I received this from a friend of mine in Vic Falls. REPORT ON ILLEGAL HUNTING ON UNIT 6 30TH MAY, 2013. At about 9.30 on Thursday 30th May, 2013, I received a phone call from Rob Styles of Buffalo Range Safaris that this hunting party had encountered a South African registered vehicle hunting illegally on Unit 6, with two whites and one black person on the vehicle. The vehicle was a white Landcruiser twin cab, registration given. They had a Parks scout on board who claimed he had “arrested” the vehicle for trespass into the Parks estate. I contacted Charles Brightman for assistance, and he said he would notify Minerals and Parks, while I phoned parks board members to ensure this was not a sanctioned deal – I was assured it was not. I then proceeded to Katombora with a VFAPU detail. At Katombora, I found Parks Victoria Falls had already reacted ( full credit to them), and the offending vehicle was there with one black guy – no sign of the whites! The stories then came out!! : The Parks game scout had been doing a one man patrol along the Botswana border, and way up it he came across this SA vehicle. He “arrested” it for being on Parks estate illegally. Then, instead of going straight down the border road, they drove deep into the concession “on their way to katombora” when they happened to bump into the legal hunting trip. On reaching the Kazungula Road, it appears the SA vehicle just happened to bump into another one of their vehicles and the two whites departed, leaving the black guy and the scout to proceed to Katombora. Here, the driver under interrogation, claimed he was looking for a friend along the road and had got lost and that’s how he ended up in the middle of the concession!! ( his hunting area is about100km in the other direction, and it turns out he has worked in the katombora area for years!!) I checked in his vehicle and found a TR2 form filled in with only the company name, the PH and the date – no other information – and stamped by Parks. The company was Kalulu Safaris, and their hunting area was Matetsi Farm 50 We then all returned to Victoria Falls and Police and Investigations were called in. The upshot is that Kalulu was found to be a company owned by Mashonyanika and a Joe da Silva. They are well known for bad ethics, and have been under investigation for various deals involving hunting in Matetsi. The result is they were found to have poached a sable with a client on Unit 6, and currently the SA agent, the PH, the learner PH, the SA skinner, the Zimbabwe skinner and two Parks game scouts shave been arrested and are in jail. The vehicle has been impounded. Mashonyanika’s licence has been suspended. There is one very pissed off client sitting in Vic Falls. The investigation is continuing. Parks DG and the board have given maximum support to the investigation, with instructions to nail whoever is involved regardless of any status. The Parks investigation officer has been extremely good and it is very encouraging to see this stance

Kudos to National Parks. Now let's hope they go get those bastards hunting in Hwange . . . although I fear the Hwange group may be holding "permits" to hunt. Mike

Frankly, after all the illegal activities in Zimbabwe with South African so called PH have been reported, I have no sympathy with him. And before someone jumps on me, I know there are quality South African PHs dealing with legitimate outfitters in Zimbabwe. But, there are some very shady South African PH who will try to get a buck no matter what it takes. From hunting in parks, to hunting on confiscated farms, to hunting captured animals and selling them as free roaming trophies.

I have emails from Joe deSilva explaining he had hunting rights on all of Matetsi (1 through 7) for ration quotas but they were shooting trophy animals and they were 100% exportable. A little due diligence, especially when hunting Zim is always in order.

I have said this before, - SA needs some strict laws to prevent their citizens from illegal activities in other countries. No Chris not at all. I have heard of Namibian PH involved in illegal activities in Namibia. I have heard of Tanzanian PHs involved in illegal activities in Tanzania. I have heard of Zimbabwean PH involved in illegal activities in Zimbabwe. But, I have heard of South African PHs getting involved in illegal activities in all the above mentioned countries. If the above is not correct, please tell us what you think.

What has been said may be true. But none of this is happening without the involvement of the citizens of the country in which it is happening. YOu dont just drive across the border and go hunting. They get on with all the papers etc supplied by Zimbabweans who are taking advantage of the chaos in their own country. Naki, the African expert speaks again. There are many thousands of laws on the statutes in South Africa. Most folk living in South Africa pay them little heed, and most Law Enforcement Authorities pay them even less heed unless some weekend spending money can be made. Anyone misbehaving outside the country is of no concern to the authorities here. One can see that Naki lives in an orderly country [although not of his making,] and has not a clue as to what actually goes on in Africa.

Naki - not to be nasty (thanks for the 9.3 info, BTW). RSA has a crapload of laws - among them is forbidding murder, rape, and a few other minor peccadilloes. Amazingly enough, South Africa is pretty high up on the list of most murders, rapes etc per capita. Maybe they should pass more laws that don't get enforced, or MAYBE (here's a new thought) they should get off their butts and actually ENFORCE the laws they already have. Many USAans may notice the similarity. -- Promise me, when I die, don't let my wife sell my guns for what I told I her I paid for them.

So there we have it....... The Saffers are always the only crooks in Africa, obviously don't need the co-operation of any local Govt and/or GD staff to conduct their nefarious activities and everyone else in the African hunting industry is bathed in lily white innocence!

Saeed, You are quite correct. And so are countless Zimbabweans busy with illegal activities in my country right now... Robbing houses, raping woman, killing people and poaching Rhinos... And countless Nigerians are busy defrauding and stealing from people as as are countless Bulgarians busy counterfeiting credit cards and stealing from innocent people... Countless Vietnamese are smuggling Rhino horn out of our country... The list goes on... What I think? Well, I think it is silly to make a remark that SA needs to introduce laws to prevent its Citizens from partaking in crimes outside of its borders... Firstly, I don't think it will be much of a deterrent. Secondly, if SA should introduce such a Law, every other country on this planet should as well. I would like to put afew things straight about this issue. The people and the ckients who were caught have got nothi.g to do with kalulu safaris at all. The Tr2 which was found was fraudulently processed and a case has been opened for investgations. I will make dfforts to see Charles Brightman and Martin Peters to see the way fiward at a national level. Joe Da Silva who you guys are nailing and accusing have got nothing to do with this. The truth is gona come out soon. Thank you

To all members of this forum, please be advised that Joe da Silva and Mash Mashongynika of Kalulu Safaris were NOT involved with the said illegal hunting in Matetsi Area 6. The perpetrators’ used their company details to participate in the nefarious activities of illegal hunting. They have subsequently been arrested. A BIT OF ADVICE TO MEMBERS of this forum; you are well advised to verify your facts before posting. Remember, “What goes around comes around”

Since we seem to have a couple of posters that seem to know Joe da Silva and Kalula, please explain the legalities of the following to me. Joe offered me a hunt on Matetsi. He claimed to have the RATION quota on all of Matetsi (Units one through seven) and was shooting TROPHIES on the RATION quota and they were 100% EXPORTABLE. I saved the emails for future reference.
