Please remember I am coming from my perspective with my wife accompanying me. I hunted with Matapula Safaris which I felt were the best I've used out of 7 Zim safaris. My PH was Derek (Gomez) Adams and honestly I felt he put us in harms way unnecessarily a few times. My opinion only. As I said in my earlier post, we loved the camps and got excellent trophies but!!!

I hunted with William Finnaughty in 1992 on the Devuli in Southern Zim. It was being broken up at that time and I believe that Roger Whittal bought 30,000 acres and so did Barry Duckworth .. In 1992 William told me that he was 59. He is a superb leopard guide and lots of folks seem to kill a cat the first day with him .. Or so it seemed back then. I last had supper with him in '96 on the Humani .. my son and I were trying to get a leopard with Clive Hallamore .. Lou's 21 year old son. I don't believe that Clive had read his dad's book at that time, 'Chui' .. and we got skunked .. Willim's client already had his leopard in the salt .. I remember William as a really really nice man .. And I think he is the grand son of the famous 19th century elephant hunter .. ?? But that is a long time ago .. he just might be the great grand son ... Confused

I´ve huntes with Tino Erasmus three times and will be revisiting his operation in March. T.G. Safaris.

He is a highly motivated and very ethical hunter. That he´s also a nice guy and has a beautiful wife doesn´t hurt either.

I hunted with "Gomez" on my first tuskless hunt 5 years ago. On that hunt we had several encounters with elephants in the jess that I thought were too close for comfort and unecessary. After 3 more elephant hunts with other PHs, I realize that because of Dereks vast experience with elephants (several years with parks and several thousand elephant killed) he can read elephants behavior patterns better then most other PHs. As I have come to better understand elephants, what seemed dangerous to me at the time now doesn't seem like we took unecessry risks at all on that first hunt.

I hunted at Humani in 2000 and was introduced to a gentleman in his thirties. If my memory is correct I believe he was introduced as William Finaughty.

Am I correct and if so is this the aforementioned great grandson?

I would venture that the William I know was/is the grandson ...Having said that, I wouldn't bet a farthing if I even knew what one looked like .. Smiler

Another vote for Brent Hein-Zimbabwe. Don't know how this fits in as my professional hunter on my safari in South Africa was also the owner of the company. Anyway, Charles Price was outstanding in both roles.

Personally I would NOT hunt with Phil Lozano (Tanzania). Phil has an ad on the home page of Carmelo's website, and posts there. IMO it shows extremely poor judgment for Phil to voluntarily associate himself with the slanders and falsehoods that Carmelo posts on his website. (It also may show marketing desparation.) The last thing I want is a PH who lacks judgment.

Dan -- Phil Lozano is a good friend and not a desperate man by any stretch. He put that ad on worldwankers when he started his forum, not really knowing of carmcarm's reputation. You will also notice that he does not participate in any of the mud-slinging that goes on over there. He shouldn't be guilty by association IMHO.

Whitworth,

Phil is well aware of the slander the Carmelo posts there, but he keeps his ad there and pops in for a post once in a while. And people will judge a man by who he associates with.

Also, at Phil's forum he had the infamous wynnwood/cats there as moderator for quite a while after wynnwood/cats was caught posting someone else's bowhunting photos and claiming them to be his own.

When I asked Phil about these two things, he denied having an ad at Carmelo's website (although it is there for all to see) and he denied that Wynnwood/cats had been a moderator at the Phil website. I do not understand why he would make inaccurate statements about such things.

When I see red flags, I just walk away, whether it is a business or personal transaction. In this instance there are way too many red flags for me.

Phil may be a great guy - I don't know. But the red flags are likely to keep me from finding out.

Best regards,

Dan

Dan,

I am the site administrator at Phil's site, and wynwood is not a moderator there, nor was he ever to the best of my knowledge (keep in mind that I am still working on my first coffee this morning!). Advertisement is one area where there more of it you have, the better the returns -- again IMHO.

I do not wish to get into a tussle here, but I don't think that Phil should be judged by an ad on carmcarm's web site. Of course, you are certainly entitled to your opinion and I can respect that.

Sincerely and unceremoniously,

Marko

whitworth,

Wynnwood certainly was a moderator, and as soon as he became one I sent a message to Peg asking that my account on Phil's website be deleted and I explained the reason why. It was astounding to me that Phil would select a fraud as a moderator on his site. And Wynwood remained a moderator for some time, even after my complaint a a later compliaint from at least one other participant on that forum.

