Hey y'all,
I just wanted to throw some pics up of the watusi my dad shot last January. We have friends near Atkinson, NE that had this bull in their Elk enclosure and wanted to get rid of it quickly because he was just plain mean and would charge the truck. My dad was more than happy to take of the bull and also "practice for cape buffalo" in the process.
ENJOY!

Dang, now that's a set of horns! I never even knew such a beast existed. What are its origins and history, please?

They are domestic African Ankole Watusi cattle from East Africa.

I have never been around one that wouldn't love you to death to get a bucket of grain.

Nice photos, nice bull, interesting situation.

They are on the small side as cattle go, a 1000 pound one is huge.

Well FYI.....they're not all like "puppies", trust me. I have seen several that would charge you without hesitation if you were on foot. Also, there was a female on a place I hunted last year that would start running away when the truck was 300-400 yards away. She would have been nearly impossible to kill without getting lucky by ambushing her from a stand. She was SUPER wild!!

I just don't want everyone on here to think that ALL Watusi are tame, because they're not.

Ok only 99% of them are attack puppies.

"without hesitation" meaning for no reason? Maybe if a guy was wearing a red shirt, with a pro beef campaign logo on it.

Any range cattle are wild, especially if they are on a 2000 or 3000 acre plus pasture and never get handled.

If you had spent your entire life growing up around livestock and every ankole watusi cow you saw would lick you to death for a sugar cube and a belly rub, you would feel the same way.

Even bison bulls in Yellowstone national park, grizzly bear sows with cubs, and cape buffalo will show hesitation. These watusis you speak of in texas must be the most dangerous animal in the world!

I always enjoyed giving Eland Slayer a hard time, he gets pretty spun up on stuff!

When you turn 21 let me know so I can send you $10 to buy a beer and a lap dance on me.

Seriously though.....I didn't mean for it to sound like I was suggesting all Watusi are wild. I'll admit that most are relatively timid.....but I was just saying I've seen a few that are absolutely viscious. And yes, I've grown up around cows and farm critters quite a bit. There's some angus bulls out there I wouldn't mess with either. haha

I'd hold him to that offer of $10, if I were you, Eland Slayer. $10 should buy you a six pack of decent beer, but I wouldn't expect it to go very far in a decent (or indecent) strip club.

Amen, if you're gonna buy him a lap dance, buy him a good one. I can suggest a few studios of the performing arts in Houston, near Eland Slayer.

The Hunt goes on forever, the season never ends.

I didn't learn this by reading about it or seeing it on TV. I learned it by doing it.

Frequently, cattle that have been raised with frequent contact with modern Western Humans lose all fear of man, and a few of them can occasionally become ornery or down-right mean and dangerous. The ones that haven't seen many humans usually run like any wild animal would.
The worst I ever had was a Simbra (Simmental-Brahma cross) bull that I had raised as a pet at the home place-- separate from the farm-- and then turned out with the cows when he was two. He developed the bad habit of wanting to butt the vehicles that came into the pasture. He was just playing, but any attempt to correct the behavior of a 1500 pound two year old bull is gonna be difficult, and their "play" is not benign stuff for humans.
We never had any Watusi/Ankole.
