I have only been to Africa once, so I'm certainly no expert. I would however, give a high recommendation to Lochi Lochner of African Varmint Safaris. He not only is an extremely knowledgeable hunter, but he also worked his butt off for us. He also is quite entertaining with a great sense of humor. I don't think you can ask for much else.

Mark,
Im suprised you mentioned Robbie Martin after the start you had with him. We requested him on our second safari and it was better than the first if thats possible. But alas his personal fight with the demon rum seems to have gotten the best of him so ive been told. To bad as we could have hunted africa with only one PH if he had stayed in the business.

SmilerGuav Johnson or his dad, Johnny, for that matter. 3 trips with Guav, 3 buff and 2 elephant, and a host of plains game. All with my wife, and she has become most enthusiastic about Africa and hunting as a result.

Professional, fun, and extremely resourceful in finding dangerous game.

I have only been to the RSA once. We hunted with Schalk Van Heeden, 2003 SCI PH, and we were so happy, am going back again in 2007. Schalk's Bush Africa Safaris is a family operation with excellent facilities in the RSA and a new facility building in Zambia. I was impressed with the way Schalk personally managed the hunt to assure that only quality trophies were taken. He had me really worried that I would not get a kudu, despite seeing several bulls I would have gladly taken for a trophy, but he put me onto a 56 incher on the next to last day of the hunt and "made my day." Also, the food is excellent!

Took my first trip to Namibia last year and hunted with PH Philipus Elias with Jan Oelofse at Mt. Etjo. Had a great time and he hunted hard every day we were there. I liked the hunt so much that we are returning in July 2006. This time we will be hunting with Steve Tors.

Be safe

I can recommend Gary Baldwin of Hippo Valley Safaris without reservation! He is near Chiredzi, Zimbabwe and has an incredible selection of game and some very big buffalo.

Hentie van Heerden---Namibia---never saw a tree he wouldn't climb to glass game, very enthusiastic and great to hang out with around the fire...........
Helgaard van der Vyver---Namibia---absolutely incredible tracker who put me into great trophies when no one else in the group was having any success, willing to walk all day and has an encyclopedic knowledge of local flora and fauna.

I recommend both highly.

Willem and Jonie du Randt
Robbie Hughes
in the East Cape, RSA, Omni Safaris http://www.omnihuntingsafaris.com/

Each of these gentlemen will work their tails off for you. They have the kind of deep understanding of the game that comes from hunting them since early childhood. They do understand and appreciate that hunters DO want a sense of connection with the game they're hunting, and will bring them into the hunting as much as much as the hunter can let them -- it isn't just "there he is -- shoot him on the shoulder."

Willem is a go-getter, wants to DO it much more than talking about it before hand. He will explain things in process. He set up an excelent three-team drive for mountain reedbuck with his brother, Jonie. Robbie will teach you as you go, give you some prep. Does some excelent stalks!

A fine PH, a gentleman, a scholar, a student of the hunt and of the Selous. I've shared two safari camps with him so far and plan on doing so again in 2007. Smiler

Having just returned from RSA, I can tell you I was very impressed with Marius Van Deventer and Andries Nesenberend with Africa Bushveld Safaris (Eastern Cape) Port Elizabeth. These guys are hunting machines and will taylor a hunt just for you. If you want and are able to hunt all day on foot they will do it. Or if you can't walk much they will do anything they can to give you a great hunt. Marius told me they sell an experience and memories, not just animals and he was right. Great guys to hunt with and spend an evening with around the fire.

All in Zimbabwe.

In 2004 I hunted with HHK, PH Wayne Edwards, a great PH sadly killed in a car wreck. I had a great 21 day Safari. Everything HHK said was spot on.

My next 2 Safaris were with Brooklands Safaris, Dale Des Fountain PH, the first 30 days the second 35 days. Both were excellent,
Brooklands is an excellent company.

As mentioned it is important to have a face to face meeting with your PH to be before you sign if at all possible. No matter how succesful the PH may be there are some you will truly enjoy being with and some that can ruin your overall enjoyment. After all the safari is much more than taking a good animal.

Well, I can't believe any of you didn't mention one of the best PH's in all of Africa!

Jonathan Hulme of Zambezi Hunters-Zimbabwe

Another good PH is Kobus Honiball...if you are headed to Namibia.

But seriously, if you want a true dangerous game safari in the wildest places of Africa...go with Jonathan.

I absolutely agree with GRP. Lochi is great!
Also I would recomend Lieb van Rooyen with Ukufa Safaris. It was real pleasure to hunt with them.
