Well, let's see. I could be current with Sears for a month. Or I have a couple of grand sons that I'm sure could use 10k each in their college fund. Sadly perhaps, my house is paid for, my truck is paid for, I have more guns than I really have any use for and more other toys than I need. You could say I'm a satisfied man. That still doesn't mean I'm gonna run out and spend 10k on a passing fetish. I'm sure you're familar with the "real cost" principle.
I have nothing against tats per se, but I hope these folks that get the sleeves and tats on their faces and such are living on their Daddy's dime or that they like working at the car wash 'cause that's where they're gonna be.

I have a tattoo, and after having it for 40 years that's pretty much how I assess it.

And in the situation where all one has to steer their judgement of those with whom they are dealing is their apearance, that is the impression one gets from a person who goes overboard with any feature, whether Ubangi lip-enlargement, Mohawk haircuts, or yes, tattooing.

The problem with any sort of voluntary extreme appearance is that it dominates the social situations and prevents the normal learning of a person's other qualities, good or bad. So most people avoid having to solve the puzzle of who the excessively adorned really are. They just write them off and avoid them where possible.

What is too much is very similar to the useful definition of alcholism. That diagnosis isn't determined by how much one drinks, or when, but by whether it causes one problems in either his work or personal life.

Just but puts it in the box for me.

People make judgement calls in about the first 30 secs. I'm an employer.I've always found this trend for full coverage rather unsavoury. Makes the individual look dirty IMO My choice is not to hire. I've never seen anything on anyone that made me say wow I really have to get one of those.

As for punching holes in your anatomy and plugging them with metal, plastic or bone. Attractive...?? Nah! Tribal..?? Only tribe that does that is the Dumb Mother F*****s tribe. Get a life!

It's interesting to see how poorly the pro-tattoo crowd is trying to apply "PC" here.

The United States has come to a point where proponents of aberrant behavior need to be accepted. You do something outside the societal norms, then you attempt to force others who do not to not only accept you; but tell you how cool you are. Instead, you get a general "that's really dumb..." response and it makes you crabby.

Prime Example: ted's last post about his alleged ability to judge people's character by their responses. In ted's world people think tattoos are cool, and the artwork should be admired.

It appears that world is NOT populated by upper middle class and above. Madonna was about the biggest slut in the world during her heyday. Now that she has money, she's more conservative than Rush Limbaugh.

You will note however, during the days when she did not cover up much, she never displayed any tattoos. To the best of my knowledge, nobody really important in the country has visible tattoos or multiple piercings that show.

It's a permanent disfigurement of your skin. No matter what you say, that's what it is, that's what it always has been, and that's what it is always going to be.

You want acceptance and admiration, invent a cure for cancer. You want to be a billionaire, figure out a way to remove tattoos without scarring the area.

On all points +1

I have always viewed those that have indulged their right to full/visible tattoo coverage and piercings along similar lines as those who subject themselves to self harm. Neither behaviour is attractive be it in regards to character or physical appearance.

It sure raises more questions than it answers. AFAIC

As for Madonna being a slut.... Sex sells. Be it records, video's concert tickets. She has always been one of the most commercially aware women in the business. If that meant squeezing her boobs into a pair of over sized cones and flashing her muff, whilst publicly banging one of her latino dancers. So be it. Its only business as far as she is concerned. If you don't have a great voice and without the slap on you look a bit like a horse, you have to use what ever else you have to sell the product.

Rich - As you know, sometimes you and I hold 180-degree opposite views. But on this one I 100% agree with you. It is one of the major problems our society has right now in my view. Not that we're are too controlling, but that we accept being expected to reward lousy judgement by the behaviorally immature.

I think your post deserves tu2 tu2 tu2 tu2 tu2

Tattoos don't hurt anyone. Except maybe the one getting it. Judge people on actions and behaviors that negatively affect others, if you must judge. Alcoholism, drug use, thievery, malicious lies, and abuse are things to stand against, as they hurt innocents. Tattoos are not bad. Eye sores, maybe. I've seen plenty that I think are. But, my grandfathers had visible tattoos on their arms. My dad has a tattoo on his back. And they were (and my dad still is) the most hard working and honorable of all men. My cousin has many tattoos and he has served three tours in Iraq and a tour in Afghanistan. He is a role model. Talking bad about people who have something as harmless as a tattoo might make you feel good about yourself, but it doesn't make you a good person.

Here are some Random Items.

Many years ago on the Dept I worked on there was a guy that had tatoos on his arms.

He was a Veteran, and he was a Traffic Officer Downtown. Some of the "Proper Ladies" complained about his tatoos and he was ordered to wear long sleeved shirts 100% of the time for several years...

Here is another Random thought.

The perception of Tatoos seems to be, that IF a person has tatoos, they are more likely to be a Lawbreaker/Drug user, and Generally Anti social/Anti Society.

Just today a guy behind me in the check out line in WalMart had a teardrop Tatoo just under his right eye.

I thought to myself, I bet he is a Model Citizen...

Also today, I went to the local ATV store to get a couple of light bulbs. The two Dudes in the store were tatooed UP...

The one I delt with was friendly, but they had difficulty finding the box the light bulbs were in. While I waited for them to sort things out, and find the light bulbs... they took several phone calls from customers having work done on their ATV's...

I really wanted to tell them, either, Hey Dudes, Lay off the Meth, durring business hours, or Take a Little More, and SPEED UP, so you can work Faster, Sharper...

I have always avoided dating women with tats. Just don't care for them on any lady that I would date. Does that mean that I automatically assume someone with tats isn't a good person? No,it doesn't but it does take more convincing that they are.

most police agencies have a rule that an exposed tattoo cannot cover more than a certain perentage of the part exposed; lower arm etc., or be offense in nature, If it exceeds that then they must cover up, usually with a long sleeve shirt.
The point I was trying to make is that yes I have tattoos and lots of them, but I have chosen to place them to where they are only seen if I want them to be.
Tattoos do not make the person; no more than color of skin makes a person good or bad or somewhere in between.

Like I said above....I can learn more from a person by reading and listening to what they have to say....Or how they say it.....

Rather the type of clothing they have on his/her back car or truck they drive house they live in or ink/or none in their skin

Yes there is excess but I am no less or more a good or bad person because I have a tattoo

I have hunted with many from this forum....shared food and a home with the same. I doubt for a moment they thought less of me for my ink.

There are a few exceptions to every rule. You may well be one of those few. Unfortunately the rules/views are based upon the majority rather than the exceptions.

I started my tattoo at the age of 38, but it took a year and a half to complete so I was 39 before it was finished. I only worked on it about 4 or 5 hours a month. I don't have a PhD. But, I am working on my Master's. It's a little slow going because I work so many hours. Who knows, maybe after my Master's I'll start on my PhD next. Cool

I've been told "you'll appreciate it when you get older" many times. The trouble is I'm getting older with each year that passes and I still don't appreciate those things that I was told I would.

I still prefer good beer to $50 a bottle french wine, I still prefer Porche 911's to luxury limos and I still prefer looking at young, clean untattooed "sporting" women to women pushing 60.

The greying hair I can live with, and I still have all of my own teeth. The knees ain't quite what they use to be. But the heart is still pumping and the body is still willing. old
