We cannot hunt tigers, snow leopard, jaguar, clouded leopard, most species of rhino, most if not all species of Indian & other SE Asian game animals in their original habitat, many species of birds, crocs etc. .... the list goes on.

It is just a matter of time before these closed territories and banned species lists get bigger.

I can see in my own lifetime - say another 22 years - when 80% of today's hunting opportunities around the world will not exist and many more species would have become extinct or near extinct due to plunder by the illegal animal trade that tries to supply the illegal demand.

Naki, I agree with most of what you have said. tu2

But, a demand is just that: A desire to have, eat, possess or somehow use. The good conservation laws, or stupid rules motivated by greenies, may rule that the actual possession of certain animal products may be illegal. But the "demand" or want to have is just human nature and not illegal!

Just my thoughts on what you have said.

Doesnt this just prove that most of Asia is fucked and getting more so from neglect and overpopulation, etc? Is it any coincidence that there is very little established hunting in the continent as a whole. The rest of (most of) the world hunts-on.

Of course there are exceptions like Nepal, Pakistan, Iran, Central Asia ... where they can see the benefit of sustainable use and have opened their borders (some quite recently) to international hunting.

Its interesting how some peoples/societies perceptions can conveniently alter to suite their own will & desires,
an example of this in colonial Africa, where the influx of Europeans and their interests in the
lucrative commercial gains of hunting, took priority over the traditional hunting practices of the natives.

Natives were progressively criminalized as poachers and saw their traditions erased. Europeans as colonials, settlers
and hunters suppressed native hunters as they attempted to gain mastery and hegemony over the wealth of the sporting fields.

Now bear in mind, natives faced challenges & domination not just from invading whites, but also from other natives for access
to productive hunting grounds.
The publication on it is interesting reading: - 'Black poachers, White Hunters: A Social history of Hunting in colonial Kenya'-(Edward Steinhart).

The pure selfish self-interest persuites and disregard attitude held by the dominating colonials of the time were not much different to the
pure selfish self-interests and disregard attitude held by todays poachers.

Its typical of humans through the ages to judge, condemn and/or try to control, dominate or suppress others, who actions or traditions interfere,
conflict,or compete with their own self interests.

It was also doomed in the 1900's. Once used Reader's Guide to research bighorn sheep trophy records and found doom-and-gloom in all the old articles. Lots of records mbroken since then with modern game management. Things will just change. Hey, there's still archery if guns are taken from the picture. And, if you're on ignore but put a new post up we still see it...

All good points.

But due to sound management practices in countries like the US and South Africa there are more game animals now than in the previous 100 years.

No hunting isn't doomed........some ways of hunting will be though.

Gentlemen, I started hunting in 1942, and I can tell you the hunting reputation among society at large has taken a hit in that length of time till today.

All my years in school, I brought rifles and shotguns to school on the school bus, so I could walk across the pastures after school and hunt on my way back to our ranch. In high school I stocked rifles in wood shop several times.

Add to that, years later I built rifles in the machine shop at my job at one of the major airlines.

I used to take my rifles in a soft case into the airplane and the Captain would store it in the cockpit, and hand it back to me at the door when I was leaving the airplane, to walk to my next gate to change planes on my way to Alaska.

Try either of those things today!

Till just a few years ago, I never had anyone make a negative comment about my hunting or roll their eyes when entering my trophy room.

I agree partially with Crazyhorseconsulting that hunting as we have known it has changed drastically over the last 30 or 40 years.

Do I think hunting will completely disappear any time soon, or in my life time? NO I do not, but as CHC said, it is on it's way out in many countries, and It is true that the cost is fast becoming a factor to those who will be able to do serious hunting, and when that and the public's attitude changes enough, only those who are among the ultra wealthy and/or well connected will be in the field. The pricing has already priced me out of Africa, and to some extent Alaska, and Canada. I'll soon be 78 yrs old so I don't think it will die in my life time, but those who are in their 20s may be headed for a real letdown!

Jtex you are partly right - But ....

But Western settlements over the last 200+ years also annihilated many species - Passenger pigeon, American locust, Bison, Prairie Chicken, Ivory Billed Woodpecker, the very ecology of the prairies (with no more elk, wolf etc.).

Same goes for South America, Australia etc.

As long as hunters keep a proper PR campaign with the positives of hunting, hunting will be ok. Plus keep the stupid photos, in my opinion, of hunters sitting on dead animals, posing with beer cans and cigarettes in the mouth of dead baboons, etc off of the internet.

That request came from a fellow Mopar lover. I'm sure if you delete that thread the positive karma alone would probably bring you a Challenger Hellcat in Sublime Green. Big Grin

This has been one of those situations where I should have kept my mouth shut.

I never intended for this to go the direction it has.

The future of hunting, or hunting at least as we have known it, in all seriousness/reality simply appears to be dimming on many fronts.

I really do not feel that the antis, HSUS/PETA/ALF and others are not as serious a threat to hunting as are unstable governments/uninformed politicians and the world economy.

Quickest example I can give is the state of Caribou hunting. I feel very fortunate that I was able to shoot both a Woodland and a Central Canadian Barren Ground Caribou when I did, because Caribou hunts have skyrocketed since 2000. Too many places that used to advertise caribou hunts at pretty decent prices have gone to stating P.O.R..

I was raised up under the premise that if you have to ask how much something costs, you can't afford it.

Deer hunting in Texas alone during my almost 45 years of hunting, has become basically the playground for folks in the upper middle income or higher economic class.

Is hunting doomed, YES, but I am going to continue hunting as long as my body holds out. I do not believe those of us in the 40 and older crowd will see the end of hunting, but those following us very well may see it.

Even the rocks don't last forever.

Your probably correct. It does not mean that I will quit hunting or supporting hunting as long as I am able.

In one reality, I sincerely hope I am wrong about the future of hunting.

In Real Time reality however, I have watched the changes that have been taking place, especially during the past 25 years and too many folks today in my opinion have wandered away from the real reasons why a person hunts, and have turned it into a competition on too many levels.
