Just as the name implies. Does anyone know if this has been done. I am thinking of putting it on an AR platform, starting off with a 308 win. Should only be slight mods to the receiver and a barrel change. If no one has claim to this, I think I will call it the .45 Gandhi. Simple reason is that it will bring peace to anyone or anything on the recieving end.

I'd say do 458 and use 458 SOCOM and 45-70 bullets

I know that conventional wisdom would be to just go with the .458 size bullets but the stores around me dont redily supply them. Yes I know that I can order them but I want somthing that I can go out and buy. So I'm assuming that is a no to the .452-.284 being done before.

Buffalo arms has 284 basic brass that I would use instead of trying to neck up to .452.

Think about functional impact velocity. Most bullets will be too soft.

Looking into it, I think that you are right, just going to have to suck it up and go with the .458's. Apparntly they dont make solits or FMJ in 300gr.

One option I looked at was using 44 mag bullets. Have a mini shoulder or blow out for tad more and shoot 300 grainers or the 400 grain beartooth bullet for serious creatures.
44-284

The 44-06 has been done back in 1976...basically a cut down '06 to 1.285" so a 308 case would work and you wouldn't have to screw around with ANY changes to a 308 AR platform but I can think of several alreadybeendone and readily available cartridges.

But wildcatting is about innovation...just do it then tell us about it. Big Grin

The commercial 450 Bushmaster is .452 bullets using a 284 Winchester head size case shortened to 1.700" case length.

Not aware of anything using full length 284 Winchester brass.

A 44-06 would be easy
A 44-9,3x62 even easier.
A 44-284 improved would have a shoulder to headspace off of even though small like the 10.75x68
On a short action the 284 case would give more useable case capacity if loaded out to longer oal.

I"ve done the 44/06 full length version. Easy to do and you use 444Marlin dies.was never satisfied with accuracy or feeding (Rem 700 short action). Tried 44 WSM on Model 70 WSM action. Worked well but still not satisfied. Now shooting 44/350 Rem mag in Rem model 7. Feeds well, accuracy good. Happy now except for bullet selection. So, what does this have to do with your initial post regarding 45/284? It comes down to the above post regarding "Impact velocity". Most .451 cal bullets will not stay together and do their job at the velocity your cartridge is going to generate. Add 1000 fps to most pistol bullets and they blow apart on impact. The Barnes XPB 275 for 460 S&W might work for your application and Barnes Buster 325. The Swift A-Frames as well but the meplat is a bit wide on them for semi auto. Hornady FTX 250 for the 450 Bushmaster is still on the soft side although it is accurate. Will have to look at taking basic 284 brass to .458" Have not thought of that.
