I’ve been visiting this site for a while now (just lurking) but finally signed up. I am 14 and have been hunting since I was 6. I am even getting into reloading. I have found a number of tricks and tips here that otherwise would have taken me years to figure out on my own. This is really a great site with information and experience that you won‘t find anywhere else.

I usually read the posts over my Dad’s shoulder. Sometimes, though, he covers up something or scrolls fast. He doesn’t want me to see what was written. It always seems to be from the same person, too. I got to talking to my Dad about this, and he said it’s not so much the content but the malicious attacks. We talked about it, and he said I’ll show you. So he pulled up an old thread. I may be young, but I was raised better than to behave the way this person does. I don't see any need for anyone to ne this mean-spirited.

I told my Dad I wanted to search and put these together to show everybody what this person does. These are just the tip of the iceberg. THERE WER MANY, MANY MORE. But you don’t have to read anymore of them. You can go to a post, click on this guy’s name/public profile and click ignore. You won’t see any more of the posts by this person. Two of my friends have already done this. I will do so also.

The name of this poster is VarmintGuy and he/she is from Montana.

My dad even advised me against this post but said he would leave the decision to me. Mom is going to KILL me!). I am sorry if I am wrong for posting it. I am also sorry if this is the wrong forum, but he seems to post here quite a bit. So many other people post good, helpful information. That’s what I expect to see, not the potty-mouthed language of this VarmintGuy person. Time for my homework now. (There is never enough time for hunting stuff!)

Your first post will not make you many friends. But it is a valid issue.

As I said I won't disagree that some could clean up their language. Calling them on it as your first post might not be the way to get started.

Hate to say it but we often forget we are not just a bunch of old guys sitting around the campfire. Yes wifes and kids do read it. Things I might say at the lease I wouldn't say in mixed company.

Being 14 I bet most of the language you have heard before much from other kids at school. If not then I would think you are the exception. By no means am I saying it is right.

Just trying to let you know as much as many of us wish the way off color language didn't happen it won't stop. Only suggestion I have is if it bothers you too much then use your own ignore function. But often mixed with the color is good info. The site doesn't edit posts so with the freedom to voice your issues you also get to listen to some of the off color. I prefer the ability to say what I feel.

Guess I could always tell you like I told my sons and the other kids in camp. If you hear bad language in camp it better stay in camp.

I knew it may not be popular what I said. I do sometimes hear that kind of language around kids my age. I guess it was more that it seemed "attack" oriented than just bad language. I am glad this site is not censored. This is one of the best sites of any kind that I have found. I really enjoy it.

Also, I don't hear the language at school. I am home schooled. That is why we are on vacation and visiting relatives in Texas this week (while my friends are in the classroom ha ha). I will get to do some hog hunting in the brush country near Freer later this week. I hope we get to do some coyote calling also.

I can see the issue, and I know the feeling of being sick of a particular poster's contributions.

I will say this in defense of "VarmintGuy" (although I'm not sure he needs me to defend him), though, he is extremely helpful and knowledgeable. He writes some of the more entertaining (long) posts about his gun buying and hunting adventures. Sadly, he does seem to get a bit wound up when he gets into an argument, and there seem to be no holds barred in those situations. That is a bit sad and not easily understood, when you interact over a forum to have a good time, with people you basically share a lot of interests and values with. Having said that, VarmintGuy surely is not the only member who has trouble striking that balance.

In VarmintGuy's defense, it takes a while and it is usually in the middle or at the end of a long argument when he gets abusive. If you see it start to happen then you can quit reading that post. Also, if you treat him with dignity and respect, you'll get the same. He is responding to others who are egging him on (probably on purpose to get the reactions you object to).

I can remember when I was 14. I used to talk and type just like this.

dreamstohunt247-On the internet, you do have to take the good with the bad. But like you've noted, this is one of the best sites you will find, and there's plenty of good, helpful information that gets shared.

As to VG, he is an avid shooter/hunter and does offer some interesting insight. But on occasion he, along with a few others here, can and do get rowdy and what I'd call disrespectful. But the rest of this site more than makes up for it.

No, I don't think that first post was necessarily a good way to start out here on AR. But at least it does show that some of today's youth still have good moral convictions and that not all of them are stuck to the screen of a video game all day long (I am NOT a fan of those video games).

Mark Twain once said "...profanity is the sign of a feeble intellect (and poor breeding) and extreme intellectual laziness...".

Any expression of profanity is the signature mark of someone who lacks imagination and basic cognitive skills in the english language. To use the "F" word, or any other bit of profanity for emphasis loses, entirely, it's shock value unless sparingly used. It is the sign of a lazy and/or feeble mind to replace actual thoughts by the wholesale use of profanity in lieu of actually describing your feelings. Middle school children delight in trying to impress each other, and (hopefully) shock those not into vulgarity as a replacement for individual thought and descriptions. My oldest son came home from Jr High and said the "F" word in my hearing. I had him write it out ten-thousand times for me on some tablets. We kept them, and I told him that every time he wanted to say the word to just go get one of the tablets and scratch out one of the lines. By time he did that a few times he got the hint. He told me he was about halfway thru Airborne Ranger School before he felt the need to say it out loud.

Just on the off chance that this is not reaching you, just say it out loud to your grandmother or mother a few times at the next family get together. Something snappy like "...hey gram or mom, pass me some of those "F-ing" mashed potatoes and that "F-ing gravy" would you please...?". Or something at church like "pastor that was one "F-ing" awesome sermon you just preached.

Once you turn eighteen, profanity doesn't (favorably) impress anybody...it just shows your ignorance. Try it on your next job interview and let me know how impressed the interviewer was.
It just shows a lack of respect for yourself and the other persons who has to hear/read it.

I myself have been the subject of VG's ire at times but after engaging in many such conversations (and VG needs me not for his defense) I have learned not to take it personal-- in fact at times I truly take some of the "comments" as a compliment

I grew up in the 70's elk hunting with a bunch of Seattle Homicide detectives-- profanity, Jack Daniels and strange discussions of female body parts I did not readily understand yet. I would never defend the use of profanity to get a point across, however I do not dismiss folks because they use it. I tend to look for the message underneath it all. Sure, if it offends me and I don't like it-- I'll let 'em know; but I think the world has bigger issues than the semantics we use to discuss them.

What I find most interesting about this original post is a young man who sees something he doesn't like-- and stands up against it. For that at least, I applaude you.....
