The police in Canberra must really be wankers!

CANBERRA (Reuters) - An Australian movie fan on his way to pose for a Star Wars 30th anniversary photo shoot was arrested by police after his replica laser pistol was mistaken for a more earthly machine gun, media reported on Friday.

The 32-year-old man, dressed in black and carrying a backpack with a replica laser blaster poking out the side, alarmed diners at a food court in central Melbourne.

"It was a replica gun. We weren't sure what we were dealing with," Senior-Constable Daniel Sage told the Herald Sun newspaper. Photographs showed a gun closely resembling the weapon carried by Star Wars rogue Han Solo in the cinema classic.

The man had been on his way to pose for a community newspaper ahead of the 30th Star Wars movie anniversary when he was surrounded by armed police, forced to the ground and handcuffed.

Police said despite being a harmless replica and a close match to a weapon from a galaxy far, far away, the man would be charged with possessing an unregistered firearm.

Yeah you can thank our media for all the beat up hype on firearms, with accidents or crime with a firearm it's spread over newspapers and tv for days with disregard for the facts, getting the general public offside, someone gets stabbed and it barely makes the news. Our PM Howard the Coward started the ball rolling years ago with all his bullshit, he listens to the fanatic anti's rather than sensible law abiding licenced firearm owners. who knows where we are going to end up.....

Yes you need to be licenced for a replica rifle/pistol in all states (collectors lic.), there's some screw ball women's organisation here in Vic. which is pushing for a total ban on toy firearms, they are getting air time every week on the talk back shows, more and more are calling in agreeing with them, all goes back the the media beat-ups....

Some of the toughest war vets on earth came out of Aussie country. I'm speechless that any of the crapola ever got a foothold. I guess the next time Japan decides to shoot craps for world dominance they will take down under without a shot. Come on guys, get yourselves united and stand against this boloney. What happened to the chaps that bit open beer cans and smashed the empties on their forehead? I know your scattered out over a vast country, but someone must have a plan. Hope you can reverse this BS. Keep us posted....it gives we Americans something to stew over. LDK

L.David, mate the problem we have here is it's that bloody easy to pack ya gear up and go shooting/hunting any time of the year be it deer, pigs, fox, goats, buff or what ever, that shooters in general don't give a rat's arse about what's happening to them, the aussie saying "she be right" ain't going to work in the near future, we are going to be in for a real shock, most of the shooting clubs/associations have there heads in a hole mate, it's like at the range when I'm sighting in and have a chat to fellow shooters about what's happening, they couldn't give a shit cos it don't affect them cos they hunt/shoot when they like, but when Mr Johnny jack boot Howard comes down on law abiding shooters they will be the first to scream unfare, mate I don't know the answer..

It's a shame Australian firearm supporters just got ignored by the government and got walked all over back in 96. Then again with the handguns not long ago. Now the government can keep banning stuff now as we've already shown them that we just let it happen. I wish we could abolish the stupid bans and restrictions they put on us but no one has stood forward with a solution. The SSAA are totally useless.

+1.

Except that the answer is to educate every single firearms owner in OZ as to whats going on.
I just heard from friends at the SHOT show. The WISH (women in shooting and hunting) stand had a petition to ask the Gov't to review some of the more draconian laws, with a veiw to scrapping them as they serve no purpose, and cost millions to regulate.

Out of the total numbers that attended the SHOT show, only 890 people could be bothered to sign a bit of paper in an effort to preserve their sport.
Well, Fuck'em. If they can't be bothered, they deserve to lose everything! And they will, unless through the efforts of better people than themselves.

Of course, most people also remember that the largest shooters group in OZ, in 1996, could bend over and grab their ankles fast enough, just to try and please Little Johnny.
Appeasement, does not work. Never has, never will.

Cheers, Dave.

They couldn't grab their ankles fast enough, could they? Total sellouts.

Sounds fitting.

The plot line behind "Star Wars" is about the fight against evil oppressive dictatorial government, so this happening in Canberra over a plastic toy "replica" space gun sounds fitting.

OK, is it just me, or do those weapons the storm troopers in the Starwars movies carry, bear an uncanny resemblance to a Sterling SMG, with the stock folded? Big Grin

But of course, you can find one here: http://www.ketzer.com/prop_replica/resin_e11_blaster.html

and Han Solo's pistol is designed from a Mauser 9 mm pistol: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Star-Wars-Han-Solo-Blaster/dp/B000GPWSHW
