Botswana safari with Harry Selby - more pictures and info

Here are a few more pictures from my father and grandfather's safari in 1965 with Harry Selby. I hope you enjoy them as much as I have. I thought the one of my father drawing a bead on an elephant was a great photo (he didn't shoot it). Mr. Selby told him more than once not to shoot the bull - my father was 18 at the time, and he wanted to be sure he didn't get too excited and pull the trigger. It would have been a heck of a bull, but had a broken tusk...

I've had the distinct pleasure of exchanging a few emails with Mr. Selby as a result of these pictures, and thought I'd share with some additional information about the hunts that he conducted at that time:

He made mention of the following (hopefully I have the details correct):

When he started the Ker Downey & Selby operation in Botswana, they decided on an 'all-in' safari charge. The quote included the hunt for the number of hunters on the safari and the duration. It included the 'Package Game License" which included 1 elephant, 1 lion, 1 leopard, 4 buffalo, 3 kudu, 1 sable, 1 sitatunga, 1 roan, 1 waterbuck, 1 gemsbok and a generous number of other plains game.

Extra animals could be purchased for some species, however no extra sable. There were no trophy fees and no concession fees, all drinks and gratuities except for the professional hunter were also included (it was not uncommon in those days to not tip the hunter). The only extra for the client's account were any purchases made on the safari, such as curios, or any charter aircraft fees. The system worked very well, and clients were happy to know exactly what the safari would cost before its commencement.

They were eventually forced to abandon this method of 'safari charge' due to their competitors comparing their prices to KD&S's and neglecting to mention that their quote would include a whopping after safari's end bill...this generally worked out to be more expensive than their safari quote system would have been.

Given that this was prior to SCI/DSC, hunters were not able to compare prices as easily, and their quote appeared to be much higher than that of their competitors.

I am not sure if someone could conduct a safari of this type in Botswana today - I can only imagine the cost.

Too cool. I'm thinking leather jacket on the next trip!

Some things never change, like Coke, Fanta, and stringing the wires for the radio. Except I guess there are satelite phones these days too.

Although Will may be right (and isn't he usually?) about some things never changing, when I see these wonderful pictures I am put in mind of the title of Peter Byrne's book Gone are the Days.

Many thanks for posting these.

Strange to think that twenty or thirty years from now (or sooner?) people will look back on how inexpensive and easily available hunts were for us.

The buffalo pic is a fantastic shot of your dad and the buff, but also, the fact that selby is in the background. I wonder if it was planned that way, or just happened by accident

More great photos. Thanks for sharing these.

I love the old bull buff your dad shot, and the sable your grandfather shot is remarkable too. Super warthog, waterbuck, etc. too! They must have had a terrific time of it on that safari.

And that Weatherby they were sharing has some very pretty wood on it.

The slides seem to have held up very well over the years.

Thanks again.

I'm headed there as soon as I can, Adam. Line me up a buff and a banteng and throw in a minty 'Rover to top her off... man that's heaven!

Russ, Barry Jones of www.buffalosafaris.com would be a good option on the Buff, Bantang and Boar and im sure we could find a classic Landy to send to Texas at a resonable price. Smiler

What a wonderful time to have been in Africa. Thanks for the photos.

I have a custom 25-06 that is a twin of the rifle shown in the picture of your grandfather. An absolute twin. It was built in the late 60's or early 70's by a guy in Miami.

Those were the days. Thank you for sharing the photos.

I know someone who hunted in Botswana in 1969 or 1970, his was a 28 day safari for the big 4 and it cost him under ten thousand dollars including travel and trophy fees.

Aziz,

Glad you enjoyed the pictures. The safari in 1965 cost about $12,000 for two people, 21 days, full bag. A good chunk of change back then, but I can't really guess what it would be now.

LDK,

I am trying to figure out what to do with them. I've started to put together a photo book of this safari for my father. I think I will try to do one for each of their "major" trips, and maybe a compilation of trips from the western U.S. and Alaska. Fortunately, getting them printed by the web-based publishers these days makes it much easier.

There are dozens of magazine articles written by Erwin Bauer covering many of these trips - they will get archived as well - kind of like The Nick Kudu files here on AR.
