I had assumed the question was why not a 416X64 instead of the 416AAgaard thinking the 64 case would give more capacity and still fit in the 06 length actions.

As usual just my $.02

Even though there's only one manufacturer (Hornady) for .376 brass, it's alot easier to find than 9,3x64 brass. Normal price is @ $35.00 per 50 for .376 brass whereas x64 brass is frequently made of unubtainium here in the USA. I get enough velocity from the Aagaard using the Steyr brass to be dangerous to anything I'd normally hunt.

My point exactely. -06' length actions are plentiful, .376 Steyr lenth actions not! So they may be ideal for a Mexican mauser, but if they are normaly loaded to .30-06 lenth, the .376 Steyr as a mother case seems very strange.
If cost is a matter, the .416 AR is the way to go.

I very much understand that some people want to honor Finn Aagaard, but naming this cartridge, seems a strange way to do it.

Sorry I have not been on the board for a while... Any standard 06 length action will work just fine. 98 Mausers seem to be popular for this caliber, no particular reason. Cool

The answer is pretty simple, two reasons:

1. Brass, 9.3x64 brass is as easy to find in the U.S. as hens teeth.

2. It was designed for a client to meet his requirments. Like most things in the gun world, no two guys agree on what the perfect design would look like, no different with this one. Wink

mr zeglin,

is it possible to make a 411 hawk out of 06 basic brass with a case that is 2.6" long to get the max out of an 06 action. i guess the easiest way would be to expand the 380 howell and fire form

the extra .1" i think might be able to squeeze another 50 or 75 fps or is this wishfull thinking? it would be good for the long 400 grainers Smiler

Actually I have a cartridge based on the 30-06 cylindrical brass we sell. It is 2.650" long to take full advantage of our brass. It's called a 411 Express and has been around for several years.

I have a gun here I built to test the cartridge. The early tests showed very little difference over a 411 Hawk even though there is more capacity. I really need to take some time to wring this one out.

I've tried using the Howell brass to form my wildcats vs the 280 case. While the case is longer you are normally limited to the same OAL. Unless you can really seat the bullet out the net capacity is the same. I saw no difference. So I gave the Howell brass away and kept using the 280 case.
