Hmmmm... I've never been to an SCI convention but the combination of a hunting show and a general brawl is a spectacle that's getting harder to resist. Can we agree on a central locale for the action? Michael Buffer as ring announcer? Title belt can be one of those fancy leather ones with loops for .577 cartridges. Prize can be Boddingtons one and only .308? Wadda ya say chaps? JCHB

I have never met the man, but have had a few messages exchanged with him. He has always came over as a gentleman. I have read his books, and have seen some of his videos. I have enjoyed all of these. I am very sad to hear of his troubles, some involving people I have met through these forums. I hope all gets worked out, without anyone getting unduly affected. Sadly, once the lawyers get involved, everyone gets hurt, and only the lawyers get the money.

I've (literally) bumped into CB 2 or 3 times just in passing & have over the years communicated a fair bit with him & he's always been an absolute gentleman. If he's having problems then I'm very sorry to hear it & I see no reason whatsoever why people should be even discussing it here..... if nothing else, because those problems are his personal business & bugger all to do with African hunting so if nothing else, it's bad form & bloody bad manners. I'd be more than happy to share a campfire & a bottle with him anytime, no matter what his personal circumstances.

I know a bit about bankruptcy by virtue of dating a big time bankruptcy lawyer for several years and what I do for a living (CPA). Before joining the firm she is at now, she was the law clerk for the lead bankruptcy judge in this district. Let me make some general comments about bankruptcy as follows: 1- There are 2 forms of bankruptcy available to individuals. These are chapter 7 & chapter 13. Chapter 7 is total liquidation. Chapter 13 is reorganization where debts are restructured to be paid out over a period of time. CB's filings are chapter 7, total liquidation. 2- According to my ex, the most common reason for a BK filing is catastrophic medical expenses. I have seen the filing. Medical expenses are not the issue. I guess that is a little bit of good news. 3- Someone suggested recouping by writing the bad debts off their taxes. Let me refer to individuals only for purposes of these comments. Under this scenario, the MOST anyone could recover is $.396 on the dollar. Still a massive loss. Further, if the loan was a non business bad debt, it would be a deductible as a short term capital loss. Unless there are other capital gains, the maximum deduction is $3,000 per year. Thus Jones gets to deducts his loss over the next 50 years. 4- It doesn't matter how insignificant an asset it. It still has to be declared. Failure to do so is a serious issue. A REAL serious issue. Whether one wants to call him this or not, CB is a celebrity/public figure. When one chooses this type of career whether it be singer, actor, writer, politician, etc, they inherently accept the fact that their life/ actions are open to public scrutiny. That is the reality like it or not. One can't have the positives without accepting the negatives. Public scrutiny of something such as a bankruptcy filing or a divorce is certainly a negative. While the idea of a very public figure filing a chapter 7 and having it discussed publicly is difficult for some, I don't see AAZ as trying to kick a man while he is down. He is expressing his opinion which is what most do here every day. Before you all bash him for doing what others here do every day (express his opinion), perhaps you should read the filing and ask yourself some very basic questions about it. I would hate to be CB's age going through a BK. For that matter, I would hate to go through it at any age. Best of luck to him. Carry on gentlemen. I am going deer hunting!

Does the chapter 7 filing mean: 1- CB is not a good writer? NO! 2- CB is not a good hunter? NO! 3- CB is not a good guy to have in camp? NO! 4- CB is not a good guy? NO! 5- CB did a bad job in handling his personal finances? Yes. He isn't the first or the last.

