Very nice mate, I hope she developes into a good dog for you. Keep us in touch with her training. I'd like to know how it goes. ------------------------------ A mate of mine has just told me he's shagging his girlfriend and her twin. I said "How can you tell them apart?" He said "Her brother's got a moustache!"

When she starts tearing up the back yard, you'll think you did get a chain saw ------------------------------ A mate of mine has just told me he's shagging his girlfriend and her twin. I said "How can you tell them apart?" He said "Her brother's got a moustache!"

That's a nice dog, if she hunts as well as she looks you should be getting a few shortly. Good Luck to both of you.

Posted this on another site as well, however I though I would let you know about Lucy's progress. After the terrible Victorian bush fires, I needed to find a new location to hunt Sambar, as all my favourite spots went up in smoke. At the same time I am trying to teach my German Wire Haired Pointer to Point Sambar, she is only 8 months old, however I want to show her as many Sambar as possible before winter. After deciding on a new place to go, we walked into a head of a gully that "screamed" DEER! There were droppings and prints everywhere, and after walking "Lucy" in on a lead, she was trying to drag me in a particular direction. Normally she is pretty obedient, yet she was determined to head up hill, so I decided to let her off the lead and see what happenens. After running around like a headless chook for a minute or two, she headed up the gully about 60-70 meters away and then locked on point. All of a sudden a sambar without antlers stood up 5 meters in front of Lucy. There was a bit of a standoff, as the deer held its ground with is mane flaired out. This gave me time to work the bolt on my rifle and place the crosshairs on its shoulder. At the shot the deer took off down hill with Lucy hot on its heels. The Dogwood scub was quite thick and a second shot was out of the question. I ran in the general direction only to find 60 meters further on, Lucy pulling on the back leg of the now dead deer. As it turned out it was a yearling stag, so after a few photos and heaps of praise for Lucy, I then decided to gut the young stag and carry it out whole. What a job that was!! An hour and a half of steady walking ,carrying/draging the deer, we reached a track that I was able to get the 4WD down to. Needless to say I am wrapped in my dogs first up performance. I just got back home and could not wait to share the news!! Cheers, Tony.

Great looking pup! Great looking rifle! And I see a great looking relationship beginning with your new friend! I was wondering why the choice of a pointing dog for your type of hunting as opposed to a type of hound style dog. In the states the German wire pointer is used mainly as a bird dog and I know most bird hunters don't like to see their bird dogs running with their nose to the ground. Please don't take this wrong but some would think this is a trait not wanted in that bread of dog. I could be way off base here. Please educated me. Condrats on your new friend! The only easy day is yesterday!

The only hound types allowable in the Victorian bush these days are pure bred beagles or blood hounds, otherwise it must be a pure bred pointer or setter of a breed recognised by the govt.God forbid you take your stock dog or family mutt for a walk in designated deer habitats,(about a third of the state)you are breaking the law and can be charged

Between the gun laws and the dog laws sounds like you Aussies need to have a "Tea Party" of your own. DOUBLE RIFLE SHOOTERS SOCIETY

There is a seperate list of dogs permitted as 'companion dogs'. I suggest you check it out. I think you will find GWPs are on it. Companion dogs are premitted everywhere hounds are, but must be kept under control at all times. You are not permitted to use them in the same fashion as hounds, but you are allowed to use them to track wounded deer. As for the family mutt, they are not allowed in most deer habitat anyway. Remember all those nasty "No Dogs" signs? At least this way, you get to take your dog with you. Cheers, Dave. Aut Inveniam Viam aut Faciam.

Great looking dog. Mine (GWP), Olly, is now 5 months old, so far more interested in eating animals than finding them, but now out hunting on a daily basis, occassionally showing promise. I chose a female as they are supposed to have better hunting instincts??? Great temprament, but eats like a horse. A lot of fun, loves water and doesn't mind the cold. ...."At some point in every man's life he should own a Sako rifle and a John Deere tractor....it just doesn't get any better...."

Two nice puppies, thanks for the photographs. Trackers, When I was a youg'n many days were spent fox huntinging in North Wales, where there was a local saying which translates to, "A dog hunts for himself, a bitch will hunt for you". I think there may be something in that old saying.
