My second best buffalo bull taken with Martin Pieters on April 3rd in the Omay North concession. Damn I love hunting buffalo!

Yes he does Andrew... I took this bull in the Omay North in November of 2009. Definitely my best bull to date!

P... I used a rifle I bought from Butch Searcy, a .375 H&H built on a Brno 602 action shooting 300 grain A-Frames for this year's buff.

I look forward to the full report. This years buff sure looks clean and the bush looks thick. Very interesting.

I love the drop. I dislike "flat" buff horns, no matter how wide they are.

I can only assume you are joking about the soft bosses. if not, please check more photos here of hard bossed bulls. congratulations on an excellent buffalo, Russ.

Actually I am not joking. I have never shot one and wanted to know. I have my first buff hunt lined up for next year. To me the real big one with the big drop is not all rugged and knarly in the middle front half of the horn. I just wanted to know if that is normal or if it is a little soft? I meant no disrespect either way as I do not care what he shoots but I would legitamately want to know how you tell the difference? The recent picture shows a buffalo with knarly bumps and groves and is clearly different then the other bull. How do you tell?

These are old bulls and hard bossed. The shape of horn and structure of bosses vary from Buffalo to Buffalo.

My advice is if you were to come across either of these in the field would be to shoot first and ask questions later.

Andrew has it spot on. Young, soft boss bulls have a white "shine" between the bosses and above the eyes and hair between the bosses. That said, I have seen very hard bossed bulls with a thin line of hair between the bosses still.

To be honest, no PH in todays Africa will let you shoot a soft boss bull. It happens fast ussualy at the end, before you shoot, and my advise would be to listen to the PH more than concentrate on if it is hard or soft bossed. Just state your intentions loud and clear when you book on what you expect to shoot.

Thanks for the info. I obviously do not know much about Buffs and I have no intention to shoot what I think I should and will be following the advise of my PH. I am hunting with Zmbezihunters on my hunt with Thierry if it all works out and I would imagine I will have no problems getting a chance at a very good mature bull. Thank you again for the info.