Craig is the one that got me interested in Africa hunting after listening to him speak at a DSC meeting several years ago. I do not know what rifles he owns, but at the DSC meeting they were selling rifle tickets for the rifle he had been using. I had a pleasant conversation with him and thanked him for donating the rifle. His response was that he hated to see it go, but it wasn't his. It seems that many of the rifles that he uses on his hunts are loaned to him. DSC Life Member NRA Life Member

What's not known is what assets Craig has in his corporate life and what is owned by his personal life. This sounds like personal bankruptcy. Many of his assets, trophies, property, rifles, etc., may be owned by his corporation / corporations. At my very 1st DSC conv. I was shopping for an outfitter for my 1st safari. My wife & I had narrowed it down to 2. I met Craig at a book signing & ask his opinion, he made a recommendation & I had 2 very good safaris with this outfitter(Hunters Namibia). After watching 1 of the shows with his wife Donna as the hunter, I learned the value of taking mole skin on safari. I developed blisters on the 2nd day of my 3rd safari, the mole skin save my hunt. I learned a lot from Craig during his time with TAA about what to take on safari & what to leave at home. NO, I did not go out & buy any products just because he advertised for them. We have visited with Craig & Donna at DSC each year & have found them to be very likable people. I very much hate that they are having financial difficulties & also hate it for those that are owed. BK sucks for all concerned. LORD, let my bullets go where my crosshairs show. Not all who wander are lost. NEVER TRUST A FART!!! Cecil Leonard

I am the one who mentioned about the bankruptcy's, and didn't feel it was necessary to go into the depth that Larry did.. maybe I should have. He's right. Also, the amount you can deduct each year, but that may not hold true for a company. BRs aren't for the benefit of the folks owed money, they are to help the debtor get back on track, by eliminating those debts. By definition, if you're going into a BR, your debts exceed your ability to pay them, and protect your assets. As I also noted, a BR doesn't mean you can't go back and pay the debt holder, indeed, in the case of a collaterlized loan, mortgage for instance, it's normal to do that, since the lien holder can reclaim the house, etc., if their debt written off and re-affirmation not done. I hardly think Craig went into bankruptcy to be vindictive and write off debts he just didn't want to pay. As for taxidermy, as I also noted, it has essentially NO value. Even exotic stuff only brings a few $100 per piece most of the time. Thanks, Larry, for being more explicit.

Just a few thoughts. I have only met Mr. Boddington casually a few times at DSC. He seemed polite and pleasant enough especially in light of the fact he is under a public microscope with many people clamoring for a piece of his time. I understand he has celebrity status and public records are after all public. But that does not preclude the rest of us from behaving like gentlemen exercising a moral compass and affording someone, celebrity or not, some decency and privacy in matters which should not be public concern or domain particularly if we are not individually affected. I joined this forum some years ago for information, enlightenment, and entertainment prior to my first foray to Africa. In fairness I must say it delivered on those accounts but am truly disappointed at the pettiness and sniping that pervades from time to time. Have we not enough enemies outside our ranks that we must savage one another from within? Mr. Boddington, I truly wish you well and hope you can resolve your issues. Over the years I have enjoyed and appreciated a great deal of your work, some not so much ( but then I don't like all of Shakespeare or Poe either).

AAZW, just one thought here, and I’m through with this, because the more you stir sh*t the worse it smells! It has become evident that your opinion is in a minority here, and that one opinion is just as good as another but in the end are only opinions! I attended a Boddington seminar at the DSC a few years ago, where someone in the audience said to CB, “for the amount of hunting you do you must have tons of taxidermy! Where is hell do you put all that taxidermy?” Boddington answered him with “I have very little taxidermy myself, because I don’t have room for it. I donate most of it to friends, and sporting goods stores, and restaurants where I know the owners, and museums.” Even though, taxidermy is part of the décor in ones home, and not part of a BR action. Like the Cabela’s stores 99% of the taxidermy in those stores are either donated or bought to decorate the stores. I’m sure some of that was taken by guys just like Boddington! AAZW, you may do as it suits , and post anything you want, I suppose that is your right, but speaking for myself only, this is a legal matter between Boddington and the courts, and I feel making any comment on it publicly, till it is ruled on, is irresponsible, and smacks of Kangaroo courts and opinion that can cause some very dire outcomes for people who are already hurting on both sides of this thing! ………………………………………….Good day sir! ....Mac >>>===(x)===> MacD37, ...and DUGABOY1 DRSS Charter member "If I die today, I've had a life well spent, for I've been to see the Elephant, and smelled the smoke of Africa!"~ME 1982 Hands of Old Elmer Keith

