This Jackal came running to our call. My PH was playing with an electronic call that I thought sounded like sounds comming from a haunted house in a "B" movie Jim "Bwana Umfundi" NRA

You can take mouth callers like critter callers or a electronic caller. They will work. I have done a few posts in the varmint section on jackal. Have a look. https://forums.accuratereloading.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/5411043/m/472106874 https://forums.accuratereloading.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/5411043/m/254102684 Gerhard Gerhard FFF Safaris Capture Your African Moments Hunting Outfitter (MP&LP) Proffesional Hunter (MP&LP) History guide Wildlife Photographer www.fffsafaris.co.za

They are very effective, I always have one in my backpack. Last year in Namibia I called a jackal right to the back porch of the lodge one evening. One of my friends has taken dozens of varmints on several safaris with the help of mouth blown calls.

Anyone ever call in one of the big predators? Steve "He wins the most, who honour saves. Success is not the test." Ryan "Those who vote decide nothing. Those who count the vote decide everything." Jakkals mentioned a rabbit distress call. Anything else to suggest? I'm off to Namibia next month and might have time for a little predator action. I would use mouth calls.

There are many mouth calls that you can use. I use the critter caller and yellerdog calls. They are open reed calls, give you a wide range of sounds like rabbit in distress, fawn in distress and rodents. All these calls are used as dinner bells as the mating season should be finished by now. Ring the bell and you might have some fun. I have been calling "varmints" in Africa since my first trip in 1983 and have called lots of jackals and African wildcats, two caracals and one leopard with jackrabbit-distress mouth calls. The leopard was called at night and circled us about 75 to 80 yards out. Unfortunately its was in Natal and I wasn't allowed to shoot it. Hubert Thummler, a Weatherby Award winner who lives in Mexico, tells about calling in and shooting a leopard during the daytime in his "Wind In My Face," which I wrote with him. He and his PH spotted the cat across a canyon and brought it to within 75 yards, where he shot it. I would not call anywhere there are lions. There is at least one PH in South Africa (I've forgetten his name) who specializes in calling. He claims he calls bushpigs regularly at night. If anyone is interesteed, I can look up his name and contact info. Bill Quimby
