here and on previous threads are wonderful. They helped to inspire me to make this safari with my own son, before time takes its inevitable toll. Thanks again. Mike Wilderness is my cathedral, and hunting is my prayer.