Good shoeing Cal! The two things you mention above are two absolutely different things! One (CB BR), and MS ethics! One will be settled by the courts, and the other will be settled by hunters who see poor ethics! Opinion on a legal court case made very public on the internet can sway the court decision while a debate on ethics only makes one hunter think of what he considers as poor, or ethical ways of hunting that is acceptable by most hunters! IMO, one needs to let legal matters be sorted out by the courts, while one hunter's lack of accepted ethics reflects on us all as hunters! My total opinion of MS is: He is a very skilled PH, he is evidently is a good business man, considering his prices some are willing to pay, IMO, his respect for the animals he hunts, and SHOOTS for his clients very poor respect for his clients as well. I bought his first three films, and that did it for me. For me, I think I will just let this thread choose how it wants to die without further input from me!! ......................................................................BYE ....Mac >>>===(x)===> MacD37, ...and DUGABOY1 DRSS Charter member "If I die today, I've had a life well spent, for I've been to see the Elephant, and smelled the smoke of Africa!"~ME 1982 Hands of Old Elmer Keith

Mac: Funny, but what one (not you BTW) sends me in private but posts in public are often very different. There are many people that won't post their opinion publicly about this because they know they will get the usual guff. That is their right. I am not holding a Kangaroo court at all. I have come to learn many of you will be loyal to CB no matter what he does (I am guessing if espoused making AR15s illegal he would still have his fans on AR). I am not out to change your opinion. I haven't contacted his sponsors, wrote letters to his publishers, or anything remotely similar. AR posts are not exposed to Google searches; if I wanted to do that, I could have gone over to 24 Hour Campfire - those posts are. I am just expressing my opinion that he has lost my respect. Last time I checked, that was still legal in this country.

Just a few observations: 1. For folks not to believe that there is a double standard at play here (as between CB and MS) is naive. 2. In that regard, curious that folks can watch one of MS's DVDs and conclude he is a selfish and unethical person. 3. On the other hand, someone meets CB at a show for three minutes and has him sign a book and he is a very giving and generous person. 4. Bottom line, folks are going to look for and find what they want they want to find in both situations -- fact is that the truth probably lies somewhere in the middle in both instances. Mike

Although I would be considered a supporter of CB, I am not one to criticize MS. I know CB a little bit, do not know MS at all. However, I would hunt with either and try to learn from both in a heartbeat. I have never said a negative word about Mark, and never intend to do so. As hunters we owe much of the positive attention to our endeavors to CB than any other writer alive today. Not to mention his over 30 years of decorated military service. I know my resume doesn't match up to CB's. Does yours? Many of us are only a lost job, medical condition, or marital conflict away from bankruptcy. Donald Trump has filed for BR protection at least a couple of times. We all need to look for more kindness and understanding. I don't understand the personal / professional grudges a few hold against CB. It's like eating your own. Sorry to disappoint you, Saeed, but not everyone is hurt when an attorney gets involved. Just wondered how long it would take until someone blamed the attorneys because a BK was involved. Never had a line at my door wanting a refund when I assisted them or their family members with their legal difficulties. My pro bono work is never published nor should it be but I put in a significant amount of free work. Many attorneys assist those who cannot pay or afford an attorney. It is our social responsibility to help those who cannot assist themselves. And if I quote you a fee, perform the service and then get you a great result then you, sir, are not "hurt". At the end of my career I can hold my head up and know that I acted honestly and made a difference. Dutch

Dutch, I participate in an arbitration committee - just 3 individuals - and we always try our best to make sure any disagreement is sorted out between the parties involved, rather than go further and taken to court. In every single incident where one party insisted on going to court, they have regretted it afterwards. From what I understand from CB bankruptcy filings - and I am certainly no authority on such matters - he is trying to protect himself from several law suits. Cal, There is absolutely no comparison here between CB and MS. Comparing the two, their videos speaks volumes. One has always come through as an individual who cares and respects hunting. The other has always gone out of his way to denigrate it and show HIMSELF as the ultimate predator with his 600 NE. The animals and hunting have always been irrelevant to him, as long as he could shoot his clients animals and brag about it.

