If you are leaving a firearm unattended, consider the below:

What happens when some little kid walks in w/Mommy and starts going through your stuff while you are in the restroom and a finds the gun? Dare I say what bad things could happen next?

You will be held liable civil and criminal court! Can you live with that?

The crooks in your town may go to the next to commit crime, but what about the ones passing through from the other town!

I would/have never left a firearm unattended in public!

That being said, I'd never carry in a bag anyhow. I had an old battle axe of a deputy sheriff tell a class of us new boots, and this was directed to the females in the class as fanny packs etc had yet to be, to always carry your firearm, badge and ID on your person. If they steal your purse you can still shoot 'em and they won't find out your a cop if they get away!

You are liable if anyone happens to get their hands on your piece. I also think it's better to carry it on yourself. If you really end up needing it, it should be easier to bring into play. JMHO.

Folks,

He should not be proud of his actions-leaving a firearm unattended-no excuses.

In a way, he is encouraging crime, not endeavoring to prevent it. How does he 'splain the theft of a loaded firearm to the local boys when it does happen? Enabler that he is, I guess.

We are talking about leaving a lethal weapon UNATTENDED in a public place. I think that is a crime in most cities, no?

I think we should condemn his self-admitted irresponsible/potentially illegal actions as a group.

Best;

Condemn as a group? He stated what he did and asked for comments ("discuss"). I think you guys have made some excellent points. That should be sufficient I would think.

In most states, if someone gets his gun, and later hurts someone with it, he will most likely be prosecuted.

The only time I carry a gun "in a bag" is if I am on a trip and do not want to leave my third or fourth gun in the vehicle.

If I take it in some place it is always over my shoulder or the strap is wrapped around my leg.

If I am by myself I will carry my bag to the bathroom with me...

Leave a gun unattended in a public place, not me NEVER.

Yes, Condemn his irresponsible gun "control" actions-admitted to leaving a loaded handgun unattended (oops, the gal behind the counter had eyes on his "stuff", plus no one steals, yadad yada). His cavalier attitude marks him as a yahoo of the worst sort (he ain't ever wrong, dontcha know).

I think we should stand up and be counted whenever someone clearly indicates thier behavior is beyond the pale of reason.

I have no personal issue with him, just his ridiculous assertions and behaviors; his words are fodder for the anti's.

Comparing a trap range where everyone is known to be bringing a firearm to leaving a loaded firearm in a coffee shop is not a valid point. I am not sure what trap club you belong to but at mine when someone says "Watch my shit I am going to take a leak." the gun is not loaded.

If I go to the restroom -- which is the only place I go -- there's staff at the counter, watching the entire "floor."

And they are all vetted non-felons/nonprohibited persons-we know this how????

Small children are under control . . . No one is "unsupervised," because there's plenty of things for small children to break. Besides a lot of steaming hot coffee, and soups out on tables.

Small children by defintion are not "under control" at "all times", unless they are sedated. You are too trusting and naieve.

I'd never leave and go for a walk . . . But the stuff would be fine if I did. I don't think there's ever been more than 6 people in the place at once . . . and staff is larger than that. (They roast coffee in the back.)

No "kid" is going to get into my bag. Trust me on this one.

Okay. I trust you-to be a danger to others given the fact that you LEAVE A LOADED FIREARM UNATTENED IN A PUBLIC PLACE. It is the kids and other unauthorized persons I worry/care about.

(Same as at the trap club, where we leave shotguns sitting in racks on the porch of the clubhouse, along with ammo. And yeah, there are small children there too.)

I am active in several disiplines-not one range/event allows weapons to be unattended behind the ready line, and none tolerate the idea or practice of leaving unattended any weapon loaded unless ready to shoot and under the control of the firer, we practice safety, always!

Small town, no strangers, and no "loose children."

Ridiculous. I suggest you discuss your practice with the local PD Chief. I am sure he'll agree with your practices, as there are no strangers, criminals, "loose" kids etc in YOUR special "Walnut Grove" world

Time you step up and recognize you are WRONG about this point and correct your illogical and illegal behavior before someone does get hurt by your (criminal) negligence.

AR community; when are we going to make it a point to defend the basic rules of firearm safety and impress on 0X0 that he is wrong minded and his behavior as admitted is unacceptable? His comparison to "range ops" is irrelevant and sophomoric.

Regards;

Just happened to a female cop. She let her badge and ID in a purse on the passenger seat when locked in traffic jams.
The window glass was broken and the purse disappeared. That is the latest trend here, beware when driving from Charles de Gaulle airport to Paris using the nothern highway (A1)

Fortunately, she did not have her handgun at that moment.
