Hi Guys,

I was doing some web surfing and came across a article about moose introduced to Fjordland in NZ in 1910....the article went on to say that the last one was thought to have been shot in the 1950's,however there was some evidence found in 2005 that they still may be present (a shed antler and hair samples were found).
I could find no more about it,so do any of you know,or have a opinion,was it a elaborate hoax or are there still a small pocket of moose out there.

After being in Moose country in Canada i don't think there are any Moose left in New Zealand

I hope i'm wrong.

I havent been to fiordland , but I do beleive that a very small population of moose still survive there. The area has to be the least accessable, least hospitable bit of New Zealand you could imagine.

If DNA testing on the hair samples from the area confirm moose then how can you say there are none ? Another of those intriguing situations which NZ is known for - more than one bird species has been deemed extinct and then shown up fifty years later so anything is possible.
