Howdy Guys-
New to this forum, and computers and forums in general and being retired, am a "45-70er" since Marlin brought out the '95, and am very happy to have found this site!

I am haveing no luck finding data on the 458-WSM. Specifically, I'd like to know what kind of performance one could expect from this cartridge when loaded with 400 gr bullets to 2.55 L.O.A. ro C.O.L. Yeah, the 45-70ers will recognise this number-you get the idea.

Checked the Noveske site and the fat mags folks and several other places, but can't seem to find any good data of any kind.

I'm hoping you folks could steer me to a source.

Thanks in advance.

Great site, very interesting people.

RG

p.s.

have you considered the 450 alaskan???

same performance and would be cheaper.

also there is my wildcat idea of the 45-80. it is a 2.3" case and you can use factory 45-70 ammo. if you dont want to use cut down 45-90 brass then you can just seat the bullets out farther or use reg. 458 rifle bullets. to get a marlin to feed .2" longer you will need to get dave clay to do the work.

Thanks guys for the quick response and sorry about my slow response-moving to new digs, the house full of cardboard boxes and things kin of semi-chaotic at present.

Jeff- thanks for the link to John's thread.
He's getting 2100 with 400 gr. and wondering what it would do with a 22" tube. I sort of foggily extrapolate to come out at about 2300.(!) Could this be approximately correct? If so, then I got to thinking about 500 grs. About 20% of case volume will be lost due to the longer bullet intruding deeper into the case, but even so, I come up with about 2000.
This is .458 Winnie territory. Could any of these foggy speculations be anywhere near right?
This is while maintaining a 2.55 COL. Looking like a hot little bugger. Would very much like to here comments on this.

Thanks Boom for Dave Clay's address- it has been recorded in my little black book.

Like your 45-80 idea-
About 30 yrs ago I modified a '95 Marlin to accept a .458X2.25. Everything worked great, but I can say that the steel used by Marlin, and the subsequent heat-treat results in some *tough* stuff. It don't like being machined!
So, Ive decided, as a matter of policy, to hang with 2.55 COL.
Another one would be the 450 Alaskan at 2.1 brass length. Other obvious ones are the .416 Rigby and the .505 Gibbs, both at 2.1. Have either of these been attempted?

O.K.- got to pack some more boxes..
Thanks guys