Better that people read the details of the actual bankruptcy petition, than just relying on inaccurate or unfounded rumours. Mr.Boddington himself has before expressed on AR, that people being enlightened to the facts, is important in preventing a rumour mill. The longer the facts-details remain unclear or unknown, the worse and more misleading the rumours usually get.
The federal court dealing with a bankruptcy, don't give a rats crap about how good CB appears in his hunting videos. Nor would the fed. court give a rats crap how MS appears-conducts himself in his videos. How C.Boddington has conducted himself financially, outside of cameras view, is what really matters.

Saeed: I would agree that, in certain situations, mediation is preferable for some civil cases. I too have participated in both arbitration and mediation (around 60 or so) and they have, with 2 exceptions, proved fruitful. However, BK's are to protect debtors and afford creditors some relief (in Chapter 13 only). All are entitled to this protection (with rare exceptions)and I would be the last to blame anyone who chooses this recourse unless resorting to fraud. I was not directing my comments at Craig's situation but at the general feeling that attorneys profit off of others shortfalls. I won't defend frivolous lawsuits nor unethical attorneys as I know several that are both unethical and file frivolous lawsuits. I do not respect them nor associate with them. My general complaint about attorneys is that many are lazy and don't communicate with their clients. Bankruptcies are a procedure I am familiar with. With few exceptions no one would wish to take that course of action. My friends that practice in this area are certainly not making the money many would believe as their fees are regulated by the Courts. My experience saw catastrophic medical bills and unavoidable/unforeseen debt/failure as the primary cause of filing bankruptcy. Dutch j

I have never met Craig Boddington, saw him at a couple of DSC conventions but have never spoke to the man. Just observations on my part. 1. Personal jealousy. For whatever reasons, Craig Boddington has been able to lead a life that many people are jealous of. 2. Seeing the mighty brought low. Seeing someone of the stature of Boddington brought low for whatever reason makes some individuals feel superior. 3. Hero worship is not all it is cracked up to be. Regardless of anything else, Craig Boddington is just a man, and just like the rest of us can and does make mistakes. The problem is, relating back to Number One, Personal Jealousy, many folks enjoy seeing someone like Boddington brought low. Even the rocks don't last forever.

Excellent bankruptcy summary Larry!! I read this topic and decided to pull up the filing . Nothing earth shattering in it except point 4 that Larry states. I trade distressed debt and have owned distressed debt/claims in all the American classics - Worldcom, Enron, Lehman, GM and many more. I would argue that the US bankruptcy system both corporate and personal is one of the great legal foundations of American capitalism. We have this really complex and what may seem like and often is messy process to resolve creditor claims. Its better than any other system in the world for complex debt restructuring. Capitalism without bankruptcy is like Christianity without hell - Frank Borman http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Frank_Borman See for example the issues the host country for my favorite website has http://www.arabianbusiness.com...g-louder-516781.html Many a great American has gone bankrupt - Abe Lincoln (my view the greatest American ever) has visited bankruptcy. http://www.cnn.com/2008/LIVING...survived.bankruptcy/ (Please ignore Burt Reynolds in the great 7 ) So in my opinion Craig Boddington's bankruptcy should not be a career destroying event as long as he can continue hunting and writing about it.

Item 4 is very significant . Given the discussion of attorneys, I would like to point out that CB's lawyer got a flat fee of $5,000 as I recall . Bankruptcy is an area that is not abused by the legal profession in the same manner as in others areas.
