I find it encouraging ... perhaps evidence that The Shooters Party in the NSW Parliament and its push for hunting in National Parks etc is getting under the noses of academics.

also bringing the university into this might have been a mistake on your part, since we are quite a few people that take hunting and nature conversation seriusly.

Rhyme of the Sheep Hunter
May fordings never be too deep, And alders not too thick; May rock slides never be too steep And ridges not too slick.
And may your bullets shoot as swell As Fred Bear's arrow's flew; And may your nose work just as well As Jack O'Connor's too.
May winds be never at your tail When stalking down the steep; May bears be never on your trail When packing out your sheep.
May the hundred pounds upon you Not make you break or trip; And may the plane in which you flew Await you at the strip.

The source of the criticism should be of no concern to anyone. Our son received degrees in Wildlife and Fisheries Science from Texas A&M amd L.S.U. He remarked that every instructor at L.S.U., where he got his M.S., was a hunter except for one, an ornithologist. Our son-in-law is a tenured full professor who has no problem with hunting, not an "Honarary Associate", whatever that could be. He expects me to help train our four grandchildren how to hunt like real gentlemen and lady.

One would think that a professor or doctor or whatever she is would be more observant and notice that she had included her address before sending....
'Should not have been published on any website'? Says who? These people can spend their pathetic lives trashing our worthy tradition and we can't strike back, is that how it's supposed to be? What a silly woman - puts the match to brush but doesn't expect the veld to burn.

I enjoy this site for many reasons, but the biggest reason is that it gives us a voice.

This is the email I sent Denise....

Good day to you Denise,

Along with a number of other hunters/ conservationists, I was somewhat irritated by the misinformed email you sent to the owner of the accurate reloading website. I want to show you the other side of the coin - what we hunters do when not busy being repulsive boys with big guns pretending to be brave warriors. Try to inform yourself a little better - the only reason there is any wildlife in my country is because of hunting and hunters.

Someone much smarter than I am said something like this: "You cannot reason prejudice out of a person because it was not reasoned into him."

Facts will not convince the good doctor. She is against the killing of animals for any reason, but if we must do it we must not enjoy it.

Her email to Saeed was nothing compared to the hate mail I used to receive as the outdoors columnist of a daily newspaper. What really got my attention were the anonymous death threats, and these came at least once a year.

I must say that I'm rather surprised that this kind of comment even made it to the point that Saeed even noticed it.

Then again, maybe the boorish antihunting behavior and insistence on "correcting" the evil animal hater is a uniquely western phenomenon.

I don't care for antihunters, but I don't go around looking for antihunting bunnyhugger sites and tell them what I think of them either.

I do find it amusing her response that it was a "private" email and should not have been made public. If you make an arse of yourself to someone, don't be surprised if they expose your bad behavior to all the world to see.

Didn't her mother tell her once upon a time "If you don't have something nice to say, don't say anything at all!" ?

honorary associate implies someone who works outside the university but occasionally gives lectures at the school. it is pretty common in medical education. local doctors in private practice in a city with a med school will often make rounds with students, residents, etc. and give lectures-and are given a title of "assistant" professor- purely an honorary title. i am betting this misinformed individual falls into this category. the fact that she is supposedly well versed in Middle East politics is really ironic. oh, and by the way- here is a picture for her mamba collection.

The reason I posted her letter was very simple.

She included all her qualification to add weight to her extremist views.

I sent her an email and got an answer back.

Basically she said I had no right to post that on AR, and asked for that message to be removed.

She believes she has the right to send hate mail to me and the whole hunting community, but we have no right to say anything about it.

And this is from someone who is supposed to have brains, and teaches others as well!

It boggles the mind who we have teaching our children nowadays!

I have told her the message will remain, and if she feels like apologizing, I will be happy to post her apology.

She'd be glad that she wasn't looking for pictures of cats a couple of years back otherwise a lot of nice AR members from the small game forum would have sent some really nice pictures.

I have faith in her "academic" integrity so I took a more conciliatory approach. See my mail and then click on the link to see the documents I sent her:

Dear Dr Leith

I have no doubt that you have unwittingly caught a tiger by the tail with your mail to Saeed Al Maktoum. I for one share much of the frustrations being vented on the AR website by my fellow members.

I would however like to take a somewhat less confrontational tac with you in this regard and having faith in the fact that as a scholarly and learned person you are probably open to at least study aspects of "the other side of the coin". To this end I attach just two documents for your perusal. I sincerely hope you take the trouble to read them.

Should you ever have cause to be in South Africa, and would like an oportunity to meet with the people and see first hand some of the activities you were rather quick to criticise, I would be pleased to host you accordingly or steer you towards people & places that would enlighten you further.

In our area, those folks who teach at University/College level and are not salaried staff academics are known as "adjunct instrutors," but in no way can you involve the institution in any personal attitudes, biases, etc. As pointed out, she most likely added her credentials to point out that she is a person of knowledge???
I believe she used the word repulsive and being one of those "adjunct instructors" I find quite a few things in the University setting as repulsive. Listening to the various conversations at the cafeteria during lunch time, it becomes crystal clear that most, not all, have no concept of the real world and hunting, firearms, is a taboo topic.
Education has provided them with a view of the world similar to looking through a 36X target(very focused) scope vs a 2.5x hunting scope, not much field of view. The word limited comes to mind.
