the picture of the round and bullets kinda give some scale to these .550" x 1.370" x 615gr (tolerance on fifty in my possession is 615.2-615.3 he's got the tolerance down pretty low) solids.

The round is a 45LC 1.572" then a Swift 400gr 416 bullet 1.394", a Woodleigh 600gr 505 solid 1.261", the 558gr 505 Macifej solid 1.470" and the new king; 615 grains of .550" solid 1.370". It will likely be loaded around 2300-2350fps, but JeffeOsso's QL calculations say about 2550fps. I will skip the sand bags this time; wet newspaper having been pointed out to me as a better mousetrap.

The rest of the photos are of my YTD work in the gunsmith's shop. I have learned how to make barrel band front sights and barrel band sling swivels from round stock.
FYI, it is easier than it reads. Buy some 1.5" round stock, Metal Supermarket in Boise had a 36" stub of steel laying around. Part a piece 3 1/4" long and center it in the 4-jaw chuck. Check for runout. Take the barrel diameter (for both) at the point where the band goes; then lower one jaw and tighten the opposite one until the piece is sitting with half the barrel diameter + 1/8" from the bottom edge. Check for runout again, the start the lathe and cut a hold about .005" under barrel diameter. This is soooo cool to do the first time, watching the round stock whirl around off center to the cutter as it cuts the hole out for the barrel. Take the piece out and go to the mill. Draw some lines and start milling. The sling swivel took about two hours, the barrel band ramp front about an hour more. Fifteen minutes with a file and a little buffing, and there's about $200 and waiting on delivery I missed out on. Dang, I can see why so many guys here get a lathe and drill press and maybe a mill. Boomstick will be along in a minute to post the pictures for me.

Enjoy,

Rich

It's more than a look Neal. I was impressed with how porky the short 550 is at that weight. That's a serious amount of metal to be launching at 2500 FPS from a 10 or 11 lb rifle.

Jeffe,

silk purse out of a what...?

Seriously, this is ALL JeffeOsso's fault. Bauska's employee Steve gave me "next week, I promise..." for six months, then Les went into the nursing home and the business shut down. I am hanging in the breeze, and the Long, Tall, Texan bails me out. He has TWO!! 550 barrels, and sells me one for what he paid for it.

It is sad, but the 577BME is going to be even nicer than the 550 Gibbs.

Getting good packaging there Mac.
And to think it all started with the Unholy Trinity of Experimental .395 bullets.
Here is another example of the excellent packaging, the .395 S&H Ripper on the way. How would these be on coyote pelts?

Actually the semi-borerider Harlow band structure on these bullets is an old cast bullet trick. I have learned this in my studies of cast bullets.

I will be casting my own 400 to 410-grain .395-caliber LFN gas-checked bullets from an LBT mould.

Maybe someday I will develop serum lead levels sufficient to deaden the last vestiges of recoil sensitivity, and solder my retinas in place, to prepare me for the .666 Teufel. Wink

Rich,
Heat treated wheel weights? Can BHN approach 30 that way, or would it be closer to 21?

Lyman #2 Alloy, as made from wheel weights (9 pounds) plus 1 pound of 50/50 (tin/lead) solder:

Does the #2 make prettier bullets, and can heat treating them the same as WW improve them, or does it just melt them? bewildered

Yes! It's entirely RIP's fault that I'm in the bullet hobby/business. If it wasn't for his desperation for .395" zingers, I would be sitting by the pool right now sipping a Mai Tai. But Nooooooooo!!! I am now a slave to AutoCad!!

Hydraulic damper?

RIP,
WW with a dab of arsenic can be heat treated to about 34-36. But, the nefarious B-U-T; they will soften gradually over a 30 day period to close to original. It's one reason why top competitors in cast bullet competition usually cast about ten days before a big match. They will also size, but not lube the bullets before heat treating. Doing it afterward would anneal the driving bands in the sizer die. Cast, size, heat treat, and then run thru a sizer die that has carefully been honed out about .0005" over size diameter a day or two before the match.

About the triple-six recoil reducer, I went to the bone yard this afternoon, and picked up a shock off a wrecked Yugo. Should be just about perfect as is.

ISS-

Tell us more about your Rem. Mod. 30 action. As you said above, it is wearing a Wisner safety. Who did the boat release if you don't mind me asking?

I have a real soft spot in my heart for Enfields and Mod. 30's.

P.S. Who did your bolt handle modification and what/whose bolt handle did you use?

Thanks in advance.

Rich,
Thanks. I reckon I will just use #2 alloy made from WW and solder. That will cast prettier, a little bigger and a few grains lighter than WW, size to .396 and see if they work at 2150 fps.
Too fussy with the heat treating for 30-day hard-on and subsequent softening.

Mac,
I have a bucket of used WW, and a box of brand new 10-ouncers from an automotive supply place locally, that must have had a 30-year-old price on them: cheap.

How much would the DHL charges be for a 5-gallon bucket of used WW? Big Grin

Mark,

The Model 30/30S/34/35 were Remington's attempt to make a hunting rifle out of the P14/17.

1. Jim Wisner made the bolt handle, the bottom metal, and the three-position safety. Like many of the craftsmen here on AR his work is flawless.

2. My gunsmith in Boise, Idaho, made the bolt release, milled off the area where the old safety was, and milled the bolt to Jim's specifications, then installed it and the rest of the "goodies". He and I made the front barrel band sight, starting with a 4" long 1.25x3" bar stock. They are actually easier to make than I thought. We also made the barrel band sling swivel, it was harder to do than the front sight. You have to offset a piece of 1.5" round stock and cut the hole off-center so it can be machined down to round and leave the area for the sling swivel to attach...then it's hand file time.

Andre'

I have searched high and low for similar boxes or any boxes which will fit .505 & .510 bullets snugly. There isn't anything out there that isn't really tall necessitating some padding on top of the meplats to keep things in order. If I come up with something I'll let you know.

Regards,

Macifej

(PS - where in Denmark are you located? - I may be making a trip into your area in the fall.)
