Not only a super mega bugly stuff up but a magical one at that.

Check the slo-mo at 2.10 when the first shot is fired before he's even got the handgun out of it's holster.

Not that I'm suggesting there's someone off camera with a rifle ready to keep his arse safe.

What a bloody JOKE!

It is idiots like this slob who give hunting a bad name!

You want to go spear a buffalo?

Fine, do it alone with a SPEAR, not with someone standing by with a rifle! Mad

Inanother video on youtube, you can see that buffalo tied to a tree!

So South Africa has canned lions.

Now Australia has canned buffalo!

It certainly was a "little" buffalo as well! Wonder how that would have worked out with a mature bull? And without rifle backup??

It's another one of those You Tube videos that indirectly stabs hunters in the back. That video clip is fine to show your buddies at your weekend gun club, but keep it out of the public eye. What redeeming value does that have for the hunting community?

Was he an idiot or not? I'm not going to judge too harshly, it's hard to get within spear range of most animals I know, I've tried. How many of you hunt buffalo without your guide having a back up gun? So this guy should have no back up simply because he's using a spear? Bit of a double standard I'd say.

Young buffalo like that can be a bit dumb
and will not run off at first sight - especially
when you have a dirty great Termite mound to hide behind as you stalk.

A spear will kill a Buffalo (Aboriginies did it) but not something I want to try. A big big Bull, 700kg to 1 ton,
no thanks.

BTW, I hunt Buffalo without a back up and
occasionally it gets a bit hairy !!!!

The biggest problem for me is that there is no mention of someone off camera taking action to keep him safe. He appears on screen and gives it the 'big un' about how wonderful he and his handgun are but the film shows quite clearly that a shot goes off before he even has the hand gun drawn.

As for trying to use a spear etc....... I personally wouldn't want to do it but if he does, then that's his choice but I have to say, I think if he's gonna do it, he should do it to a mature bull rather than an animal that's virtually got milk on it's lips still.

There were no other shots fired. No shot at 2:10 - you cannot see what made that sound but can only assume it was the spear being smashed out of the buffalo's horn, on the termite mound perhaps. The only shots fired came from the handgun - yes of course there was a PH there with rifle but he did not fire.

Matt,

On my computer you hear a distinct gunshot as he's just got his hand onto the hangun but before he draws it...... time is about 2.10 or so and I played it 4 times.

Did you have your volume turned up? Smiler

Yup. I've just played it 4 more times and it sounds to me like there's a distinct shot at 2.09 and he doesn't draw that handgun until 2.11 or 2.12.

What do others hear?

It doesnt really matter what others hear.... I am telling you there was no other shot. The first shot was fired from the handgun and hit the buff in the back of the head, killing it. The guide did not fire because he was too far back and the buffalo was too close to Thompson.

So what was the noise that sounded like a gunshot at 2.09? bewildered

It certainly sounded like a gunshot to me and just to say it isn't, ain't much of an explanation.

I'm open to other explanations but to me at least, it sounds like a gunshot.

If you were there, you should be able to explain the noise and if you weren't there, you can only surmise like the rest of us.

I already did explain - it was not a gunshot, did not sound like a gunshot - was most likely the spear hitting the termite mound and flying forwards as you can clearly see (well I can). No I was not in the editing room, no I was not standing right there but I can tell you the guide nor anyone else fired a rifle... or anything else apart from the handgun on Thompson's side.

No need for any more detective work Steve!!

I don't agree with everything that has been done on these spear hunts... but (as I have said many times before) - Thompson is a full-paying client - we take on this work because we do all sorts of alternative-method hunts - this is no different to a archery, handgun or muzzleoader hunt... just that little bit more extreme, quite extreme. Yes it is a stunt but I think they are all stunts to some extent. We oversee these hunts very carefully and seriously.

I concur with Moja to some extent however - this one probably would have been best confined to the den... but hey... the animal was killed quickly.

Steve. I can send you the guide's email address if you like and you can ask him yourself if he fired at that buffalo. Peter Harding is one of the most experienced and professional buffalo guides working in Australia, as many AR members, who have been guided by him will attest.

the noise at 2.15 sounds alot like a gunshot,...
the knock noise at 2.07 and other at 2.10, both sound alot less like a gunshot.

[maybe the noise at 2.10 is a gunshot,..if the PH was using .22 subsonics.... rotflmo]

The hunter failed with his spear attempt and backed himself up with his .454casull.
seems fine to me, but some may not consider it kosher,
but when a hunter fails with a med.bore 9,3 or .375 and PH backs up with his uber BigBore...it somehow is? bewildered

Spears, arrows and rifle/pistol bullets are all 'projectiles'....each with a different means of propulsion.

After reviewing the video, I believe what you heard is the sound of the spear hitting the horn.

To each, his/her own. I don't know who the hunter is and I won't place critiscism on the method. His spear hit the horn, which in all honesty to me, looked like the buffalo used his horn to block it. The man moved fast and made a very quick kill with his hand gun after.

What's the problem?

The buffalo definitely blocked the spear ... a young bull may well seem dopey but they have a very fast reaction time.

Spear hitting the horn is at 2:07. Spear being smashed out of the horn is around 2:10.

On a side-note - In all honesty I have had more 'problems' with bulls of this age (unwounded of course) than with mature bulls. They are quite jumpy and defensive when you bump into them in the bush.

What a terrible thing to say about another person. thumbdown Thompson puts in a full day on the trail, while ever there is daylight he will push others on. He never complains about a thing except having to return to camp.

Love him or hate him - Thompson is what he is .... he is deliberate in his actions and unashamed.

To me he is a client and a friend as well.

Oh - I see what you mean now. The guy stalks the bull SLEEPING under a tree with his spear and then in another clip you see him running back from the bull after he THREW THE SPEAR. I can speak with some authority on this matter as I was standing just to the right of the cameraman with my 450. You can call me a liar if you like....

There is no buffalo tied to any tree. If you knew anything about Asiatic buffalo you would also know that that bull supposedly tied to the tree is much, much older than the very young bull that Lynn threw the spear at.... it isn't even close to the same age.

I think it is time to retract your ill-informed comments Saeed. We dont tie buffalo to trees!! Thompson is not a slob, (I dont know where you get that idea from?) he may not be the most graceful stalker.... but I guess there are more than one AR member who may be a little overweight and not the lightest on their feet.

By the way - the only reason I am commenting here is that obviously it is well known that we have outfitted some hunts for Thompson, including the 2011 spear hunts and most of the 2009 handgun hunts. I stand by what myself and my company does in the field.