Phil certainly can and should be judged by his advertisement on Carmelo's website. It tells us several things. First, it tells me that Phil is not bothered in the least with the sick and slanderous things that Carmelo posts and that and that Phil is willing to lend support to those slanders. Phil's association with Carmelo is of course completely voluntary. Second, it tells me that Phil is desparate to get his name out if he is willing to use Carmelo's sick site as one of his advertising venues. And third it tells me either that Phil either has very poor judgement or is completely clueless. Of course this is all good information because it helps me (and many others) cross Phil off the list of PHs we would consider hunting with.

Finally, the fact that Phil made 2 materially inaccurate statements to me about this matter really says it all. I only hunt with people who I can trust.

You may know a different Phil than this, but each person has many sides.

He is a former Nature Conservancy Officer who has a 7000 acre farm he owns. He hunts on adjoining land, and organizes trips to Tanzania & Zimbabwe for what you want to hunt.

He is an experienced leopard hunter, and has several on/near/traversing his farm. We saw plenty of sign in September when I was there.

Highlight of my ten days- 55 inch kudu and white rhino dart (he has 3 on the property).

Hard working, knowledable and very dedicated. Good staff, comfortable accomodations.

He does not have a website, but will be at Reno SCI and some other shows.

His email is johanpietersesafaris@tiscali.co.za

He is a lot of fun to hunt with.

I have hunted with a number of good PH's over the years, but my all-time favorite is Tokkie van der Merwe, who owns Three Ways Safaris in Zimbabwe. I can't imagine a nicer person to share a campfire with, and on top of that we have taken some very nice animals together.

He may not be a "big name" PH, but I would not hesitate to trust him with my best interests, or my life, and I have done both on numerous occasions.

I personally have only hunted with 7 primary PH's. The guys that stand out in my mind are Arthur Taylor in Zambia who no longer hunts to my knowledge. He was the Dom Deluise of African hunting. Aside from being a comedian and jokester he was a driven cat man. Robbie Martin in Zim had some major problems but knew his hunting extremely well. Garry Kelly in RSA is my all time favorite. The guy worked his ass off for us and maintained a positive attitude for the full month we were with him and all through the 3400 miles we put on his Toyota while traveling all over RSA and Botswana. We had fun every day with Garry. He gets my top rating.

I agree with Northway as well. I hunted with Brian as my PH when I hunted with Boet Nel. Boet (pronounced boot) is a very funny guy and has a clean, nice camp. He is a practical joker - hunt with him and miss a shot, (not me mind you) and you will find out what's in store for you. Brian is a hard working, quiet PH and has a great tracker (his Jack Russell mini-me).

Rodon "Rodie" Tourle gets my vote!
Fanatastic work ethic! That Dog can hunt!

He did my hunt with HHK as a favor to the Wayne Edwards family.
He was responsible for my success bagging that huge leopard and big buff!

Info from his website below:

Hunt Zimbabwe in 2006

Rodon Tourle, owner and operator of Dumela Safaris, began his hunting career at the age of 17.

With thirteen years of experience, Rodon is one of the youngest Professional Hunters to obtain

a full Hunting Licence (No Restrictions) for all the BIG FIVE. Having hunted over 120 buffalo,

20 elephant, and numerous lion and leopard, and attaining the position of Operations Manager

for two major safari companies, Rodon possesses experience much beyond his years. With his

unique blend of youthful energy and the wisdom of his experience, Rodon's dynamic personality

ensures the client will have a memorable hunting experience.

As Operations Manager, Rodon was afforded the opportunity to gain an in-depth knowledge

of the rules and regulations pertaining to the hunting industry, and the logistics and pricing

structure of the safari business. He is also familiar with most of the hunting concessions throughout

Zimbabwe and what they have to offer. With this in mind, Rodon has developed his concept of

big-game hunting for the future: rather than being restricted to one or two hunting concessions,

Rodon has negotiated with various outfitters to have most of Zimbabwe at his disposal. This affords

the client the best opportunity at the species he wishes to hunt while offering choices, with the client

making the ultimate decisions based on price, trophy quality, availability of other species, terrain,

location, camp facilities and other activities for non-hunting companions.

As a life-long resident of Zimbabwe, Rodon has countless contacts throughout the hunting

community and a deep understanding of the ever-changing conditions of southeastern Africa.
