Sitting in camp in northern BC watching it snow out the window. I am warm today, and that hasn’t been the case for a week.

I have been moose hunting with Moose Valley Outfitters, and the weather has been awful! It rained or we had wet snow 5 of 6 days. I took most of the photos on the nice day!

Anyway, we didn’t see a moose until day 3, and saw a cow and calk. My hunting buddy Larry Caan did kill a B&C moose that day that was 55”wide. Canada moose don’t get much bigger.
Day 4, we found a 40ish inch bull, and I passed him up, but we got good video of him. Larry went mt goat hunting this day and killed a nice 9 ¼” billy and was tagged out.

Day 5, we rode to a high mountain meadow, and after calling some, we jumped a big shooter bull from his bed while we were riding to a high mountain pass. I was sick, but what can you do?

Day 6 was terrible weather. We got up to 30mph wind and blowing snow. We had a long day, getting wet and cold, and calling occasionally. About 3:00, we were riding through a willow choked high meadow, and Leaf, my guide, bailed off his horse, and I knew something was up.

He said he had ridden up on a bull at about 30 yards that was bedded in the willows. The wind was howling in our face, snow was coming down like crazy, and the bull was facing away. He didn’t know we were there!

We tied the horses up, I got on my sticks and my cameraman was over my shoulder, and I told Leaf to call and get the bull to stand. Grunting didn’t work. I think in the conditions, he couldn’t hear leaf. So He cow called. That did it, and the bull stood up at 60 yards. I put the crosshairs on his shoulder as he was quartering to me, and I let the muzzleloader rip.
The bull went about 10 yards and crumbled. The 250 grain bullet went through and was just under the skin on the far side. What a way to end the hunt! We butchered him, and had a 3.5 hour ride out in the dark to the cabin. It was a bit over 10 miles.

Glad it all worked out and we should be able to make a good show from the hunt.

Good Hunting,

Tim Herald
